Vervain aka “enchanter’s herb” or “witch’s flower” was able to purify sacred spaces, sharpen blades, magically open locks and protect you from malicious sorcery. Or plague! It may have been used to make alter brooms during the Roman period too. Truly one for a witch’s garden #FolkloreThursday

So excited to showcase some of the fabulous illustrations from The Story of Witches today! First up, Baba Yaga, the iconic witch from Slavic fairy tales. She lives deep in the forest in her hut on chicken-leg stilts, surrounded by a skull-topped fence. 🎨 Katie Ponder #FolkloreThursday

Although there are wildly varying figures given, it is now loosely estimated that between 40,000 and 60,000 individuals across Europe and Colonial America were executed on charges of witchcraft during the period 1427-1782 CE. 🎨 Katie Ponder #FolkloreThursday

The Great Goddess - Maiden, Mother, Crone. 🎨 Katie Ponder #FolkloreThursday

A witch bottle, containing the urine of a "bewitched" individual, pins and other sharp or protective items, was either heated or buried as a form of counter magic, believed to break the power of a witch over their victim. 🎨 Katie Ponder #FolkloreThursday

From little black stalks to full on black blooms! The tulips are coming back and it won’t be long until they look this gorgeous again. Finally made it out into the garden today to have a potter after being poorly since the weekend 🖤 🌱

Don’t mind me, just resharing this for #worldbookday2025 #WorldBookDay as it really is a great collection of stories! And you can preorder it from The History Press now 👍👏

Hello #GardensHour it is crocus central here so I guess that’s what March means right now! A symbol of joy and cheerfulness in the language of flowers and it’s not hard to see why 🌱

Today marks World Wildlife Day, a vital reminder of the importance of protecting our planet’s wildlife. 🌏 For over 60 years, Wildlife Photographer of the Year has helped us see our natural world through a different lens, showcasing its beauty and the necessity to preserve it.

Hope this is ok to post for this weeks #FolkyFriday I just wanted to congratulate everyone who contributed to this new book by The History Press, about Scottish folklore. I’m currently reading a slightly advanced copy (it’s out in March) and it’s wonderfully written. Full of interesting tales 👏🖤

Would you cut this? 🌿 A future alive with buzzing hedgerows, singing Skylarks, and rich, healthy soil or one of silent fields, struggling farms, and nature in freefall? The UK Government has a choice. Tell them - Nature can’t afford a pay cut: action.rspb.org.uk/page/156168/... 📢

Did you know that crocus flowers close at night and in overcast or wet weather conditions? They have been recorded throughout history as the source of saffron and can symbolise rebirth due to their origin as either Crocus the mortal man transformed or sprouting his spilled blood #FolkloreThursday

Hellebores everywhere for #GardensHour this week and the sunshine is encouraging the crocus out as well 🥰 🌱

Gorgeous finds in the woods today! 🍄 #FungiFriends

Been working on a vampire inspired, little bit batty and little bit gothy reading bench with an arch above it plus a feature wall in the garden today! 🦇🖤 🌱

You know what else is influenced by the quintessential British fantasy works of both Tolkien and Arthurian legend? The Legend of Zelda. It even has the sword in the stone trope with a blade that glows in the presence of evil. Just putting that out there too 🙏😂

Seems to be confirmed by the Mirror that Universal Studios Bedford is indeed happening? 😯🥳 let’s hope they keep away from doing loads of HP and consider doing How To Train Your Dragon and Dracula here because you know, Whitby and Vikings are both perfect elements from Epic Universe you could use 😍

A classic symbol of optimism, happiness, devotion and resilience. The sunflower was said to turn towards the sun because of the nymph Clytie's adoration of Apollo who was actually transformed into this flower as a punishment after she got a rival nymph burnt alive #FolkloreSunday 🌱

Happy Valentine’s Day! 🖤🥰 Got some new gothic goodies this week and here is a pic of my bleeding heart from last year too because you can’t get much more romantic than that! Wishing you all a lovely day #FlowersOnFriday #ValentinesDay

Cross posting here for #GardensHour with the theme of ornaments and quirky plants, so here we are! I’ve got quite a lot of magical creatures in my garden now 🥰👍 🌱

Nature valentines. Thanks to my Patrons for keeping me drawing www.patreon.com/birdandmoon

Hyacinths should be growing back! They can symbolise regret and jealousy and are named after the lover of Apollo who was transformed after he died. With petals bearing the letters “ai ai” meaning alas. His burial mound was located at the feet of a statue of Apollo #FolkloreSunday 🌱
