Can I swear upon Bridson & Haefliger when taking my citizenship oath?

Ontario elections results: Conservatives 43%, Liberals 30%, NDP 18%. As in many other places, if the left united they could win 🫣😫

1971: war on drugs 2001: war on terror 2025: war on REUs?

Student: are calculators allowed on the midterm? Me:

Someone mistook me for thr TA, that’s a win in my book!

Student email: "Hi Dr. Bagley, I've been feeling sick the past few days, so I'm not going to make it to class today. I'm sorry I've missed a few classes now and I'm starting to fall behind. Do you have any recommendations for how to stay on track? Thank you, [student]" Me: Yes I do: come to class 💖

This paper contains coarse language, it’s not suitable for kids

My friend @mathyadriana.bsky.social lost her job last week, and I want you to know the story: buttondown.com/yarntheory/a...

Btw New York public library is a beautiful place: there are free puzzles for anyone to do, and random ppl of all sorts go there and complete a piece of the puzzle.

Dear NSF, as you fired 168 people without any good reason, when it was clear YOU - not just the government - could have made a choice, I will NOT participate in any grant review activities. Kisses

“The agency didn’t have to fire its experts but decided to in the interest of fairness” This is a definition of fairness I had never heard before 🤡

NEW: The National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning. They include people who had already cleared their one-year probationary period only to have it changed to two years earlier this month. @kimzetter.bsky.social reports for @wired.com www.wired.com/story/nation...

One of the tests to tell whether a politician is trustworthy is it’s whether they claim they can bring down prices. Clearly, no one can. Unfortunately politicians of *all* colors are campaigning on that. 😪

Funny to keep track of the Ontario election candidates knocking at our door: the first was the NDP (left wing), today the conservatives, while the liberals (center left) are still nowhere to be seen.

Most people in the US have no idea about the attacks on federally funded science or our government institutions. Many (or most!) of your family, coworkers, neighbors, and friends have no idea. My own MAGA dad thinks DOGE is just identifying waste, and that nothing has been cut. We have to tell them.

Roses are red, violets are blue, the alternate sum of reciprocals equals log(2)

Canada: everyone “does their best”, “tries their best”, “sees what they can do” and in the end no one does anything to help you

Roses are red, Violets are blue, Balls are weakly compact by Banach-Alaoglu

Roses are red, Violets are blue, x plus its inverse is bigger than 2

So, the current US administration is claiming that a conference on “Complex Hyperbolic Geometry” or “Four Manifolds and Categorification” is advancing neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda.

Last night I found out that the NSF math postdoctoral fellowship I applied for is being deleted because it does not comply with Trump’s executive orders on DEI in the federal government. I’m going to answer some FAQs and share some thoughts about this ordeal in this thread 1/n

So I found the answer to HOW MUCH THE CSU IS PAYING for "AI tools" "at no cost to students or faculty" to be an "AI powered university." @cfaunited.bsky.social: help! 🚨$16.9 million In the middle of a "budget crisis" where the CSU is doing layoffs pleading poverty! edsource.org/2025/cal-sta...

A message to our southern neighbors.

Reminder that Aaron Swartz was facing 35 years in prison and financial devastation for trying to programmatically download and open the contents of JSTOR, which led to him taking his own life. But OpenAI is going to scrape all of academia and make billions by plagiarizing it.

I’m in the process of publishing a book with what should be a reputable publisher and guess what? They ask for authorization to sell our data to some AI company for training. This is absolutely a disgrace. Has this become commonplace?

Do you have a comic or tragic scene from academia you’d like to share? You can now contribute to the Academic Scenes project by adding your scene! sites.google.com/view/academi... sites.google.com/view/academi...

Of all the questionable leftovers that remind me of the 90s, the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search is one of the most unlikely.

The last week of October is the scariest time of the year, when your nightmares come true as daylight savings time ends in Europe on Oct 27 and in North America on Nov 3

Opinion poll: do you think paying Article Processing Charges with your grant to make your paper open access is a good thing, or would it be better to use your grant otherwise?

Fun fact: even if you win a Nobel prize, people will question whether it’s deserved. So I guess you can’t win just live your life lol

Thanks for your contributions! Running on Sunday!

Question for math people: does your department offer Mathematica licenses for the faculty?

EVERY time I trust what my coauthors write without *painfully* checking *every* detail I then regret it… trusting a machine to do it is the ultimate folly

Cornell students allege yesterday was the “first [known] time a U.S. university has enacted deportation powers against a student” over Palestine organizing, effectively deporting grad student Momodou Taal, over a protest of defense contractors at a job fair last week h/t @leximcmenamin.bsky.social

The new website for the Academic Scenes project is up! sites.google.com/view/academi... If you’re interested in playing Mathopoly - A play on academic dystopia - at your conference or department let me know!

Wow!!!

I’m happy to present: “Mathopoly - a play on academic dystopia”! A play to think, discuss and laugh about our community. Thanks to the creative genius of Annette Karrer, together with Christian Gorski and Indira Lara Chatterji, and many other contributors! chatterj.perso.math.cnrs.fr/Acad.html
