Amazing turnout German elections 84%. Highest since reunification

German election exit poll: CDU/CSU 29% (respectable, just about), AfD 19.5% (long-term worrying but no late shock), SPD 16% (historic low); Greens 13.5% (just below last time); Left 8.5% (huge last-minute spurt); FDP 4.9% (may/may not get in)

Been great working with colleagues in the AI and Humanity Lab and taking with students in Hong Kong University about VR and olfaction. Been a busy week! Good merch too!

German voters head to polls facing world of change as far right waits in the wings

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

80 years after Popper’s The Open Society and its Enemies, J. Alexander McKenzie has written a book for @lsepress.bsky.social defending the Open Society, published weeks before Trump returns to office. I interviewed him for @philosopher1923.bsky.social. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZUO...

I think the biggest hit to German national pride was a few years ago where the Swiss Railway Operator threatened to ban DB from running service into Switzerland (because late running services has a massive knock-on impact) but said that the Italians were fine.

A great opportunity to work with excellent people, and in a really nice place.
