Day 1 of duck banding camp.

Blue Ridge Wildlife Center posted this picture of a Lesser Scaup and I had to paint him.

Thoroughly enjoyed these drake portraits over the past few weeks.

This is actually the worst thing I’ve seen from federal granting agencies thus far.

I’m at the last stage of this little guy where I crowdsource what last touches he needs. After a week of fiddling, I think I’ve finally got a sense of the iridescence.

Painting, gardening, and reading a stack of articles on this cloudy Mardi Gras, remembering that it's just a Tuesday everywhere else I guess.

How your email finds me.

Oh, that's concerning. nih.gov

Among the other great points in this statement, “Every dollar spent on conservation in the US has a positive return of 2.4 times its original investment.” Conserving natural resources is good business. 🐟🐠🎣

Exclusive: The Nature Conservancy was told by @noaa.gov it had to use “Gulf of America” or lose its federal funding, according to a leaked email and memo sent to all staff this morning cc @heatmap.news heatmap.news/climate/natu...

My #BirdWhisperer art for this month's prompt of this sweet little Rock Dove.

I love kingfishers, regardless of the continent. I should do a series of them.

that would pay for the entire National Park Service budget for 33 years. but "government is inefficient"

I love this guy. He’s going to stay here and get framed.

Painting bigger than normal.

I know it's small in the whole scheme of things, but the bloodbath at NPS in Hawaii is almost certainly going to lead directly to the extinctions of no fewer than 4 native Hawaiian songbirds in the next 4-5 years.

My favorite paintings of this year so far. #art #birds

QRP with your wings 🪶

First two paintings from a new series I’m working on. Any ideas what I’m up to? #watercolor

Props to @jasondogwood.bsky.social for catching this… goggle obeying in advance…. Props to 🍎 for keeping it real

Wrap it up. My coffee exploded on me as I walked into the building this morning.

Went to the aviary on a field weekend for my grad duck class, fell in love with this guy accidentally. (Hoping the audio is working.)

Went to paint a bird this evening and the only thing that came out was a furious eagle. I’m sure that’s not related to anything going on over the last week or so.

Hey my #virology and #waterfowl people. We’re banding free-ranging waterfowl this weekend for a class. Where are we at with best practices for PPE these days for AIV? N95? Nitrile gloves? Bring some hospital level disinfectant for waders after? #wildlife

January 2025 reads because apparently it is now February. #books

Someone over on tumblr requested a snowy owl. #watercolor

New research suggests a bias against female birds could have a negative impact on science and bird conservation www.audubon.org/news/researc...

January's prompt for #BirdWhisperer was the Common Loon! Done with watercolor and white gouache.

This is bad news. It suggests reassortment of circulating H5N1 viruses with viruses containing N9 NA. Although this indicates reassortment with avian viruses, it's still bad. Reassortment makes pandemics. The last 3/4 flu pandemics (and likely 1918 too) were reassortant viruses.

GenAI has polluted image search results, especially for animal pics. It’s now basically impossible to find accurate art references. Enter this: a repository of open-access, AI-free images of wild & exotic taxa. Artists creating *without AI* have blanket permission for derivative/transformative use.

It really was a magical week down here.

If there’s a nemesis bird for painting, then that’s hummingbirds for me. Do you go intricate and match every feather? Do you go for vibes? How do you get the sheen? Do you change your mind half way through? #watercolor #vibesdefinitelyvibes

After 3 snow days here in Baton Rouge (4 for the k-12 kids!), I'm being told that I should go to a place called "the lab" and do something called "prep for class". Really odd.

Not sure if anxious killdeer is the start of a new 2025 bird series, but we'll see how it goes.
