One of the most remarkable 20th C stories of the sea and long Atlantic. This little ship was involved in sinking two U-boats and also 'saw action' in the Falklands War. Read about the men and women whose lives and livelihoods are tied up with this vessel which now lies at Grytviken, South Georgia.

Today’s badge - a French wounded soldiers badge, denoting that even though the wearer was injured he was still *ahem* “good for the girls”! Only the French could have something like this…… #FWW #WW1

Britain’s Second Napoleonic Army Join me for a FREE talk @yorkstjohn.bsky.social on the East India Company Army - key to Britain’s imperial ambitions in Asia, it receives less attention than it should. Online & in person Tuesday 11th March, 18:00-19:30 www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/britains-s...

The experience of a regiment #OTD, 25 February 1916, while approaching Verdun. The men of the 156e RI had crossed the Meuse to the right bank. General Nourrisson, commander of their Division, ordered the 156e to prepare the second line of defense for 600m along the route from Bras towards Douaumont.

With the release of #Tirailleurs and the anniversary of the start of Battle of Verdun last week, it's worth remembering the RTA losses during those opening few days. The JMO of 2eRTA alone has 25 pages of casualties....1/n

I forgot to post this on Saturday - Admiral Fisher was a naval visionary who championed reforms and the Dreadnought, arguably got Britain ready for the naval war in 1914 Sometimes he spoke out of his arse… jerijerod14.substack.com/p/admiral-fi...

Today's post tells the story of the attempt to resupply von Lettow-Worbeck's command in Ost Afrika by Zeppelin in 1917. A daring and audacious flight from Bulgaria across enemy territory.... jerijerod14.substack.com/p/flying-to-...

Carte postale showing French soldiers visiting the grave of a dead comrade. In the background is the gare d’Einvaux - scene of hard fighting by 36e régiment d’infanterie coloniale on 25 Aug 1914 during the defence of la trouée de Charmes and witnessed by Henry Morel-Journel. #1GM #FWW #WW1

For Black History Month, I will post a daily primary source about a Black resident of 18th-century Massachusetts. 1. Miss Betty Cooper, who was considered male by her enslavers, but was “well known” enough that they did not publish any physical description when she self-emancipated in 1771.

Nice little charity shop find today

« Voici le plus long, par son texte, des récits de guerre en un volume. … Mais la quantité de texte et la longueur du temps raconté ne sont rien sans les qualités de sincérité et de jugement que nous trouvons chez Morel-Journel. » I read Buat’s « Journal ». This *can’t* be longer! OK. I’m going in.

⤵️ parcours-combattant14-18.fr/tresor-darch...

The Monte Cristallo d’Ampezzo group was very much an outlier during WW1. The Italians held the high ground and were attacking downhill, the terrain is very steep, and it was under snow from October to May. There was terrible winter fighting on Rauhkofel and Costa Bèla in appalling conditions.

Todays article is up and this time it’s all about the change of heart Brits had to face in #WW1 when it came to the French… After nigh on a millenium at each others’ throats, how did the Poilu look… When one art-based publication set out to try and sell Britain’s new ally to the people in 1916?
