“Let’s be clear, this is not a ‘nice to have’ target...Without protecting #nature, we simply cannot deliver our #climate and development goals.” @briantodonnell.bsky.social @ingerandersen.bsky.social @unep.org @pgreenfielduk.bsky.social @giulianaviglione.bsky.social @yaninequiroz.bsky.social

www.rte.ie/news/regiona.... Kilcormac - one of the communities we're working with - will benefit from some of this €6mill Just Transition Fund - and good to see Linda Kelly and Seamus Barron quoted in the RTÉ piece. Investment in communities and community resilience is integral to just transition.

We've an amazing resource underground in restored and healthy bogs that can store twice as much carbon as trees....but if we don't restore them they're emitters - a 'ticking box' of greenhouse gases. #bogs #tócharstories www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Ireland's bogs (and its landscapes more generally) are oftentimes contested spaces. Notice the quarry to the right in the image of Abbeyleix bog? I photographed it from the sky. What impact is it having on the bog? Plans are afoot to expand the operation👇 www.leinsterexpress.ie/news/busines...

A-Z of Bogs: G is for... Greenhouse gases Perhaps the most well-known fact about bogs is they are a source of carbon when disturbed. This potent greenhouse gas is emitted into the atmosphere and into waterways if the bog is drained. How much do bogs contain? Check out @mapalljohn.bsky.social...

🪶 A great tit working hard on a sunflower seed

A-Z of Bogs: F is for… Fens Fens are a base or alkaline peatland. Bogs are acidic. There would be no raised bogs without fens. Think of it like this: Lake -> Fen - Raised bog Image👇 courtesy of the Irish Peatland Conservation Council

The section exploring climate change at IMMA is fantastic. These photos by Pamela Singh of the Chipko tree hugging movement are so moving - activists who saved their forest by highlighting the interdependence between humans & nature. daily.jstor.org/the-tree-hug...

Witnessed the most amazing murmuration this evening at Lough Ennell,Bloomfield Hotel - really magical. Thousands of starlings moving as one, swirling and shifting like a living cloud making shapes against a beautiful sunset sky. Nature’s own breathtaking ballet. #ireland #natureperfection

Happy World Wetlands Day!! A day to highlight these magical and important wildernesses 💕 These sphagnum mosses like a galaxy of wonder within the bog pools... @scohaboybog.bsky.social @peatlandecr.bsky.social

Dig yourself a pond this bank holiday. It’s what Brigid would have wanted

Sphagnum mosses are tiny creatures, but together they have altered the Earth’s climate, protected permafrost, and thwarted giant wildfires. Act like Sphagnum. Resistance…. Resilience…. Bottom-up defense.

Tomorrow in the Botanic Gardens our #bogs specialist, geographer and bogs blogger, Dr Kate Flood @abogslife.bsky.social takes part in a panel around reimagining Ireland's Bogs - with architect Evelyn D'Arcy and researcher Katie Smirnova #TócharStories www.eventbrite.ie/e/reimaginin...

Shane Hynan is an artist/collaborator with #TócharStories so delighted to see @rha-arts.bsky.social opening this exhibition next week #Bogskin featuring his work and that of other amazing photographers and visual artists who draw inspiration from #bogs. Go visit and tell us what you think?

The bog has always occupied a central role in Irish life, in our folklore, history and home life. We are delighted to present BogSkin, a major exhibition examining the relationship of art to the boglands over the past fifty years, curated by RHA Director, Patrick T. Murphy. 🧵

What a delight this art exhibition is - #BogSkin at RHA from end of January featuring some of the photographers/ artists we've been connecting with about #bogs and #art in Ireland including Shane Hynan & Tina Claffey (its free) @tinaclaffey.bsky.social rhagallery.ie/events/exhib.... #TócharStories

Archaeology of Irish Bogs: Toghers are trackways that were built across bogs, allowing safer access to these wet and difficult to traverse areas. They were constructed from wood, gravel or flagstones and date to 6,000 years ago.
