By hot take: People are always freaking out about food being secretly lethally bad for you: Seed oils, GMO foods, MSG, etc. We’re mammals. Raccoons literally eat rotting garbage and we have the same basic equipment they do. If people aren’t being acutely poisoned it’s probably not a huge deal.

I had to take an MMR antibody test for a job recently, and even though I was vaccinated as a kid, I didn’t pass and needed to get a booster. It’s worth getting tested even if your parents were on top of things.

It’s time for to reboot an old classic. It’s time for New Yeller

This is one of those topics where if someone says they support a freeze, it immediately outs them as a bad person. Homelessness in the DTES is the great shame of Vancouver. We have money that could be spent to help these people, but that’s not happening.

Picked up a smart trainer second hand off FB marketplace. Hopefully this will keep me from losing 100% of my cycling fitness over the winter season going forward 🤞

Found this Chuck Jones Vince Guaraldi mashup that is simply lovely www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xdl...

You guys ever notice how dogs without tails seem to know they don’t have them and compensate by really going for it with their hips? Boxers love doing the butt wiggle.

Biochemistry is so wild, man. It borrows from all across the animal kingdom. Recently I learned: * An enzyme from honeybee venom was useful in purifying specific isomers a drug. * An oxygen reporter probe used sperm whale myoglobin gene to create a plasmid that makes cells produce it endogenously.

At what age does the fact that a common MATLAB function is called “cumtrapz” stop being funny? I haven’t hit it yet.

Extremely general point about our era: I think that operating in a mature industry or scientific field is way less fun and creatively gratifying than a greenfield one. That’s why we see so much interest in AI in research and tech innovation focused on skirting regulations vs adding real value.

Just thinking, on account of his conductive metal bones, Wolverine would explode like a tree if he was ever struck by lightning. Has anyone explored this in detail? 🤔

Feeling like one of those smart tool-using crows: dismantled my bench to get a metal tube I can use as a cheater bar to wrench off a stuck freewheel. And it worked!

Idea: slasher movie where the villain is an escaped bengal tiger let loose in a sleepy suburb

Why is this the default laugh reaction emoji: 😂 I laugh so hard I cry so infrequently that it seems disingenuous to use that react when someone tells me about Elon Musk’s Elden Ring build.

The lonely island and Seth Meyers podcast is the best. I finally know the origin of “Punch you in the jeans”

Congratulations to Monty! I was lucky enough to meet him in an airport last year. Super down to earth, chill guy. We talked for about 10 minutes and he signed an autograph for my nephew.

Wix ads are like: “I love two things: microbiology and dancing, and I made them into a successful business using Wix’s online tools.”

To the people of Quebec, in the spirit of national unity I need to tell you that Montreal-style bagels are the most important piece of Canadian cuisine, and are tied with insulin as Canada’s greatest discovery. With all my heart, thank you.

It’s interesting looking at replies to popular posts and how they’re almost always either slogans, glib little jokes, or edgy “I’d tell him where to stick it”-type comments. No one wants that. It’s why I almost never comment. Like, if you’ve got nothing, just don’t reply.

Just subscribed to Wired again. I had a subscription for years when I was growing up, and have always loved their long form articles. Glad to be back! The reporting they’re doing on DOGE is excellent.

I think neutron stars are the most remarkable stellar objects we can directly see. - heavier than the sun, but only about 30 km in circumference - dense as an atomic nucleus: a matchbox sized piece of neutron star would weigh 300 billion tons

Can’t be said enough: the right in Canada bleated on for years about patriotism & people not being proud of Canada, of wokeness, reconciliation, statue removal, etc as the problem. Then they are first to lay down in front of a foreign strongman who makes them half chub horny. It was all bullshit.

I’m lucky to have never worked somewhere that requires sick notes, but I’ve always wondered about the logistics. It takes me 2-3 weeks to get a doctor’s appointment, so how does anyone get these notes? www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

"We should cave to authoritarian bullies at the first sign of trouble and if necessary, sell out the country" is a heck of an ideology for a movement that spends 95% of its time castigating the left for ginned up conspiracies they found in a YouTube comment section.

I have decided that we ought to keep an eye on US-owned publications in Canada to see if they seem to be promoting the views of the annexationists who threaten our existence. I am not enthusiastic about this and would prefer if someone else would do it, but there does seem to be a pattern emerging.

This convention center I’m at has signs telling me not to drink directly out of the toilet.

I’m going to San Francisco to attend the Photonics West conference this weekend. I’m in the biology-focused sub-conference called BiOS, and I’m wondering how much of an effect the NIH freeze is going to have on it. It might be a ghost town. Thinking about all my US colleagues right now.

Today’s album: Heaven or Las Vegas by the Cocteau Twins Nothing calms the nerves like this album. I hear Cherry-Coloured Funk and I’m at ease

I got these audiotechnica headphones like 6 years ago. I haven’t charged them in literally a year and a half and they still work. I think I’ve discovered a miracle or something.

LinkedIn continues to be the place where the most exciting, hard hitting, and mentally stimulating news is broken

Opening this app first thing in the morning is like being woken up with an interrogation lamp shone straight into your face. Who needs caffeine when you’ve got cortisol

One of the proudest moments last year was when a cashier started talking to me in Icelandic at an Icelandic liquor store. I didn’t look like a tourist!

Rocky Mountain Bicycles, an icon of the north shore mountain biking just went under creditor protection. I hope they can find a new Canadian owner. My first “good” bike was a Rocky, and I still have it. This is sad

The ratio on this TVO story gives me a little bit of hope about Canadian politics, even if it’s a self-selected audience of bluesky users who follow TVO…
