This is the same text I've seen for every recent govt firing. It feels like the fact that these supposedly "for-cause" terminations were demonstrably copied and pasted should be useful evidence to show "for cause" was, in fact, a lie. (in addition to the obvious, viz. performance review records)

Love these guys. Here’s a large Brissus(?) from Hawaiʻi that probably fell prey to a helmet shell.

My university has been sending around emails about various “AI training modules”. I wonder if they’ve done something similar.

I appreciate that.

HAH HAHAHA HAHAHAHAHA AAAHHHGGGHH. Sorry, I thought you implied the existence of a world in which academic institutions cared about and supported graduate students and postdocs…

Yeah but that one was just good old fashioned human incompetence (on so many levels, including our governor apparently forgetting his twitter password)

Oh man, if you liked this you are in for a treat! The British ambient group Zoviet France have been quietly releasing weekly "59 minute continuous mix(es) of some of the best...zero BPM, hypnatropic and maximinimalist recordings that have grabbed their attention" SINCE 2012. There are 652 EPISODES!

I mostly use duckduckgo, but I also use a browser extension that adds '&udm=14' to the end of the google url, which disables a lot of their extra bullshit (just look for udm=14 among the addons to whichever browser you use)/

You voted to ban healthcare for trans kids.

This looks amazing. Every time SICB happens and I see people posting about it I deeply regret not having been to SICB.

Yes! This is why (even though I recognize it's probably a valuable skill to be brief and pithy) I hate doing 5-minute talks and when given the opportunity I'll always choose the full-length ones.

Did you read or like the book(s) this is based on? Do you like the series because it’s a good adaptation or does it stand on its own? (I *hated* the book so I’m trying to gauge if the show is worth a try)

In response to the barnacles themselves proliferating like crazy.

I was going to ask exactly this. I’ve seen Onchidoris absolutely COVERING the reef at Point Lobos in Carmel.

If something can't support paying a living wage to those delivering it, then either we shouldn't have it or—if it is good for society despite not generating money—it should be nationalized and subsidized so that it provides its benefits while allowing those delivering it to make a living wage.

I’m not a big fan of naming species after people but if anyone deserved it, it was probably Jack Randall. Somewhere there’s a curve of species described over time and you can clearly see the uptick when Jack came on the scene.

This is great but it’s also ironic/disappointing that they cite plagiarism cases yet also use GenAI for their own article. (examples are just the super obvious tells)

This is also really fun to do with styrofoam mannequin heads! I had a few I made when I was a tech on the Nathaniel B. Palmer in the early 2000's, but they were lost in various moves over the years. I really miss them.

As someone with a PhD in marine biology, I can confirm.

They fly these at the marine corps base near my work and they just hover in the dark with a spotlight like those death machines from Terminator 2 and I hate them (and they crash ALL THE TIME).

Your *institution* probably doesn’t understand how money works at your institution! In my experience (across multiple universities), whatever it is you need to do with money, it is The First Time Anyone Has Ever Had To Do This Before. It’s infuriating!

A cool thing I discovered about bubble snails several years ago is that some species’ shells fluoresce under UV! (shown is Bulla vernicosa from Hawaiʻi. this photo is not very good but it makes the point)

Yeah, there's a Mediterranean species too!
comment in response to post
I know this is off-theme but could that be a monk seal off the stern of the boat? It is listed as a "Mediterranean galley" in the description but it also says it's in the Euphrates so maybe not.

Truth! It could have been so good, but it's just not. Did actual humans write this? It feels so stilted and exposition-laden.
