Trump Administration Stalls Scientific Research Despite Court Ruling. Story by Ben Mueller. Gift link: nyti.ms/435szDm

Great PhD opportunity at Donders in the Netherlands where we will be involved in supervising the modelling part :-)

We have a very exciting 4-year PhD position available at the @dondersinst.bsky.social, to better understand how neuronal populations generate magnetic fields and how to measure those intracranially, with Corette Wierenga & @gauteeinevoll.bsky.social. For more info: neuronanotech.eu/phd-projects...

Here it is finally: Our mathematical methods book for life scientists! Aimed at advanced undergrads and beginning grad students, plus all those who want a deeper look at the math behind quantitative biology. @portugueslab.bsky.social. 1/3

Pro tip: when explaining the NIH cuts to friends and family, use "research infrastructure" rather than "indirect costs" or, godforbid, "overhead." DOGE just slashed the budget for research infrastructure. It's accurate and it drives home that the fight is over jobs and facilities, not "waste."

JFC In addition to the patients at the clinical center, the NIH is home to many nonhuman animals who play critical roles in medical science. And they need to eat.

Trying to decide on the best form of uplift to engage in tomorrow? If you (like me) find doing uplifting, consider a bit of much needed Science Advocacy, perhaps something from this list: www.nicolecrust.com/advocacy Bonus: tell me about it and I’ll send you one of these fabulous pins ⬇️

Excited to share my first first-author paper out now in PNAS! By comparing retinotopically-defined visual areas in macaques and humans, we found that evolutionary expansion is reflected in the size, not number, of visual areas. #neuroskyence #neuroscience www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Interested in understanding how things work? In particular the tools you use to study the brain? Join us at TENSS 2025 where we brainstorm ideas, build and debug microscopes, electrophysiology and behavior rigs amidst the picturesque Transylvanian hills! tenss.ro Apply by: February 16th!

🚨🚨🚨 New Dataset out! Today we release the THINGS Ventral-stream Spiking Dataset (TVSD) to become part of @martinhebart.bsky.social's THINGS initiative! In a @cp-neuron.bsky.social paper out today with Feng Wang, Matthew Self and Pieter Roelfsema, we describe the dataset in detail. More info 👇

We value things differently depending on the situation. A fascinating paper shows that the hippocampus feeds contextual information to the prefrontal cortex by altering theta wave phase alignment, enabling the PFC to adjust value judgments accordingly. www.nature.com/articles/s41... #neuroscience

Quite impressive that mech interp has gone from “Receptive fields of single neurones in the cat's striate cortex” to “What is the other 85% of V1 doing?” in only a matter of years.

I'm struck by how grad students in psych and neuro programs aren't generally expected to know basic facts about animal learning. For the psychologists, it has an odor of behaviorism, and for the neuroscientists it has an odor of psychology. Yet it's so fundamental (in my view).

All the films from my favourite film director (joint with David Lynch) free online? Incredible.

Who is the best professor at managing their lab that you know?

I made a systems neuroscience starter pack, focused on experimentalists who study the brain at the level of populations of neurons! Also want to be on the list? Reply or DM me a picture of your ephys rig or 2p setup and I'll add you 🤭 go.bsky.app/UiqX7ry
