I am very happy to join the great Middle East and North Africa team at Chatham House as an associate fellow:

Very nice Sunday cc @aaronstein1.bsky.social

“There will not be a return to the status quo... (but) The US will remain our most important partner. That’s not going to change. And so the issue now is to cut our losses, manage the relationship as best we can, while also keeping an eye on diversifying relations.”

I was on @johnivison.bsky.social's podcast : -I take Trump's 51st state threat seriously but not literally -Canada should diversify but geography means we have no choice but to manage US relations; we should offer a grand bargain on trade/defence/security nationalpost.com/opinion/ivis...

Thread and sub-threads on key themes from the three days of the very productive Yemen International Forum in Amman, Jordan, organised by the most excellent Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies, where I am a non-resident fellow:

And of course knafeh for desert

This was really, really good Last dinner in Amman:

Day 3 of the Yemen International Forum in Amman, with the 1st session on water insecurity -Yemen is one of the most water poor countries in the world -laws & regulations are poorly enforced -there is a critical lack of resources -there is much water waste -war makes things worst

Amman - way too short trip here:

Day 2, session 1 of the Yemen International Forum in Amman, with a session on challenges for humanitarian/development aid in Yemen. It's a challenging environment: -Houthi jailing of aid workers -US aid freeze & FTO designation -competing demands for aid (Sudan, Gaza, Syria...)

Great session at the Yemen International Forum in Amman taking stock of the Presidential Leadership Council: -after 3 years, it remains weak & fragmented -this prevents it from strongly opposing the Houthis -it was the product of regional intervention, not Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue

«Elle a répété à plusieurs reprises et défendu des positions complètement alignées avec les positions de Poutine en Russie, de Assad en Syrie [...] C'est un manque de jugement extraordinaire [...] Et là, elle va être au cœur de l'appareil de renseignement du pays.»

Mon entrevue ce matin avec Patrick Lagacé au 98.5FM sur la confirmation de Tulsi Gabbard comme Directrice nationale du renseignement: www.985fm.ca/audio/678738...

I told the BBC: While the trade battle would likely force Canada to look for partners elsewhere, it ultimately can't escape geography, he said... "That is why Canada must absolutely now focus on salvaging the relationship as much as possible," Juneau said. www.bbc.com/news/article...

I told @thenewarab.bsky.social that Houthi Red Sea attacks have allowed them to pocket perhaps US$2 billion in fees, mobilize domestic support & expand their regional influence. So "it strains the imagination" to think they will stop after the Gaza ceasefire. www.newarab.com/analysis/wil...

Extremely valuable book, and a lot of nonsense might have been spared had it been more widely read

Okay, after a crazy day I'm going to start reading the Report from the Public Inquiry on Foreign Interference. (Don't say I don't know how to have a good time.) This is a Canada-ish thread so maybe you want to mute it. But I'll be posting some takeaways as we go. Weeee!

One of the main points in the foreign interference commission's final report: there are still important flaws in how we connect intelligence to policy making in Canada. That is precisely the topic of the book @stephaniecarvin.bsky.social and I wrote: www.sup.org/books/politi...

As the United States confronts a weakened but nuclearizing Iran, it must be careful not to drive Tehran into Moscow’s arms, write @nicolegrajewski.bsky.social and Ori Rabinowitz.

For "On Defense and Security", the Centre for International and Defence Policy (CIDP) podcast, I spoke with @stephaniecarvin.bsky.social and @thomasjuneau.bsky.social on the new Trump term, and some challenges in store, for Canada and everywhere else. Listen here: youtu.be/ebyVpD0jsjs?...

🎙️The first episode of our new podcast Secure Line is up! @leahwest-nsl.bsky.social @stephaniecarvin.bsky.social and I sit down with @thomasjuneau.bsky.social and @justinling.ca to talk security & intelligence under a second Trump presidency. open.spotify.com/episode/0Q31...

Our first episode of Secure Line is live! This week we are joined by @justinling.ca and @thomasjuneau.bsky.social to discuss what Trump 2.0 means for Canadian national security. Check us out on Spotify, Apple or YouTube and subscribe if you dig it. open.spotify.com/episode/0Q31...

First time skiing this year this morning:

There is no way Egypt or Jordan would ever agree to this. The Egyptian and Jordanian governments would simply not survive. (also it would be ethnic cleansing, a crime against humanity, and it is insane the US president is casually saying it).

Join us at the book launch for “Canada Among Nations: Twenty-First Century National Security” Our keynote speaker will be the National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minster, Ms Drouin. Places are limited, so please RSVP early!

I am a couple of days late on this, but hopefully it can lead to good news (Tsurkov is a top notch researcher, unjustly held hostage in Iraq): Israeli-Russian hostage Tsurkov is alive and Iraq is working on her release: Iraqi FM english.alarabiya.net/News/middle-...

Was pleased to receive my copy of “Canada’s Defence Challenges in the Indo-Pacific” - a short edited collection in which @thomasjuneau.bsky.social and I have a piece on Canada and AUKUS. (Although that feels like a lifetime ago!) Free to read below! www.queensu.ca/cidp/sites/c...

The US designates the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (more precisely, re-lists them: the first Trump administration also did so but Biden de-listed & instead designated them as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, a less severe measure). www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

What does the second Trump administration mean in terms of intelligence cooperation with Canada and other US partners and allies? See this book co-edited with @justinmassie.bsky.social and Marco Munier, and with chapters by a range of great experts, where we explore related questions.

I will give a 2-day course on Iran (history, politics, foreign policy) on 11-12 February (in person) with the University of Ottawa's Professional Development Institute. Open to government professionals and others. -@uOttawaPDI Registration details: pdinstitute.uottawa.ca/PDI/Courses/...

"Warring parties in Yemen, especially the Houthis, further repressed civil society and obstructed and endangered the provision of humanitarian aid in 2024, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2025." www.hrw.org/news/2025/01...

Reuters reports that the Houthis have announced that they will only target with attacks in the Red Sea ships linked to Israel after the ceasefire in Gaza, and that they will resume attacks on US& UK-linked ships if their attacks on the Houthis continue.

ICYMI: I was on The Decibel, the Globe & Mail podcast, on Friday to talk about the Israel-Hamas ceasefire & the exchange of hostages/prisoners that started today. I explained why I'm cautiously optimistic for the short term, pessimistic for the long term www.theglobeandmail.com/podcasts/the...

When the GOATs get together, you listen.
