How the new Ofsted report cards could be improved- by giving parents what they want to know (& strengthening local professional accountability in the process) theconversation.com/how-new-ofst...

OK, we did have some fun as well - jazz, beers & cockatoos at #icsei2025 @lizrobinson.bsky.social @jamespope.bsky.social @billlucas.bsky.social

School leadership landscape, but not as we know it - fantastic pop-up event in Melbourne, with Andy Hargreaves, Tony Mackay, Deb Netolicky, Pat Thomson & me. Covered everything from Cheshire Cats, to reshaping the narrative, to kelp, class & populism @patthomson.bsky.social @ahargreaves.bsky.social

Researching Sustainable School Leadership (ReSSLe) team - Pat Thomson, Tom Perry, Mike Collins & me - presenting at #icsei2025 in Melbourne today. Some great questions & discussion, thanks to all who came! @patthomson.bsky.social @twperry1.bsky.social

This from Gert Biesta's excellent keynote @ #icsei2025 - 3 domains of purpose for edn (qualification, socialisation & subjectification) must be held in creative balance. The point of ed is only what cannot be done without edn. Teachers can redirect students to pay attention - developing discernment

Martin highlights important associations between teacher support, teacher-student relationships, perseverance, curiosity & belonging etc & academic outcomes. Argues that education can't be 'delivered' - needs to be a process of development. #icsei2025

Martin Westwell - a great Wigan export, now CEO of South Aus school system (having been very successful prof of learning sciences) talking through purpose and principles for system reform - inc tight but loose framework. #icsei2025 @martinwestwell.bsky.social

The ReSSLe (Researching Sustainable School Leadership) team tour is coming together! @twperry1.bsky.social & me in Melbourne ready for #icsei25 conference starting tomorrow. @patthomson.bsky.social & Mike Collins also in town!

Dr Tracy Burns - while many global megatrends are shaping education, inc emergence of new tech during current children's lives (see pic), many core things haven't changed (love, friendship, community etc) #researchconf25

Why we need to stop talking about 21st Century Skills - & an amazing book from 1898 advocating for grit & adaptability (as well as princely manhood!) #researchconf25 #billlucas

Bill Lucas asks 'Are we nearly there yet?' in terms of unleashing HI (human intelligence) across curriculum, pedagogy & assessment. #expansiveeducation @uniofnottingham.bsky.social

David Hopkins talking about Unleashing Greatness - the origins & future for school improvement at ACER's #researchconf25

Geoff Masters of ACER quoting Geoff Barton in Melbourne - GCSE closed norm referencing model ensures a third of students must always 'fail'. @realgeoffbarton.bsky.social

Great to be here in Melbourne for the ACER #researchconference25 - I'll be talking about leading complex change across local schooling systems. Much warmer than Nottingham in Feb - and a fantastic view!

Off to Australia - Melbourne & Adelaide - giving workshop at ACER's #ResearchConf25 then #icsei paper, symposium & debate on Sustainable School Leadership w @andyhargreaves.bsky.social Then to @patthomson.bsky.social 's place for writing week w @twperry1.bsky.social & Mike Collins + cuddling koalas!

The Hawk - always my favourite Marianne Faithful song (well, lullaby) youtu.be/p7bOqhmaQao?...

Excellent day at #lgahq - John Edwards from Dfe on RISE, leaders from 9 LocalEd localities sharing learning from the pilots & Susan Cousin & I launched final project evaluation report (Forging Local Coherence). Great to see lots of friends too! Fascinating project! localed2025.org.uk

Why do MAT leaders need to become dancers? Our study found there is not one best way to lead a trust. In case you missed it - I was in London this week launching a new report with @tobygreany.bsky.social on Values-based Leadership and organisational development in Multi Academy Trusts for @wholeeducation.bsky.social wholeeducation.org/a-constant-d... 1/5

As a confessed Dylan geek I so enjoyed this! It's indulgent - doesn't try to really explain his song-writing, just takes you through the story with fantastic performances all round. Chalamets manages to make him both impossible & sympathetic. Recommended! www.theguardian.com/film/2024/de...

Thank you to everyone who joined us today at our #TrustLeadershipConference today! Today's event coincided with the publication of the latest report from @tobygreany.bsky.social and @eleanorbernardes.bsky.social: 'A constant dance'. You can download the full report here: https://buff.ly/3DXMNEH

New podcast! @twperry1.bsky.social & I talking with @naht.org.uk @jameskbowen.bsky.social about our UK Sustainable School Leadership research. Pls do complete the survey - open til late Jan! www.naht.org.uk/News/Latest-...

Private Revolutions by Yuan Yang (now a Labour MP) is excellent - follows the lives of 5 (real & remarkable) young women growing up in modern China. Fascinating how competitive ed system shapes life opportunities, but also the loss of meritocracy over a generation books.google.co.uk/books/about/...

Completing the survey could be just the opportunity you need to reflect on your leadership journey as you think about 2025! Happy New Year to one and all!

Interesting article in #observer on DfE's push to promote more flexible working in schools. Our Sustainable School Leadership research shows 1 in 5 Assistant & Deputy Heads in primary now working part-time / flexible. @twperry1.bsky.social @patthomson.bsky.social sustainableschoolleadership.uk

Get the inside scoop on what politicians actually do about ed policy. This new book by Dr Sheridan Dudley, former Chief of Staff for 🇦🇺 NSW tells all - & she's no slouch on the theory either. www.routledge.com/Politicians-... @agavrielatos.bsky.social @pasisahlberg.bsky.social @icsei.bsky.social

Good morning Manchester! I'm here for a workshop w leaders from 30+ trusts & schools providing/receiving support through the Priority Ed Investment Area in Rochdale, Oldham, Salford & Thameside - seeking to draw out lessons learned before work finishes in March. Followed by PEIA Partnership Board.

On a similar topic, I really enjoyed this from @keziah70.bsky.social www.tes.com/magazine/ana...

I really enjoyed this panel session on #BelongingSchools on Monday - thanks to Jamie's Farm for organising (& for your work). Riley is fab - as are Tish Fielden (from JF) & Tom Shaw from the amazing Carr Manor school in Leeds (read their Ofsted!) @jonnyuttley.bsky.social youtu.be/EfiPjv2Per8?...

Hooray - the Italian edition of School Leadership & Education System Reform is here! Many thanks to Peter Earley, Giovanna Barzano & Giovanni Moreti for seeing it through - sorry I can't come to the launch next week! Chapters by many colleagues at UCL IOE (none of whom seem to be here yet)

I've just finished Peter Hessler's book - Other Rivers - about his time teaching at Sichuan Uni, China through the pandemic. His 2 daughters attended primary school there, so focus is on education. Always fascinating, but darker. I spent 2 years teaching in Wuhan in 90s - so much change since.

What types of leadership development have you found most powerful in your career? Tell us your views in the UK Sustainable School Leadership Survey. Pls RT warwick.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_... @andywolfe.bsky.social @ascl-uk.bsky.social @nahtnews.bsky.social @uofgheadship.bsky.social
