The fact that this communication is now necessary ... for conferences happening in the *US* ... shocking.

Trump: "Polen hätte Nazi-Deutschland 1939 nicht überfallen sollen"

Does smartphone use make people feel lonelier? Or does loneliness predict smartphone use? We combined experience sampling data with smartphone usage data to examine the bidirectional association between well-being and smartphone use over time. Published in @apajournals.bsky.social Emotion! 🧵 👇

This fall: The doctoral workshop of the Division Media Psych | German National Assocation of Psychology @mepsy.bsky.social Feedback from peers and mentors (tba), tipps and the #pizzaoven story. Looking forward to this event chaired by @germanneubaum.bsky.social and me

Science is under a wide-ranging attack in the U.S. From arbitrary and catastrophic funding cuts to censorship based on keywords, scholarship is no longer free from government interference. How can scientists respond? 1/n

PSA: I am available to review for your diamond open access journal (especially if it implements open review + mandates open everything). I am most likely not available to review for your elsevier and friends journal.

Since Sundays are for revisiting rabbit hole excavation sites 🐰—anyone got insights, experiences, or must-read papers on LLM data simulation and prompt engineering? I’m all ears! 👂 #LLM #academicsky

In case you ever felt the need to obtain a p value from a confidence interval: www.bmj.com/content/343/... And in case you're wondering: I just used this on a manuscript and of course it came out at something like p = .038, lol.

This looks like such a great event on #openscience and #theory! Full programme available here: drive.google.com/file/d/1GvGh...

I hope scholars in Europe and political parties that support science are paying close attention to the unfolding US situation. Institutions can easily come under pressure. Actions of individuals can have far reaching consequences. Robust resilience is hard once the attack happens.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS - Replication Research It is time to gather your replication/reproduction results! Submit them to be part of the Replication Showcase at the R2 symposium in Münster: t1p.de/r2submit - Replications - Reproductions - Multiverse analyses - Many-analyst studies - Method discussions

Pretty excited about this one. For several years, @jmp-hogrefe.bsky.social has partnered with @mepsy.bsky.social on various conference programs, from debate panels and open science competitions to special collections directly in the journal. We'd love to see your submissions, folks! See in you DE.

Quite the marmalade-dropper, this: 3 weeks before Germany's election, Angela Merkel has issued a statement criticising her own party for enabling ("with open eyes") a majority with the AfD. Effectively accuses Merz of breaking his pledge not to do so. www.buero-bundeskanzlerin-ad.de/erklaerungen...

Go, shorty: New blog post! (How) should you interpret pre-post differences in a randomized study? In which we introduce a new format, "reviewer notes" -- points that occasionally need to be made during the peer-review process. www.the100.ci/2025/01/22/r...

Twitter was a cornerstone of my academic life—connecting with brilliant scholars and learning so much through insightful posts. But since Musk took over, things went downhill. Esp. as a German, I cannot support a polemic, crazy, extreme-right politician. Deactivated my account. #Xit #LeavingX

Hello Bluesky :) we are the media use and media effects division #RezFo of the German Communication Association #DGPuK & just joined Bluesky. We have a list with #RezFo researchers that you can add to your feed to follow updates. Let us know if you want to be added. (bsky.app/profile/did:...).

Strong contender for best abstract ever.

The tech industry titans have been remarkably silent on Trump's latest withdrawal from the Paris agreement. Eight years ago, they were outspoken. What changed?

Wow. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde fearlessly calls out Trump and Vance to their faces. This is heroic. (posting in 3 parts due to Bluesky's 1 minute limit)

TIL

Sartre nails it. This is exactly what it's like dealing with Musk apologists.

Zuckerberg is gonna throw three sig heils now, just to prove he has masculine energy.

Also for the international crowd: #Instagram censors “Democrat” as a search term, while allowing “Republican” and seems to prioritize anti-leftwing content in search queries for alternative search terms. #DSA

Helpful!

Reread @lennertcoenen.bsky.social's great paper "lost in a maze". Major takeaway: Hedges ("media effects occur only given a, b, c") should not be considered theoretical progress per se, but rather as part of a protective belt around the field's core hypothesis "Media effects exist".
