Had lots of fun recreating a pattern @n-gons.bsky.social recently posted but with a minor twist using #TileFarm studio. I used two colors for clarity, but this is made using a single tile based on a geometric series of 30-60-90 triangles. #tessellation #iTeachMath #Math #MTBoS #mathart

Here’s a cool 3Dish Tile Farm logo I designed in #TileFarm studio inspired by a design @n-gons.bsky.social posted earlier this year. What math do you see in this? #iTeachMath #MathArt #Hexagon

Playing around in #tilefarm studio and discovered you can make the hat tile out of a tessellation made out of 30-60-90 triangles. This is a fun and somewhat challenging tessellate then color activity. #tessellation #hattile #iTeachMath #Math #MTBoS

A9 #ElemMathChat Thank you for hosting, I had fun, won’t be in KC but have fun and hope your session goes well!

A8: #ElemMathChat I think a lot of those promises are just somebody talking who is trying to get attention. I think for now, stay focused on being the best teacher possible and taking care of and encouraging your students

A7: #ElemMathChat I can’t think of too many risks, the benefits are helping everyone see how beautiful and useful math is!

#ElemMathChat A6: I don’t think every lesson always needs to be culturally responsive, some stuff can just be math. I think it is important for kids to feel that math is welcoming and culturally relevant, but sometimes the joy of math is just how simple and universal it is

#ElemMathChat A5: Including more open ended things that allow students to use their own words and own ideas. I think math talks like Notice & Wonder are really good. It is always so exciting to see all of the unique things kids see and say

#ElemMathChat A4: I think it is hard to say. In an ideal world, yes, but it’s harder in practice. I think there is serious danger of tokenism; it can be hard to bridge the gap between “this sounds like a great idea on paper” and “this works for all classrooms”

#ElemMathChat A3: I am an artist to the bone, with a complex cultural background, and I love how art allows anybody of any background to express their unique culture. I tend to look for opportunities for students to use their own artistry to express their unique identities and cultures.

#ElemMathChat A2: I think it’s sometimes dangerous to make anything mandatory. I love culturally responsive teaching practices, but have experiences of being forced to do things as a teacher that some administrator came up, not knowing how flat they would fall in an actual classroom full of kids.

#ElemMathChat A1: In my first math class in college I just absolutely could not keep up with what the professor was saying and could not read his handwriting, and my SAT scores were low for my school and I said, I guess I am not that smart compared to these kids, that was the last math class I took

#ElemMathChat I grew up in Albuquerque and remember Mrs. Russell would give us little cutouts shaped like hot air balloons and we got to draw whatever we wanted in them then when it was somebody’s birthday you made a poster for them with a balloon from everyone in the class. Still have my poster!

Hello #ElemMathChat, I am a former and still part-time teacher, but spend most my time building the education app Tile Farm, I live in Los Angeles

Working on making some more math talk content in #TileFarm studio. Which one doesn’t belong and why? #iTeachMath #geometry #mathTalk

I used to be quite ignorant as a young adult. But do you know what changed my mind each time? Art. Art is the best thing to get into the hearts of others and help them see something new. Just make something completely sincerely. Everything else falls into place. There is a reason for what we do.

More musical instrument art made in #TileFarm Studio. Here’s a piano made out of 888 rhombi. #math #mathArt #rhombus #iTeachMath

Here’s a saxophone I made out of isosceles triangles in #TileFarm studio #math #mathart #saxophone #iteachmath

Here’s a fun low floor/high ceiling #mathtalk activity I’ve been working on in #TileFarm: What’s next? At the low floor I could see a simple qualitative description. At the high ceiling I could see a function describing the perimeter to tiles ratio for the nth-term of the sequence. #math #iTeachMath
