Global, land, and ocean temperature change distributions since the 1880s. A very clear warming signal in all of them. Data: NASA GISS / GISTEMP (base period: 1951–1980). #climate #ClimateChange #GlobalWarming #DataVisualization #dataviz 🌍🌡️📈

Snap! Trap-jaw ant (Orectognathus mjobergi) from Australia just caught herself a large collembolan prey. What's interesting here is that the ant has to carry it high up in the air to prevent it from being dragged on the ground and potentially picking up mites, fungi etc'.

I have a bunch of pictures of tiny tiny wasps. They are very cool and they come in alm sorts of shapes and colors, but they are very hard to photograph, mainly because of their size, but also because they move around a lot haha. #macro #hymenoptera #insects #parasitoids

I'm excited to share my new research published today with @oryxthejournal.bsky.social about a topic close to my heart - The work to stop wildlife poaching in the Mediterranean. Open access: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Here is your Saturday Spider. I found it in the Peruvian Amazon a few years ago. Top is the front, bottom is the same spider from behind. When I showed it to @alexwild.bsky.social, he dubbed it the "Butt-head Spider." Perhaps the butt-face makes would-be predators think they've been spotted. 🐙🌿🕷️

Whip spider (Paraphrynus laevifrons) covered with chloropid fly puparia. The parasitoid fly attacks the eggs carried by the female. When done, the maggots climb on the "childless" mom's back and pupate. She protects them during this period thanks to her motherly instincts.

I wrote for Slate about how a conservative think tank plans to "identify and target" Wikipedia editors who it claims are abusing their position—a dangerous escalation that shifts the fight from debating edits to going after the editors themselves. slate.com/technology/2...

“Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic,” they said. “That means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice and a third, a fourth. Then what happens?”

4 species of Phidippus spotted in 2024 - all male, all shot in situ, NE Oklahoma: 1 Phidippus putnami (found on fencepost near garden) 2 Phidippus clarus (on sunflower) 3 Phidippus whitmani (on lichenous rock in woods) 4 Phidippus insignarius (rock in woods)

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests. We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason. ALSO.

Now we know why they call them petals. Hummingbird sphinx moth with a little bit of balance assistance with its front feet. #moth #invertebrate #LastSummer

Finally had time to set up an account here. So what better way to start than with the elusive blue #Thismia goodii from Sabah, #Borneo.

Sanderling Narcissus 🪶

One insect that just screams blue is the predaceous traffic-light katydid (Yes, I just made that name up) Arachnoscelis feroxnotha that is endemic to the Osa peninsula in Costa Rica. Please excuse the harsh lighting, it's a very old photo, in fact it is a film scan from 2003! #BlueBugs #BlueMonday

I just realized I would do a disservice if I didn't mention Sabethes! Hands down my favorite mosquito. This photo was highly commended in @nhm-london.bsky.social's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. You can read about it here: gilwizen.com/wpy-beautifu... #BlueBugs #BlueMonday

How about some blue spiders? Here is a Brazilian jewel tarantula (Typhochlaena seladonia). This species is now iconic so if you are not familiar with it... you're welcome. A very small tarantula that lives in a makeshift tent on tree bark in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. #BlueBugs #BlueMonday

There is no greater wildlife experience on the planet than seeing wild Silverback Gorillas from the ground! No safari vehicles separating you...just you, the gorillas and the surrounding jungle! #Art #Photography

Research on CA fires shows a majority of the extra burned area in recent years is explained by a moisture gap (vapor pressure deficit). Warmer air expands the capacity to hold moisture and demands that extra moisture from vegetation. Over the long term that drys the ground out.

Hey all, I made a Bug Friends starter pack a while ago and have added a few accounts since then. If you enjoy insects, spiders, and other arthropods then this is a nice list for you. go.bsky.app/DCu5DxX

If you're going to come into my mentions being rude and saying I'm a shitty science communicator because I'm a little loose with the word "bug", I'm gonna block you, unfortunately. This life, it is short, lighten up.

My favourite fact about Iceland is that we have many, many crime writers but only one forensic pathologist, and he was so busy answering all of their questions that he decided to have a small seminar for writers to get some peace. It immediately sold out so he had another one that also sold out.

Il est probable que d'ici 2070 de l'huile d'olive du Beaujolais ou d'Alsace soit produite ! In Colombia, some populations of the elongate twig ant Pseudomyrmex gracilis have an orange booty (sorry about the technical jargon); I thought this was a different species when I saw it because I'm used to our Texan ones with black butts. (Minca, Colombia).

Fearsome velvet ant (not really, it beetle)

This is Gnathophyllum americanum - otherwise known to divers as the Bumblebee Shrimp. Found across the Indo-Pacific, it is quite a small little invert at around 2.5cm maximum size. #🦑 #🦐 #UnderwaterPhotography

In the UK, we have one eurypauropod, Trachypauropus britannicus, a sclerotised and flattened type of pauropod. Pauropods are a sister group of the millipedes and centipedes, and are cute, tiny and have bifurcated antennae, unique for any animal with antennae. #soil #cute #mesofauna #soilanimal

Do you think molting feels good like exfoliating or bad like shedding your endometrial lining?

⭐ 2024 Top Finds/Pics ⭐ I mean, do I even need to explain why? 😂 . . . This is a male stalk-eyed #fly from Costa Rica. Females lack the hammerhead while males "compare sizes" for a chance to mate. Evolution is magical 🪄 #Ulidiidae: #Plagiocephalus Collected by @flyliceresearch.bsky.social

No locality posting this week, as I will be traveling. Here's a Mishana Poison Frog (Ranitomeya amazonica) from NE Peru. They are small as frogs go, and this adult comfortably on my thumbnail :) #herps #frogs #NaturePhotography

Spruce grouse have a reputation for only moving when they feel like it. I've had to get out of the car and chase them off the road. This one was feeding next to one of his less lucky brethren. Either really metal or completely oblivious. Your choice :) 🌿🪶

Here's a beetle. Don't know what kind. Saw it in Brazil about two months ago. I thought it was a cool little critter with some subtle dark blue going on, plus I thought the short bristly hairs on its back were kind of interesting. We parted friends. 🐙🌿 #insects
