FEDERAL RESEARCH LAB SCIENTIST IN 1965: After five years and seventy million dollars we have invented a new type of plastic that prevents communists from being able to climb ladders too fast FEDERAL RESEARCH LAB SCIENTIST IN 2025: My cure for cancer was shelved because it might benefit Hispanics

Both English and Scottish Labour are irredeemably right-wing parties now, they have nothing to offer the left or the centre and should be treated as identical to Tories. Not shadows of Tories, not Tories Lite, they just *are* more Tories now.

The only reason the GOP is ‘panicking privately’ is because their constituents are yelling publicly. Otherwise they wouldn’t care. That means our organizing, our phone calls, our rallies, and our protests are working. Don’t let up on these cowards for one second. www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

Yes. This. So very much this.

I would not be shocked if Trump started talking about reinvading Afghanistan and/or Iraq at some point.

"I get that there are people that use LLM-powered software, and I must be clear that anecdotal examples of some people using some software that they kind-of like is not evidence that generative AI is a sustainable or real industry at the trillion-dollar scale" www.wheresyoured.at/longcon/

“We’re not going anywhere. What’s more: we’re expanding.” Nearly a dozen of Minnesota’s foremost experts on gender-affirming care collaborated on this beautiful op-ed in today’s Strib. No paywall.

I feel like if Mark Cuban had more education, he'd understand why this statement is bullshit instead of just trusting AIs that he doesn't understand. Billionaires have 0 curiosity to experiment and no mindset to learn but they are absolutely convinced that they're big-brained researchers.

This helps you understand why at Bolts we created a resource called "Who Runs Our Elections," which shows you the local & state offices that are responsible for all this in each & every state: boltsmag.org/whats-on-the... It is bafflingly decentralized... but you don't have to be baffled anymore!

Attiah is spot-on. The Nazis studied & adapted Jim Crow laws: www.history.com/news/how-the... The USA did not become a full democracy until the 1960s. At our founding, only 6% of the U.S. population could vote. www.nytimes.com/2023/07/05/w... Millions of American citizens remain disenfranchised.

This is horseshit. If you fear protests will lead to martial law then you already live under martial law — and you’re the one who declared it. Plus, it *won’t* lead to a declaration of martial law and the fear misconstrues the nature of the threats we face.

It's funny / sad that this encapsulates a good deal of fascist ideology.

Doing the unthinkable: The deep cuts to the #CDC's workforce today are expected to decimate the Epidemic Intelligence Service, a program that has trained public health rapid responders for decades. Envy of the world. Poof! www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

I can't seem to shake the MCU's hold on me... Despite everything, I actually quite liked Captain America 4. Yeah, it's a mess, and yeah it's still got all the same post-Endgame problems, and yeah the MCU is still falling apart, but... I dunno, liked it!

I've been able to brush off most of the erasure of trans people from government websites, but this one is REALLY getting under my skin. It's just complete revisionist history. How fucking dare they Old vs. new

Booked my covid vaccine booster today. Just seemed like a good time to lock that in...

On the day GOP senators confirmed a vaccine denier to run the country's HHS, there's a measles outbreak in Gaines County, Texas. At least 22 children are infected. 9 of them hospitalized. Last year, more than 13 percent of school-aged children in Gaines County received a vaccine exemption.

RFK Jr. is confirmed as HHS Secretary. One expert from @nwlc.org told me that in that role, he will have “the most opportunities to enact anti-abortion policies" out of any of Trump's nominees. ⤵️ www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

We only know this man is in Gitmo because Noem tweeted a propaganda photo that included him and his sister saw it. He has no criminal record. He entered the US in January and immediately made an appointment with CBP to claim asylum. They sent him to a concentration camp bc of his basketball tattoo.

NEW from @makenakelly.bsky.social: Chief Information Officers of at least three federal agencies have been replaced by Silicon Valley execs, including from Palantir and SpaceX. This could make it easier for DOGE engineers to access sensitive government systems: www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

That the Howard Dean scream had more political repercussions than literal Nazi salutes is a scary reflection of the moment we're in.

I mean, Dems promising to lose sure is one way to convince Trump not to rig or cancel the 2026 elections.

This is critically important. When asked to PROVE the claims that Elon is spewing on Xitter, Trump had nothing. Nothing. Until they present proof, no media outlet should repeat unsubstantiated claim this is about efficiency.

Overturning Sullivan has at least two votes on the Supreme Court — Thomas and Alito. Maybe more. I can’t overstate how catastrophic that would be for free expression in America in an environment where political and performative defamation litigation are common.

If you’re a Visa cardholder you can let them know you won’t be any longer if they do business with fElon. I called and they said they’re taking comments at [email protected]. Maybe if enough of us complain they’ll pull the deal.

Senator Schatz, @schatz.bsky.social, rejects idea that Dems should wait for Trump to touch 'most popular' programs to fight. "I'm not going to just wait until they touch the ACA. That's the kind of pundit-brain, poll-tested bullshit that got us into this mess." www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...

If we want to stop being reactive, one of the best things we can do is starting talking about & preparing for Republicans to destroy voting rights, corrupting the voting process itself, and possibly even ending elections themselves. We have been fighting things after they happen instead of before.

They are seeking to criminalize integration efforts across public life. We must be clear eyed and direct about what’s happening here. We have not witnessed this blatant of a comprehensive governmental attack on integration since the Civil Rights Movement. slate.com/news-and-pol...

The website is hosted by Go Daddy (who also provides the creator privacy for the site ). Whoever made the site registered it in November a few days after the election, which suggests they've been planning this for awhile. In 2023 Parsons, Go Daddy's founder said he was no longer a Trump "fan"

The United States Military Academy has just eliminated all Cadet clubs and activities for POC. Most of these have existed for decades like the Society of Black Engineers. They were there when I was a Cadet in 1987. All of the religious ones remain. This isn’t DEI. It’s white Christian Nationalism.

“Constitutional crisis” does not even begin to capture the radicalism of what is unfolding in the federal bureaucracy and of what Congress’s decision not to act may liquidate in terms of constitutional meaning.”

Or that the country's deadliest hurricane, 1900 Gavelston a hurricane was in part so deadly because US weather forecasters were racist. Hurricanes have gotten less deadly even as more of us live on the coast because of accurate weather forecasting

At a certain point, looking around to point fingers at people is counterproductive. We're in this moment and playing the blame game doesn't help. What matters is what we do next and how we survive this. It might mean a lot of strange alliances and strategic cooperation.

🚨 UPDATE: Suspended @greenparty.org.uk member Ali continues to suggest the party has quietly and strategically dissaffiliated from @stonewalluk.bsky.social Clarification 👇🏼 - this is FALSE - the party is STILL a member of the Diversity Champions Scheme - there are NO plans to leave the scheme

When the entire global economy collapses b/c some neo-Nazis tried to use LLMs to rewrite code they don't understand at the US Treasury, then will people finally admit these LLMs don't work and can't do the shit uneducated venture capitalists said they could?

A bit of professional disappointment that Wired beat me to it. But glad the info is out. I can confirm the key details of this report based on my own reporting -the name of the DOGE operative and that yes the reports about read only access is categorically false. Not only does Marko have full …

my new horseshoe theory is that leftist doomerism and liberal “better things aren’t possible” culture are a horseshoe leaving cringelib optimism (laudatory) and leftist “we take care of us” mutual aid pragmatism as the natural allies that need to put on the get along shirt already

Crucial angle on Elon Musk's takeover of Treasury's payment systems that people are missing: It's happening as a debt ceiling crisis looms, when you need nonpartisan people monitoring outgoing payments. Former Treasury and OMB officials explain this to me here: newrepublic.com/article/1910...

"I’m a Federal Worker. People Don’t Understand the Level of Heist Elon Musk Is Perpetrating." slate.com/news-and-pol...

I know we’re all used to complaining about the media, but it really is stunning how if you look at the front page of any major news site none are describing this as a coup, emergency, or even just a thing we should all be talking about. Democrats either. Just sleepwalking to tyranny.

If the New York Times reported on Trump's cabinet nominees constantly saying "I don't recall" in their hearings the same way they reported on Biden's memory gaffes and slip-ups, the front page every morning would be calling them senile and mentally unfit.

My first and definitely last time working with the Los Angeles Times. Editing out the most urgent point of an OpEd in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author’s clear intent is pretty shitty.

Gotta admit it's a hell of an evolutionary development for a brain parasite to infect a host specifically to drive it to take over a governmental health agency to further encourage the spread of parasites.

New, from me: Looking closer at the effort to induce mass civil servant resignations. *The offers are not real buyouts *Feds should read the fine print *If mass resignations occur, it is really bad for the rest of us donmoynihan.substack.com/p/compelling...
