In case you haven't googled it yet: The name "Gulf of Mexico" (Spanish: golfo de México; French: golphe du Mexique, later golfe du Mexique) 1st appeared on world map in 1550 & a historical account in 1552. Its been the most common name since mid-17th century, when it was still a Spanish sea.
