I met Lol Crawley nearly 30 years ago, when he was a clapper loader. To this day he was one of the most generous, encouraging and unassuming people I’ve met from the film industry. Thrilled to see him win the Oscar for best cinematography.

A really interesting listen. I knew nothing about this movie until hearing this. I remember seeing the VHS on shelves, thinking from the tagline that it was Goldberg teaming with a time-portaled Barney to fight crime in 1995. I didn't realise it was more an ambitious, world building sci-fi epic.

You can hear Jeff Goldblum and only Jeff Goldblum delivering that punchline.

I think the angular way Burt Lancaster was dressed and photographed for Sweet Smell of Success is the closest a human being has ever looked to a Max Fleischer Superman design.

If you're a fan of film music, this looks like a must purchase. I only mentioned this amazing adaptation score on here less than two weeks ago so it's thrilling to see it get a first class expanded release.

Watching this clip out of context, its heightened style, complete with a beheading in a crumbling urban setting, reminds me of the 1st Highlander movie. The Director Stephen Hopkins was 2nd unit director on Highlander & had worked on music videos as a storyboard artist/designer for Russell Mulchahy.

"I think Amazon's going to bring it younger." I throw some suggestions into the Next Bond trilby for the BBC as they circle who the 007th 007 COULD be in quite the seismic week for our man James... www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... #JamesBond #Bond26 #HenryCavill #AaronTaylorJohnson #HarrisDickinson

I love this film and cannot wait to hear this. The movie is so interesting with its tone, going from offbeat comedy and camp to horrifying, sometimes within the same scene. It also has one of the funniest hidden dubbed background performances in the moment an ice swan is defaced (“Not my swan!”)!

What is the coolest shot in movies? #filmsky

The Breakfast Club was released across the USA, 40 years ago today. I would love to own the music where Bender makes a joke as he climbs through the ceiling. Baritone sax & drum machines sound so cool together. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFfP...

Trailer for my upcoming documentary "The Untold Story of No Retreat No Surrender"! Been in the works for the past 8 months, shot some great interviews already. The Kickstarter is now live. If you grew up with this 80s classic check out it! kck.st/4hOD7LT www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHqf...

Elmer Bernstein's adaptation of Bernard Herrmann's Cape Fear music is probably my favourite recreation of original score music heard in a movie. It sounds identical to the Herrmann original & it's hard to be aware of what's been altered and updated. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjwG...

Film composer Jerry Goldsmith was born on this day, 1929. I miss his work dearly. One of my favourite of his cues. It has everything: lush orchestra, military drumming, drum machines, synth glissando, cartoon sound effects & changes tone at least 5 times. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GncB...

Lots of Birthday tributes to John Williams on my feed, with links to favourite tunes. I'll add a few more. Williams doing a haunting, atonal sounding psychological horror score. The film is perfectly spotted and scored too. One of my absolute favourites. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Juzx...

The production design of the new Fantastic Four movie looks so perfectly '60s retro-futurist, I sort of hope they reuse it for a live action Jetsons movie.

If you’ve not seen Anora then check it out. It’s got a lot to say and is tonally unpredictable. Try your best to catch it in a cinema.

Until I watched this I had no idea there was so much history to the Jurassic Park games.

I love the ethereal appearance of fire in films photographed by Stephen Goldblatt. The Hunger (1983) Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) Batman Forever (1995)

This should be mandatory viewing in schools. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQiQ...

David Lynch didn't just give us hugely influential, strongly idiosyncratic films, but I know few filmmakers who haven't spent as much time discussing his movies and TV as they have watching them.

Sad to hear of the passing of director Jeannot Szwarc. Probably his most loved films were Jaws 2 & Somewhere In Time. For many of my age we grew up on the 2 Salkind productions, Supergirl & Santa Claus The Movie. He brought an innocence & romance to big special effects movies.

Many very excited messages received from friends about this release today. I've always loved this score and how it sounds, especially the gun barrel. It was also the last full James Bond music score recorded at CTS Studios in Wembley. This will never have sounded better!

Over 30 years since the film was released, I never thought this score would see the light of day, especially not as a must-buy, fully expanded @lalalandrecords.bsky.social release! The sample cues sound amazing, both synth and orchestral! lalalandrecords.com/beverly-hill...

Tony Slattery walking the empty Gotham City set at Pinewood Studios. www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_O6...

He was many things to the comedy & improv world but it was ITV's SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES and a now extinct cinema strand we need back that Tony Slattery reminds this movie kid of the most. #RIPTonySlattery

When you see the Catwoman costume in real life it’s incomprehensible that it’s the same outfit from Batman Returns. The silicon finish added before shooting created extreme movie magic.

You can’t really comprehend the thick texture in Van Gogh’s work until it’s right in front of you. Often his paintings look as good side on as they do from the front.

Sad to hear of the passing of the great cinematographer Roger Pratt. Between just Brazil and Batman alone, he burned into a generation a wealth of taste defining visuals. Beyond that he had a huge body of memorable, versatile work across many genres. britishcinematographer.co.uk/remembering-...

A lovely, honest, detailed and insightful tribute to a Bond creative, fan and pal who left this world far, far too soon... Nice work Matthew Field and @mi6hq.bsky.social www.mi6-hq.com/sections/art... #AlanChurch #JamesBond #movietitles

Daniel Clamp and Bruce Wayne seemed to get their computer hardware made by the same designer.

My next video, this time on one of the greatest films ever made! Gremlins 2! www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHuF... Find out how Gizmo appeared to walk, among many other things. Huge thanks to @oliverharper.bsky.social @themanfrowns.bsky.social @sceclements-writer.bsky.social & @nsbulk.bsky.social

Stalker (1979) Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky The Keep (1983) Directed by Michael Mann

For the end of my Gremlins video, I refer to the "horror aspirations of its writer". When I wrote that earlier in the year, I thought how is it relevant in any way to 2024? This is a great interview with Nosferatu director Robert Eggers & co-producer Chris Columbus. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmpB...

Nosferatu is both an effective horror film and a great mood piece about repression & morality. Great performances & Willem Dafoe does justice to a role that Peter Cushing would have played 50 years ago. From memory it also has a neat Texas Switch, which I suspect will be a talking point around here.
