NEW: updated long-run gap in voting between young men and women in Germany: Gender divide continues to widen, but contrary to what is often assumed, young men continue to vote roughly in line with the overall population, while young women have swung sharply left. www.ft.com/content/29fd...

Happy times 🤍

🚨Paper alert 🚨 Do you wonder about how emotions influence climate-friendly outcomes? @kimdoell.bsky.social and I have analyzed how 8 emotions influence climate beliefs, climate policy support, sharing climate messages, and climate behavior across 63 countries. We found that... 1/

More evidence that a universal basic income would significantly reduce child abuse and neglect. This is a universal payment in NZ to parents with kids under age 1.

New study confirms the presence of #microplastics in the brain, liver and kidneys. The concentration in the 🧠 was 7–30 times higher than in the liver and kidneys! And there was an even higher accumulation of microplastics in the brains of people with #dementia… www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Just wrapped up the last course I’ll teach during my PhD @univie.ac.at, and I couldn't be more grateful for this experience. 🤗 Over the past years, I've been teaching seminars on social neuroscience, and I’ve truly discovered how rewarding it is to teach and engage with bright, curious students. 1/4

Exciting news! Our newest research, led by the amazing @colognaviktoria.bsky.social and @nielsmede.bsky.social looking at trust in scientists and their role in society across 67 countries with over 70,000 participants has just been published! 🚀 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

Interested in group discrimination? We developed a new interactive task to study the effects of personal and group discrimination. RateME is opely available on our Lab's Github and can be implemented on Qualtrics or as an fMRI task. Check out our new study & try it out yourself! ✨️

We are a bit late for this, but happy new year from the SCAN unit! 🎈 We are thankful for the productive and joyful times together and looking forward to another year of exciting research! 🤩 Here is our 2024 in review 👇

Kärnten stimmt gegen Windräder, Weidel will sie alle abreißen...

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️

These days, my thoughts are with all the people in California who are in grave danger because of massive wildfires! But much more than "Thoughts & Prayers" they (and we all) need "Mitigation & Adaption" to address climate change and its most disastrous effects.

If you needed another reason to support measures combating high income inequality… ⬇️ Timely new work shows that higher income and wealth inequality in a country are associated with a higher risk for erosion of democracy. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

With 17 days to go until the US takeover by the new Trump (or Musk?) administration, I thought it might be worthwhile to share a number of recent papers published by our team that counter arguments that have been leveled against misinformation research. 1/n

Public outreach is vital for making science accessible and impactful. As you plan your goals for 2025, consider engaging in more science communication! 😊 Great piece ⬇️

Why we fund basic research

🎁 A little holiday treat 🎁 We have a new paper on climate action communication on #Twitter 🌍 We analyzed over 6.4 million tweets from 2021, including tweets from the general public and tweets from 'climate' scientists on @katharinehayhoe.com's "Scientists who do climate" list🧵 osf.io/preprints/os...

An Onion version of this might read "New York Governor Unwavering In Commitment To Accelerating Class Consciousness"

“It’s a constant tension between the scientifically illiterate and the politically clueless” Scientists don't understand how policy works, and decisionmakers often don't understand the science, and there is agreement that we could and should do better. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I was thinking of creating such a list, thank you, @ohbmenvironment.bsky.social 🤩 Check it out to connect with researchers working at the intersection of climate change and neuroscience 🧠🌱

Brain health is critical but still under-prioritized globally 🧠 Read TheLancetNeuro editorial "United action is needed to prioritise brain health" doi.org/10.1016/S147... Relatedly, climate change poses serious threats to brain health and I feel there isn't enough talk about this.

Antarctica Day is on Dec 1st each year. It marks the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, which sets aside Antarctica as a continent for peace and science. To help celebrate, here’s a photo I took a couple of years ago, of a seal which had clearly got the message about peace. Happy #AntarcticaDay!!

NEW: Why do we always think crime is rising, even when it isn’t? This week I looked at one of the big data mysteries. Britain is 2/3 less violent than the 1990s; thefts were higher pre-lockdown Why, then, doesn’t it feel like it? 1/8 @thetimes.com 🔗 www.thetimes.com/article/b63d...
