My home country is no longer a democracy (to the extent it ever really was). It's impossible to fight back against fascism using the old rules and procedures. They don't apply anymore. Not sure when people will realize this.

I am so deeply uninterested in AI. Just think of all the 🤩 stories that aren't being covered by journalists, the worthy projects that aren't being funded, the institutional challenges that aren't being addressed by uni administrators — bc their 👀 are all focused on this dumb product nobody asked for

Someone better remind AI what snitches get.

Super happy and proud to report that my student, Connie Yu, has won the student paper competition at the @hazcenter.bsky.social at the University of Colorado! She’s the 4th @mountroyalu.bsky.social student to win it in 14 years— an impressive run for MRU disaster students! Congrats, Connie!

My best friend and cherished coauthor, @kristenbarberphd.bsky.social and I often joke about living the same life, and having most everything in common. As evidence, I offer you our citation counts (15 years into our careers). Pretty wild, eh? #Twinning

Corporate leaders are obsessing over GDP per capita. But, if you look at just about any number that would meaningfully tell you how well our economy is doing, Canada does better than the U.S. @mendelmatt.bsky.social @jimstanford.bsky.social #alwayscanada #never51 #gdp #cdnpoli #cdnecon

Must watch war speech by Justin Trudeau. Few outside of Canada understand our combination of civility, empathy and steel in our spine - this speech explains all that. Not a foul word spoken. Not one inch of retreat. Long Live Canada Vive Le Canada #ElbowsUp www.youtube.com/watch?v=83f4...

TL;DR: The @ucalgary.bsky.social admins fell over themselves to make up rules & to arbitrarily apply others. They were willing to violate students' right to assembly & expression *for the sole reason that they didn't agree with the students' position*. www.readtheorchard.org/p/ucalgary-p...

My dear friend's kid is among this group of youth who have sued the state of Virginia for violating their right to a safe climate through their policies promoting fossil fuel use. Their case has made it to the state Supreme Court!! 💪 🌎 We need to be doing this here in Alberta.

It's not a demolition site it's a mass grave. It's not a demolition site it's a crime scene. It's not a demolition site its a homeland. It's not a demolition site it's Palestine. It's not a demolition site it's a genocide.

F*ck Trump. Buy only Canadian. 🇨🇦

I have to fly to the US for a work trip, and this makes me nervous. When you introduce chaos into the fed. gov’t, you get chaos on the ground. Has nothing to do with DEI, and everything to do with sudden layoffs, staffing changes, budget cuts, & endemic uncertainty. time.com/7211690/wash...

I mean this when I say Elon is the most dangerous man in the world. Truly supervillain level of danger.

New article just dropped. I did an analysis of the written and spoken discourse and rhetoric of Calgary-based think tank Friends of Science, who denies the scientific consensus on climate change. Have a read— it’s open access! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Of course. University administrators are not "bold" (despite what the hiring advertisements say they should be). They are mostly weak-kneed, smarmy, yes-men/women/people. They'll ingratiate themselves to whatever right-wing anti-intellectual politician is in power in order to keep their jobs.

Bullies get their kicks from antagonizing others--and from seeing the targets of their bullying squirm. Hanging around with other bullies doesn't offer that same satisfaction, and it risks having other bullies turn on them for fun, instead.

Spending my sabbatical year writing a book, and apparently there are people who are using AI to churn out entire 250-page books in 2 minutes. 😫

New pre-print on @socarxiv.bsky.social to share for colleagues interested in climate change, denial, and think tanks: "Denial and Misinformation in Defence of the Tar Sands: The Case of a Canadian Think Tank." osf.io/preprints/so...

Hey everyone, thanks for all the follows. Still figuring this thing out. Reminds me a lot of Twitter back in the day. Let's hope Bluesky is not discovered by all the bots, trolls, and Elon Musks.
