I read We Stand On Guard 8 years ago and thought what a great commentary on the perverse logic of the GWOT. I never imagined it was predicting the future. This timeline sucks. imagecomics.com/comics/relea...

Woke up mad! So I folded the laundry, did the dishes, and added more helpful links to my gregpak.link old school directory page. Check it out!

POV: You are every European country east of the Oder-Neisse line

Random thought of the day- we're not in the future late '90s speculative fiction imagined for the US, but we kind of are in the future late '80s speculative fiction imagined. Am I overgeneralizing?

Been thinking about the @nkjemisin.bsky.social story Emergency Skin a lot lately. Very much worth a reread and not only because it's a middle finger to Musk et al. www.amazon.com/Emergency-Sk...

making the educated bourgeois class and the CIA and the FBI and the military mad at you within a month of seizing power is certainly a choice that the Musk/Trump junta is making

www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state... This is by far the best, clearest and most realistic analysis of what we're in for that I've seen.

i think what's particularly demoralizing is that there is just no courage or principles behind the words of republicans who style themselves as serious conservative national security and constitutional thinkers, absolutely zero. its not surprising but my GOD these people are pathetic

I don’t think I really believe in the existence of stable exogenous public opinion any more and have a lot of doubts about the utility of trying to measure and target it rather than actively shaping it in the direction you want to go through organization and charismatic leadership.

Holy Shit

Exactly 100 years ago, F. Scott Fitzgerald saw it coming: "They were careless people...they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

We gotcher Muskovites here (what’s it called when you coin something simultaneously with others?). We have more and going to update. Send us more names.

🥳public goods🥳

from Meditations in an Emergency, my new newsletter, day three: But I do not believe the people of this country will submit to the destruction and the attempts at dictatorship. We are not submitting now. meditations-in-an-emergency.ghost.io/we-are-not-w...

Okay, so joy as resistance has been completely removed from its original context, and that’s why what you know of now doesn’t really work. In the Roaring 20s, during the Harlem Renaissance, Zora Neale Hurston found herself at odds not only with conservative whites but also neo-abolitionists

Probably going to be staring into the abyss a lot for the next few years. Nicer to stare at the cool cloud of the day. Cloud Appreciation Society search.app/JhLzFFn5Z9pw...

This would be an unlawful seizure of territory in violation of the United Nations Charter, and the forcible transfer of the population of Gaza would constitute crimes against humanity. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

This thread will be stories of how people hold the line--continue to behave responsibly and ethically.

Historian and writer Ada Palmer is always good for perspective and inspiration. Like this piece on Resistance when the Tyrant is in Power. www.exurbe.com/6014-2/ #resist

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines. The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds. It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

A great post.

As things get worse, we are going to get progressively more angrily frustrated at our inability to reach and hurt the people making things worse and that’s going to increase the urge to attack anyone we *can* reach, indiscriminately We really, really need to not give in to that urge

So let me get this straight: Trump is trying to fire 5000 FBI agents while Musk's team of nine 20-something dorks has seized access to OMB and the Treasury. Um, Democrats, grab 100 of those about to be fired FBI agents and arrest those dorks! Get them out of there! They can't even fight!

1/3 #thread Elon Musk has no legal basis for the de facto coup he is carrying out now and the opposition must act and be seen to be acting! This is (1) an economic crisis due to freezing so much money, (2) a national security crisis as Elon's group of randos access and exfiltrate

This. @wyden.senate.gov @warren.senate.gov 👇

Please, everyone, drop what you’re doing and read this:

Go. To. The. Treasury. And. Demand. Entry. You are the ranking member on the Senate Finance Committee.

Like … is not one democratic lawmaker willing to go enter a building and demand illegal activity stop? Even if they get arrested? Especially if they get arrested?

Dems can’t win by some parliamentary trick. Repubs have majorities in the House, Senate and SCOTUS. But they can embarrass the governing party, turn the public against them. Simple messages: The president is violating the Constitution. Planes are getting less safe and your hospital will go bankrupt.

thank you for asking! if I ran Chuck Schumer's account, I wouldn't say anything unless it contained one of the following: 1. details about how Chuck Schumer is helping 2. details about something the person reading the post could be doing 3. any other kind of helpful information at all

What I should have done in the beginning - here's a starter pack of 20-odd experts who journalists or others might want to read/talk to to understand the gutting of the administrative state (as opposed to broad decline of democracy etc). I've focused on academics go.bsky.app/MaC7vnv

Honest suggestion for @thedemocraticparty.bsky.social #dncchair meeting - tear up the agenda tomorrow. Don't cancel the vote but hold a press conference on the shit that's going down. Don't wait on Jeffries and Schumer. The media isn't going to cover it until someone treats it like an emergency.

Okay, this is pretty great. I didn’t realize how much friction it was to look up each phone number until this app had them ready to go, one after another. Plus it tells you how many other people used the app to call about the issue (14,700 on the federal funding freeze alone!)
