Retinal pigmented epithelium plays an important role by sustaining rods and cones, which are the photoreceptors within the retina. It helps in the maintenance of cells, recycles visual pigments and forms a portion of the blood retina barrier #sciart #science #RareDiseaseDay2025

Cephalopods have their photoreceptors positioned apically in the neural retina, vs vertebrates, with photoreceptors located more basally. This creates a blind spot due to the routing of axons from the apical edge of the retina towards the back of the eye. So, cephalopods don’t have a blind spot?
