Disturbing to see the continued growth of the volkisch nationalist AfD.

Trumpet of Patriots? A real patriot wouldn't need to so blatantly copy America.

By my math, of those who had ever had Long Covid, 6% had it resolve by the time the study was completed (a mean of 24 months after infection). Might as well call it Forever Covid 😭.

Just as we surrendered to perpetual plague, we're surrendering to unlimited global warming.

Finished Chain-Gang All-Stars by Adjei-Brenyah, and enjoyed it. Extrapolates nicely from the US prison system into a The Running Man-esque dystopia (but with serious bite rather than wrestling camp). Nice to get some real George Floyd energy, in the wake of *gestures at the sad state of the US*. πŸͺπŸ“šπŸ’™

It turns out that ignoring a pandemic doesn't make it go away. Long Covid incidence is actually rising over time with the later Omicron variants.

Covid 'brain fog' likely factor in train's near-miss www.1news.co.nz/2025/01/30/c... A locomotive engineer experiencing brain fog after #COVID infection likely played a role in a KiwiRail coal train's near miss with another train, an investigation has found. No one could have foreseen this. πŸ™„

It really puts Australia's dismal dismissal of Long Covid in the shade that even the goose stepping GOP takes it more seriously than anyone in Aus politics. Wouldn't trust antivax ghoul RFK at all on this, but shoutout and gold star to Indiana Senator Todd Young.

This is neat - anything which gets books away from Amazon's monopoly (and dreadful labour practices) is a plus.

The thing you have to do is stand in solidarity with everyone- the second you start deciding some people aren’t worth protecting- you lose.

Roth is consistently the absolute best chronicler of Late American Malaise

Reading Lucretius' On The Nature of the Universe, and it's neat seeing how much they could figure out by deduction alone in ancient times (atoms! other planets!)... And, conversely, the places where all the theorising in the world can't substitute for actual science. πŸ’™πŸ“š

One and a half years, so far.

Having finished Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, I'll echo the thoughts of my earlier self - great book, a delightful time. Highly recommended to anyone who surfs the intersections of fantasy and more literary stuff. πŸ’™πŸ“š

When someone shows you who they are, believe them.

This is "living with Covid" without any mitigations.

In which I have a bit of a rant about how shite the current climate change policy debate is just 5 months from the election. www.theguardian.com/business/gro...

β€œThe extreme examples of patients being admitted to psych hospitals are the tragic tip of iceberg. Patients who aren’t believed may struggle to get any medical care at all, or get pushed toward therapies that don’t work” Doctors NEED to stop assuming anything they don’t understand is psychological:

Reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell at the moment, and it's just delightful. If Jane Austen wrote about wizards, it'd be this book. πŸ“šπŸ’™

Watching the media's embrace of crank ideas (everything RFK, the US buying Greenland and/or Canada) because cranks are in power really demonstrates their obscene deference to power. Whatever the powerful think is treated as prima facie worthy of consideration, just because they're powerful.

Crime has no consequences, if you're a special kind of aristocrat. America's such an 17th century-ass country.

This, from @redford.bsky.social, is excellent.

Yeah you know what we’re not going to do as another pandemic looms on the horizon?? This ableist nonsense about age and pre-existing conditions that is meant to trick people into not caring about each other enough to disregard basic public health precautions.

This is why American politics matters to the rest of us.

The Democratic party have learned nothing and forgotten nothing.

"The greatest crime of the poor in the eyes of the wealthy has always been to strike back. To fail to suffer in silence and instead disrupt their lives and their fantasies of a compassionate society that coincidentally set them on top. To say no." - Shannon Chakraborty, Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi

My 2024 in reading πŸ’™πŸ“š. It was a year of turning more toward literary fiction and classics, where I found much to enjoy. But I struggled to gather the brain power (thanks, LC!) for much non-fiction. I rate hard, as you can tell - a 3/5 is still a solidly good book that delivers on what it aims for.

For the height of this sort of deliciousness is to have nothing but the blanket between you and your snugness and the cold of the outer air

Great piece from Liz Pelly in Harper's about Spotify's drive to replace artists with cheap muzak slop.

On the third day of Christmas, the government sent to me, Three coal mine extensions, Two restrictions on protest, And a Victorian bushfire burning free.

This essay is great. How the sausage is made, and why the sausage is 99% slop by volume.

Such a busy bee. #throwbackthursday to 2022

"What this sleight of hand conceals is the fact that the social end of the pandemic was manufactured to restart the engine of capital as quickly as possible to quell a newly-radicalized society."

The London Review of Books, Harper's, and N+1. It's nice (and surprisingly cheap) to have nice packages of words turn up as letterbox surprises.

After a PEM crash, it takes a while before my concentration comes back well enough to seriously read. So the books just sit there on my bedside table. Taunting me.

What. The. Actual. Hell?! "Face masks would also be banned at protests, with Allan saying they were being used by some demonstrators to conceal their identities." So, disabled/immunocompromised people have just lost their right to protest and stay safe!? SHAME ON VIC GOVT! #COVIDisntover
