The deadline to apply for Ancient Worlds, Modern Communities is this week! This initiative provides mini-grants of up to $2,000 to support public engagement projects, and the next application deadline is Friday, May 16. www.classicalstudies.org/outreach/anc...

I guess this is as good a time as any to read Rerum Novarum? www.vatican.va/content/leo-...

All eyes on the wikipedia page for Leo XIII.

Probably only a few out there will want to read this. But if you're one of them, you won't want to miss it!

In hindsight, the answer to this was: Any American.

Well, I guess instead of working I just pointlessly hit refresh for the next hour?

Most alarming papal name would be "Impius." (Though tbh, "Pius" would also be pretty alarming.)

Habemusne papam?

For those following the papal election: who would you say is a dark horse candidate? Someone whose election would shock you, while still being in the realm of the possible?

Best papal name is surely Enea Silvio Piccolomini taking the name Pius, thus becoming Pius Aeneas. Or are there better ones?

We are pleased to announce that the 2025 Erich S. Gruen Prize is now open for submissions! All graduate students in North America are invited to enter the annual competition for the best graduate research paper on multiculturalism in the ancient Mediterranean www.classicalstudies.org/awards-and-f...

At his point, it seems like Hegseth is just feeding 60-million-dollar fighter jets to the Red Sea.

I had never noticed this, but on the copyright page of Lindsay's widely-used translation of Apuleius (1960), he writes a small poem-- apparently on anxiety about the atom bomb and the hope that a solution can be found in the pages of...Apuleius. (You've gotta love that optimism)

Word of the Day. Though technically "room (locking with a key)," the word "conclave" is also the standard, unmarked word for "room" in classical Latin (at least, as argued by E. Leach in "Oecus on Ibycus")

The Rudolph Masciantonio Support Grant for Student Teachers of Latin provides financial support to an individual during their semester of student teaching in a Latin program at a K-12 school. Apply by May 30! www.classicalstudies.org/awards-and-f...

That's right! And the JCT is also open access, which is greatly appreciated: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

I notice that the new Classical Outlook has reviews of Latin novellas. The first academic/pedagogical journal to do so? In any case, it's a welcome resource, given the proliferation of Latin novellas and their varying levels of quality.

While people are dunking on the kerning of the tomb of Pope Francis, let me point out that Michelangelo totally messed up his kerning on the Pietà.

The inscription for Francesco's tomb: Times New Roman. Which I will forever think of as the Vatican Guesthouse of fonts.

“An estimated 350,000 manuscripts have been inventoried from the dozens of old libraries of the city of Timbuktu, whose reputation for education and its medieval monuments have been favourably compared to universities.” www.africanhistoryextra.com/p/what-did-t...

Conference on emotional persuasion in early modern scientific texts (Neo-Latin and vernacular). At the Warburg Inst. but also online (May 15-16): warburg.sas.ac.uk/events/emoti...

First pope who was already a bishop when elevated to the Holy See: Marinus I (882-884) When you think of it, why make someone Bishop of Rome when they're *already* a bishop of somewhere else. #popefacts

*facepalm*

Last pope to use his baptismal name as his papal name: Pope Marcellus II (aka Marcello Cervini, 1555) Head of the vatican library, his papacy was expected to bring major reforms-- until it was cut short only 21 days after his election. Ripe for a historical fiction novel? #popefacts

Last pope to *wear* a crown: Paul VI (1963) Last pope to *have* a crown: Francis (received as a gift in 2016) The picture is Francis's face upon receiving the crown. His expression is priceless. #PopeFacts

Think you know L'Année philologique (APh)? Think again! We are excited to invite you to an informative webinar where we will introduce the new interface of APh. Librarians, scholars, students, and anyone interested in learning more are welcome to join. www.classicalstudies.org/scs-news/upc...

The country's falling apart, but the strawberries are doing okay.

After a dozen years, it can be easy to forget how radical the pope's name was. I was in St. Peter's square when they announced that there was a new pope and his name was Francesco. People were so surprised they couldn't take it in. The guy next to me was like "Lui è francese?"
