My statement on the government’s response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry:

We attended the timely @crisis-uk.bsky.social Homeless Summit yesterday. At a time of extraordinarily high rough sleeping, we were particularly encouraged by consensus from Andy Burnham @mayorofgm.bsky.social and London’s deputy mayor @tomcopley.bsky.social on the need for a housing first approach.

With 1 in 21 children in London now living in temporary accommodation, there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to this crisis. It was good to join the discussion about Wates’ proposal for high quality, safe, warm, modular homes last night, and visit an example.

The Refugee Lodgings Project is a fantastic way for landlords to earn some extra cash while helping in our mission to end rough sleeping. It was great to visit Anna and Ibrahim at home to learn more about the scheme, which is run by Housing Justice. housingjustice.org.uk/blogs/2025/d...

Our director @libpeck.bsky.social joined Eddie Nestor MBE to take calls from BBC Radio London listeners. We talked about: 💡 What the VRU does 💡 Tackling school exclusions 💡 Building back the youth workers sector Listen here: lnkd.in/eDYceQRe

Great to celebrate the completion of these new social rented homes at Barkingside Yard - a partnership between Peabody, Vistry, LB Redbridge and Places for London. www.ilfordrecorder.co.uk/news/2492936...

The Refugee Lodgings Project provides vital support to refugees and helps resident landlords earn some extra income while being part of the solution to end rough sleeping in London. It was lovely to visit Anna and Ibrahim at home to hear about the benefits of the scheme.

It was good to join this week’s New Homes New Ways summit at the Building Centre. I spoke about: 🏚️ 1 in 21 London children living in temporary accommodation. 🏡 Return to social home building under Sadiq Khan’s mayoralty. 🏗️ Working with the new govt to boost home building.

Despite the cold, it was great to be at the topping out ceremony for the tallest building on the Dagenham Green development this morning. This first phase of nearly 1000 homes being delivered by Peabody and Hill includes hundreds of affordable homes funded by the Mayor of @london.gov.uk.

Fascinating, galvanising PM w @streetskitchen.bsky.social, @itsgroundswell.bsky.social with Islington Council, grassroots groups & @tomcopley.bsky.social talking about @london.gov.uk Rough Sleeping Action Plan. (Nice being next to @unionchapeluk.bsky.social too, given chats abt Homeless Taskforce!)

Thanks for organising this @streetskitchen.bsky.social. Good to join the panel to talk about progress on the Mayor of @london.gov.uk’s Rough Sleeping Plan of Action, and hear from those supporting rough sleepers and people with lived experience.

The Cranbrook estate from the canal on a very grey day. 🌧️

Last week I visited Advance Women’s Centre to see the vital work they do supporting survivors of domestic abuse and women leaving prison to rebuild their lives. Last year the Mayor invested £10m in accommodation and support for survivors of domestic abuse. www.londonworld.com/community/de...

As someone who has studied autocratization elsewhere, I can tell you that you need to keep your eyes on THIS. Changes to the partisan balance of bodies overseeing elections or changes to the electoral system is key to how wannabe autocrats become actual autocrats. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/u...

Thank you for @tomcopley.bsky.social for joining @jamesjwalsh.bsky.social in Lewisham and for your, the @london.gov.uk, and the GLA’s continued support in delivering much-needed affordable homes for our community.

This morning I visited some of LB Lewisham’s development sites with @brendadacres.bsky.social @jamesjwalsh.bsky.social, including these brand new council flats on an old garage site. City Hall is supporting the borough with funding from the Mayor of @london.gov.uk’s affordable homes programmes.

Great profile of my colleague, Deputy Mayor for Environment @metecoban92.bsky.social. Green transition should benefit ordinary Londoners, says deputy mayor www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

I was delighted to celebrate the completion of the first of the 98 new social rent homes being built next door to Barkingside station. They’re being delivered in partnership between Vistry, Peabody, Places for London and LB Redbridge with funding from the Mayor of @london.gov.uk.

Last night we celebrated the incredible life of Nicky Gavron at the Guildhall. The venue, turnout and tributes were befitting of someone who achieved so much and gave so much to London. Nicky’s legacy in biscuits was a lovely touch. ❤️

Today the Mayor of @london.gov.uk has announced the biggest ever single increase in core City Hall funding for rough sleepers. This extra £10m will enable us to: - Expand our network of Ending Homeless Hubs - Support 1700 more people a year - Help people before they spend a night on the streets

Good to join the housing panel at @thefabians.bsky.social New Year Conference yesterday to discuss the government’s target to build 1.5m homes, homelessness and renters’ rights amongst other topics.

It’s a beautiful day in London. ❤️😎

The very last motion I proposed as a @londonassembly.bsky.social member back in 2020 was for the GLA to reclaim the Greater London Council’s coat of arms. It didn’t happen then, but I’m delighted an application is now being made to adopt it in time for the GLA’s 30th birthday.

I’m looking forward to joining this panel at tomorrow’s @thefabians.bsky.social New Year conference. I’ll be speaking about how the Government and Mayor of @london.gov.uk can work together to deliver the homes we need.

It’s vital that the social housing sector is put back on a sustainable financial footing after years of underinvestment and uncertainty. This important analysis shows how rent convergence could help unlock substantial investment in new and existing homes. www.insidehousing.co.uk/news/reintro...

This morning Cllr Nasrine Djemai gave me a tour of Central Somers Town where Camden Council are delivering new homes and improvements under their Community Investment Programme. We visited Mary Shelley House - 34 brand new council-built homes for social rent funded by the Mayor of @london.gov.uk.

The Amar Bari, Amar Jibon project team presented the emerging findings from the Dunhill Medical Trust-funded project to @tomcopley.bsky.social, Deputy Mayor of London for Housing & Residential Development, at the BME London Landlords (BMELL) quarterly meeting. www.housinglin.org.uk/News/The-ABA...

Social housing provides security and stability and can transform lives. Yet too often people who live in social housing face stigma based on where they live. Tonight I joined housing association residents in Parliament to discuss this, and how to ensure their voices are heard.

It was good to meet with BME London Landlords this morning to discuss how we can all work together to deliver new homes and improve existing homes.

Great to see Angela Rayner making further improvements to the Renters Rights Bill. This amendment will limit the rent landlords can charge tenants in advance, which will prevent some of the outrageous up front payment demands we have seen in recent years. www.theguardian.com/money/2025/j...

Investment in housing and transport will be at the heart of the new London Growth Plan: “Give us the resources and housing investment we need, and we’ll take the difficult decisions to deliver new housing on a scale not seen for a generation.”

Sleeping rough in freezing temperatures can be life-threatening. I’ve activated the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol in partnership with London Councils to make sure emergency accommodation opens across London. If you see someone sleeping rough, please alert StreetLink: thestreetlink.org.uk
