literal hype train

We quietly soft launched our merch store last night. By the end of the week we'll have each piece of art that has run with our articles available as posters, but right now we have a full selection of Flytrap logo wear and Fuck the Algorithm merch!

I'm not usually a big merch girlie, but @theflytrapmedia.com crew has me locked in.

ask, receive, etc theflytrapmedia-shop.fourthwall.com/products/tra...

it's true

How does fascism become a mere memory so it never happens again? With a lot of work and persistence. Our co-founder @nicolefroio.bsky.social wrote about Oscar-winning "I'm Still Here" and the memory work behind the picture.

Killer read from my comrade @nicolefroio.bsky.social on I'm Still Here and the fight to preserve the history, and legacy, of Brazil's dictatorship.

Exciting developments from our podcast partner! Reminder that Cancel Me, Daddy splits profits with The Flytrap! (Also stay tuned for a new version of The Flytrap merch shop, which is currently under development)

I just realized that the next piece I’m working on for @theflytrapmedia.com is also about media I consume in bed in direct defiance of my doctor, coming dangerously close to just having an ‘s.e. After Dark’ standing column.

This is a good read and mentioned two of my faves — Revolutionary Girl Utena and Steven Universe

I am extremely pro-paywall for all the reasons @theflytrapmedia.com founders have said. I also get that some stories shouldn’t be paywalled and know that we can trust journalists to make that call. But I want more journalists to get comfortable with paywalls because they work for small publishers

I want to reiterate that @theflytrapmedia.com costs less per month than a cup of basic-ass drip coffee. And the money goes to the folks running it & writing for it. If you imagine just buying a cup of coffee per month for one writer, it’s a fucking steal. theflytrap.beehiiv.com/upgrade

Thread 👇 Glad to subscribe to Flytrap. It's the one of the few subscriptions I pay for (because I can't afford many).

Subscribe to @theflytrapmedia.com! They pay their writers well and they write cool shit! And they have a monthly subscription now if you don't want to commit. (OR, you could be like me and accidentally subscribe twice because you forgot that you'd already subscribed but never configured your login?)

if anyone is complaining about paying the 1) talented 2) experienced 3) compassionate 4)learned 5)skilled 6)kindhearted journalists of @theflytrapmedia.com for their EXTREMELY VALUABLE AND TIMELY insights right now, hush the fuck up, you are just mad that feminists are asking to be paid for labor.

please respond to @nicolefroio.bsky.social's source request for more amazing and interesting writing 🥹

Do (presumed cishet) male oriented indie outlets and men's individual newsletters get as much pushback over paywalls as feminist, queer, and woman-centered outlets and newsletters? We at The Flytrap have our doubts, and we would love to know if there's any data on this. Help us find out?

For those who like seeing me in the wild I'll be repping @theflytrapmedia.com at the @spj-norcal.bsky.social conference on May 3!

"There’s a reason marriage evangelicals are in such a dither: they see marriage as a means of social control..." Great stuff from @andreagrimes.com in @theflytrapmedia.com today: theflytrap.beehiiv.com/p/marriage-i...

and here's @katelynburns.com expanding on last week's essay on why trans people are into urban planning.

As a journalist’s kid who has watched the industry absolutely change over my entire lifetime- paying for journalism is so important! If you want the good work to continue these folks need to eat!

The difference in conversations I have between my guy friends and my girl friends about dating are comedic, in a depressing way. Guys all bummed because their lives are shittier without a girlfriend, girls all bummed because their lives are shittier when they try to date.

Fellow gender studies folks and media studies folks: weigh in!

i have also wondered this! i get minimal, but non-zero pushback for running a paywall on fingers (not really a gendered publication, it's about booze lol, but i'm a cishet male, and my personality is fairly present in the writing.) curious to hear other publishers weigh in 👇

Scholar friends and colleagues, do you know of anyone in women's and gender studies (or an adjacent field) who might be working on this or something related?

An eternal friendly reminder 😈 that complaints about paywalls in my mentions are an autoblock.
