A pathetic and humiliating walkback from the would-be destroyers of CFPB, who know they've lost in court and can't kill the agency. This email from Mark Paoletta went to employees today. It neglects Vought's Feb 10 "stop-work" email that superseded it, ending all activity with no exceptions.

Via Anna Bower: The #Trump administration has laid off the entire 18F office, a digital services unit within the General Services Administration, per email shared with me. “This decision was made with explicit direction from the top levels of leadership within both the Administration and GSA,” […]

18F, the federal government’s technology shop, was demolished by Musk’s team shortly after midnight. It was a cost-recoverable org, charging agencies for their expertise, using a consulting model. Its cost to government was negligible, its benefits huge. My team there once saved DoD $500 billion.

Bed time for me. Sending good wishes to the people of Ukraine who have bravely fought for their land and their freedom against Russian invaders. #SlavaUkraini 🇺🇦

Just a reminder that Trump’s DOJ just dropped a criminal fraud investigation into Ogles, including allegations that he used a photo of his stillborn child to raise tens of thousands of dollars for a burial garden for children that was never built. He has never accounted for that money.

I'm trying to put together a list of the many debunkings of DOGE's claims of savings. Email these to your Republican Members of Congress, who still credulously claim DOGE is finding things. Let me know what I'm missing. www.emptywheel.net/portfolio-it...

I'm hearing a lot of talk about what Medicaid cuts will mean for rural hospitals but far less about what they will mean for cities. Both will be hit hard but some cities like Baltimore will be hit worse. This article has a great map of the percentage of Medicaid coverage in every county in the […]

Via Joyce Vance: At what point do leaders in the GOP band together (since they seem to lack courage individually) & say enough is enough? The party of Reagan becomes the tool of Putin if they don’t, especially after last night. ‪Jacob Silverman‬: NEW — 19-year-old DOGE engineer Edward […]

The story about Trump being a KGB asset with the codename Krasnov briefly appeared and then disappeared yesterday. It was on the Daily Beast and then was withdrawn without comment or correction. A Google News search doesn't show it in any US newspapers with the exception of the tiny Falls […]

Here we go: The Acting Solicitor General has asked #SCOTUS to immediately freeze (and vacate) the district court order that had temporarily reinstated Hampton Dellinger atop DOJ’s Office of Special Counsel: utexas.box.com/s/h0m91y7nes... I’ll have *much* more on this in tomorrow’s “One First.”

## HHS employees, DO NOT OPEN YOUR EMAIL HHS employees, DO NOT OPEN YOUR EMAIL. Not without reading this first. They’re going to cut off your network access as soon as you read your email, so you need to download a bunch of things first. Details at the link […] [Original post on solarbird.net]

#WhitehouseWash My change-detection just caught something big: dei.gov got registered around one week ago - for some days it was empty. Than a long list appeared, which quickly got password-protected; see screenshots. #DEI

If you're in the mood for a bit of agit prop, here's one thing you can do: 1. Google Gulf of Mexico 2. “Gulf of America" is the top 3. Click on the three little dots to the right of it 4. Select "Send Feedback" 5. Click on "Gulf Of America" 6. Select "Inaccurate content" 7. Select "Incorrect" […]

Via Angry Staffer: #Jordan is one of our most important allies and #Trump is threatening to withhold aid from them if they have a problem with us kicking an entire population out of their home so the US can occupy it. No new wars, though, huh? I’m sure Iran won’t have an issue with this plan.

CNBC - President Trump is to sign an executive order today directing the DoJ to pause enforcing a nearly half-century-old law that prohibits American companies and foreign firms from bribing officials of foreign governments […]

One of the greats. RIP.

Again, when Carl Nichols asked DOJ for proof of the claims of fraud right wingers are making, DOJ had none. www.emptywheel.net/2025/02/08/t...

@PamelaBarroway NJ joined this suit. Apologies if I'm mixing up cases! https://wpadmin-prd.njoag.gov/new-jersey-joins-22-states-in-suing-to-stop-trump-administration-from-withholding-essential-federal-funding/

"Thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Hannah Arendt warned us that the point of this deluge is not to persuade, but to overwhelm and paralyze our capacity to act. More recently, researchers have found that the viral outrage disseminated on social media in response to these ridiculous claims […]

The people who voted for Trump because they thought he’d pull the U.S. back from foreign entanglements and overseas adventurism are really among the prime suckers of our era.

Legal Beavers: I've been wondering if Congress members went to USAID today expecting to be denied entry so that they could in fact file a complaint that members of Congress with security clearance were denied entry. Any merit to this speculation. IANAL so this could be wildly off-base.

“Trump is so stupid. He doesn’t know how tariffs work!” Yes, he does. Trump knows full well that American consumers are who pays tariffs. But, here’s the thing. He knows most people *don’t* know how they work. Why would he push them? Because a long time conservative goal is to end the income […]

71% of US crude comes from Canada and Mexico (60% from Canada alone). Get ready for pain at the pump. What a stupid self-inflicted wound https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/pump-prices-set-rise-trump-tariffs-hit-canadian-mexican-oil-2025-02-01/
