Great work Uni Canberra bringing native species back from the brink of extinction πŸ‘ As biologist EO Wilson said: "There can be no purpose more inspiring than to begin the age of restoration, reweaving the wondrous diversity of life that still surrounds us" www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

For 7 years we have been studying how rat poisons affect native wildlife. Our initial work focussed on owls, then we found it in reptiles and today we have released our world first study showing it is killing Australia’s threatened quolls and the Tasmanian Devil. theconversation.com/lethal-secon...

β€œBeyond the incorrect claim that science backs up a simple binary definition of sex, the lived experience of people clearly demonstrates that the genetic composition at conception does not define one's identity. Rather, sex and gender result from the interplay of genetics and environment.”

Trying to make use of all those hours procrasti-working on figures in ggplot2: by giving a (simple) workshop for the UWA School of Biological Sciences Postgrad Conference!

New paper from my PhD provides genomic evidence that white shark livers are on the menu for Aussie killer whales! See more here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

A great quote from a great article (which highlights what I love most about biology): "Modern breakthroughs in biology are producing a picture of life that is increasingly incompatible with authoritarian preferences for neat boxes that dictate what people are and how they should behave."

Deeply concerning, but (hopefully) an effective resource for teaching about the risks of genAI/misinfo to my first years: "...replacement of just 0.001% of training tokens with medical misinformation results in harmful models more likely to propagate medical errors." www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I am a biologist. This policy is based on disinformation and is also extremely harmful to many of our community members. Here is your biological truth: there is no single and universal set of criteria that delineates or defines "distinct" sexes. We are a beautifully variable species!

β€œThe PhD stipend is $33,511 … well below minimum wage of $47,627” β€œUniversities can raise the stipend to a maximum of $52,352, but a ACGR survey found none have done so. The highest stipend is just over $40,000 … with the average at $34,244.” #RaiseTheStipend

Super happy to share that our perspective piece on why and how genetic data should be incorporated into IUCN Red List assessments is published! This was a passion project that came out of a grad-level class taught by @jillahamilton.bsky.social πŸŒΏπŸ¦‡πŸžπŸͺΌπŸ¦§πŸŒ³πŸ§¬ link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Not the kind of story I wanted to read in bed this morning, but an important wake-up call none the less. Of 42 developments audited: - 53% ecological features were actually present - fell to 34% when street trees excluded #conservation 🌏 #urbanNature theconversation.com/property-dev...

As usual, Sasha makes compelling and well-considered arguments about balancing the harms and benefits of genomic data sharing in the face of bad faith race science

Wishing everybody a happy festive season, from one Christmas jewel (spider) to another!

Me: I'm not a mammalogist, why do I keep getting typecast as a mammal scientist? My bookshelf:

A great (and accessible!) summary of the promises and pitfalls of genetic load for #conservation management: so many unknowns and considerations for applying to direct management actions!

New #phylogeography preprint is out, just in time for the holidays! Here we explore glacial lineages, mito-nuclear discordance and local ancestry tract detection using low-coverage WGS (2X), all in Arctic Char of course! πŸŸπŸ”οΈ @jeansebmoore.bsky.social @michaelmhansen.bsky.social #PopGen

Huge congrats to all-round legend and colleague Kate Rick, for winning the @heredityjournal.bsky.social Best Student Paper for 2024! A great study on the application of #populationgenomics for the #conservation management of a threatened #marsupial!

Hanging out with my campus friends on a hot day (Endangered Carnaby's black cockatoos) #wildoz #birds 🐦

Now #ESAus2024 @lizzylowe.bsky.social unpacks the social barriers to environmental problems... Namely insecticides! - People really hate bugs. - They love to spray them. This horrifies Lizzy (and me TBH) #ESAus2024 How do we stop people spraying insecticides? It's a social problem.

Recovering from a great time at #AWMS2024 - including our post-conference field trip to Rotto yesterday. Was awesome to hear from an Indigenous elder and a local ranger about the history, #wildlife and challenges of a tourism/biodiversity hotspot.

Start of Day 2 of #AWMS2024: had a great time yesterday for the poster session sharing some of our #conservationgenetics monitoring of an urban population of quenda in collaboration with the City of Joondalup!

Come to do a PhD with me, @bfraser.bsky.social and @batconservation.bsky.social on using genomics to understand bat population declines πŸ¦‡πŸ§¬β¬‡οΈ

A permanent molecular ecology lab coordinator position in Helsinki! Come and work with a bunch of groups (including mine) working on various topics in ecology and evolution. Decided to do a stocktake of species I /currently/ have #conservation #genomics projects on, and oh boy does this feel like the manifestation of Pokemon brain-rot as a child:

Happy #LGBTQSTEMday! More than a decade (!) ago, I asked a social scientist friend to help build a study of queer identities in science careers after my literature searches came up empty β€”Β this year I helped with an evidence review that found SO MUCH on the topic, and still room for more work.

Today is the International Day of LGBTQIA+ People In STEM, and smack-bang in the middle of WA Pride Month! Several of us STEMologists at ECU have banded to share some of our perspectives on how the queer experience has shaped our academic careers. #PrideinSTEM www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F0v...

November 18 is the International Day of LGBQTIA+ People in STEM! Today more than ever we want to stress the importance of communities, building connections, and raising each other up. Let's keep leaving our mark for the betterment of us all! πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ #QueerinSTEM prideinstem.org/lgbtstemday/
