This really got me on this Sunday morning. Special Vermont Resistance edition open.substack.com/pub/billmcki...

The question now - again. Will anyone in the GOP stand for a democracy against a totalitarian aggressor? At home or abroad? So far, ummmm... not so much.

In a new report, Massachusetts' Commission on Unlocking Housing Production is calling for a ban on single-family zoning, no more parking minimums and reduced lot size requirements, among other ideas to address the state's housing shortage.

One plus of the current unraveling of just about everything: A realization of how many brilliant, outstanding journalists are out there there, slugging it out on their own or still in the trenches for legacy media orgs (many of whose editorial boards and opinionators long ago gave up the ghost).

The problem with having seen for so long the power of government to solve problems is discovering how quickly dismantling it can create them.

I'll be working to make sure those who don't respect the value of all of their customers, partners and employees don't get my business. #offtarget www.cnbc.com/2025/01/24/t...

Data from climate sensors in Boston show some residents battled dangerously hot temperatures days before official warnings were sent out.

The expected impacts of Trump EO on nonprofits cc @gordonjayfrost.bsky.social @tonymart.bsky.social @rustystahl.bsky.social

Just saved a bunch of time by deleting all the newsletters I get that talk about what "Trump might do." Felt sort of like reading about the kind of car that might hit you as you stare at its hood ornament.

Remember… if you miss your email newsletters or social streams for a day or two in the new administration… any “hot take” more than 45 minutes old is totally outdated. Important timesaver!

Sitting down to dig into 2025 while feeling like it's the year used to denote "the future" in some (often dystopian) science fiction movie from the 1980s.

Wishing a Happy Boxing Day to all those who try to explain to me each year of what Boxing Day is.

Feel I like I need to find an extra shocked face under the tree and an eyeroll extender to handle what 2025 will bring. And that’s just for the stuff that doesn’t actually shock/horrify/scare the bejeezus out of me. (Also need: new bejeezus.)

Taking a break from… all of it.

So proud of my dog for being way ahead of the curve on this. We have Lamby, Little Lamby, Christmas Lamby and Rainbow Lamby... and I swear she has situational awareness on when she breaks each one out. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/04/b...

Proud to be part of the @bostonfdn.bsky.social team working to make homeownership more accessible and affordable for hundreds of families in Mass. who deserve opportunities to buy homes and build equity and wealth.

I do miss Nuzzel. www.niemanlab.org/2024/11/reme...

Pretty proud of my colleagues at @bostonfdn.bsky.social, our partners at a number of nonprofits and the folks at Emvision (and maybe a little of my own work) capturing the work we do across so many important pathways to equity - in videos that premiered alongside our Annual Report. tbf.org/2024.

There are just so many bills in the U.S. House right now that are mind blowingly hate-filled. But I haven’t heard of any that help with the price of eggs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great to host Mass. Taxpayers Fdn at TBF yesterday for the release of this new report - and great to see the Boston Business Journal highlight its important, common sense findings. We need to invest in our child care sector. www.bizjournals.com/boston/news/...

Scary if true. Also… true. The power in this bill is not to stop funding of terror-linked groups. It’s to stop nonprofits. open.substack.com/pub/protectd...

Sunday morning talk shows are an excellent way to throw cold water on any level of weekend relaxation.

This week on this platform is the most positive social media scrolling experience I have had since about 2010. Especially considering some of the posts are about cabinet appointments.

For those unsure about pulling the plug on Twitter. Spend ten minutes here (or on almost any other network). Check your pulse and general well-being. Then go there. Check again. If a place makes you feel like your head is going to explode without any benefit... the cure is to stop going there.

@buitengebieden.bsky.social Thanks for coming over! Now I can pull the plug on X with no regrets.

Taking in the sobering details of Greater Boston housing affordability, including case studies of towns using money earmarked for affordable housing to buy land and block that housing. Great work from Boston Indicators and the BU Institute on Cities. www.tbf.org/news-and-ins...

Doing the NYT spelling bee today - I discovered a word that should exist. Adhor. ad・hor (verb): To love and hate something in equal parts. "I adhor reading all my newsletters and feeds with really smart people telling me how screwed we are."

The “sweeping mandate from the people” election winner is now down to 50.4% of the popular vote according to latest figures. Contest the narrative. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Hoping everyone took proper advantage of their extra hour of existential dread this morning.

Yep, it's an "I just downed a Pepcid with a swig of eight-hour-old coffee" kind of day.

Time to start the "#MLB Commissioner Manfred announcing his departure to distract from GodawfulNewUniform-Gate" conspiracy theory.

New MBTA slogan: The T: You can’t have it both ways.

Looking forward to the end of the crazy fall season at TBF, but pleased to share our Annual Report - some nice antidotes to the challenges of the news du jour - or really any jour in the past year. tbf.org/2023
