In Peterborough Cathedral there is a panel explaining that during the Reformation, when soldiers came to smash the monuments, steal the gold and burn the books, a monk managed to save just one book from the library, claiming to the illiterate soldiers that it was a bible that must not be burned.

The otherwise sober and even-keeled Schumpeter mega hates Locke

"designed for business" [it's a health centre?!]

There is a world where "university" is still the winning card.

I keep thinking about how institutions of higher ed are CHOOSING to give students a worse education. I saw an email from a Dean chairing our core curriculum committee where he admitted that data show Humanities majors get good jobs/are generally successful, “but that isn’t what students want.”

I'm sure the book's great too but I LOVE this cover. @uvapress.bsky.social knocking it out of the park!

This (from @janerockhouse.bsky.social's excellent substack) is about Birmingham city council, but frankly it could be any institution in the UK, especially universities. Accountability? Nah. The people responsible for out, and they've all got jolly good pensions too.

I did the same last week: posted my ballot, voted for @ucucommons.bsky.social candidates. Then forgot to post my postbox pic, so here it is!

In entirely other news, I saw a ~500 year old narwhale tusk today (Baddesley Clinton house, quite hidden away in a corner) www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/343036

This eloquent and ethical article by former AHA President Barbara Weinstein is so good and so important.

two things we need to keep getting into the media and shouting at government 1. no-one can cut their way to growth 2. this is sector-wide: it’s not just the survival of specific institutions that is at stake (important tho that is!) but the survival of whole disciplines

"The theme chosen for 2025-26 is the historical relationship between Religion and the State, and the Centre particularly welcomes applications from scholars whose work contributes to broader discussion of the interaction of religious belief with historical writing."

@sethcotlar.bsky.social's review of my 2017 book: "Cutterham depicts the Society of Cincinnati a bit like the Mar-a-Lago of the 1780s, as an institution that aspiring crony capitalists used to pull the professedly neutral levers of political power to protect the interests of their new ruling class."

Many such cases

It was great fun to talk with Josh Redden and @zwhitehistory.bsky.social about the United States in the 1780s! Tune in if you want to hear me call Thomas Jefferson a "unique weirdo," make the case for the analytical role of class struggle, and explain the making of the federal constitution.

CFP: 'Ireland and the American Revolution'. The organisers invite submissions for papers to be presented at a conference held in the Trinity Long Room Hub at Trinity College Dublin on the 9-10 October 2025. If you are interested submit an abstract of 250 words and a brief bio by the 1 May 2025.

'The deep cultural cost of British university job cuts" bit.ly/4gnDCuE An excellent letter, in today's @theguardian.com, by the co-chairs of @artsandhums.bsky.social, a collective of subject specialist organisations representing and advocating for arts & humanities subjects in UK HE. #skystorians

Is this what the kids would call "a baller move"? (I will accept your guesses for whose CV this is...)

Would you kindly...? www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Selfish, illegal parking like this obscures visibility at the junction and puts cyclists and other road users in danger.

Just filled out a "sustainability survey" for my work (in a university) that really wanted to know what the barriers are to me going fully paperless, but didn't ask anything at all about air travel or AI.

If you're in Birmingham on Tuesday, you should definitely come to "Feminist Histories: Care, Loneliness and Embodiment," to hear from an amazing line-up of colleagues! www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/hist...

"As a board member at [redacted] and an early funder of [redacted] I have a significant personal stake in the future of [redacted]. But my stake is more than just financial. I truly believe that..." 🤣

On 4 Feb along with @sarahknott.bsky.social, Anna Jamieson and Karen Harvey, I will be participating in a panel: #Feminist Histories: Care, Loneliness and Embodiment' hosted by BRIHC and Birmingham C18 Centre. Excited for this. Added bonus that it will be hybrid www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/hist...

Genuinely think this will be a highlight of my career. I am so excited to be finally meeting the brilliant Claire Rydell Arcenas and Glory Liu *in person*! 12 Feb, 5-7pm RAI Oxford - drinks to follow. Thanks to @raioxford.bsky.social for adopting us. www.rai.ox.ac.uk/event/roundt...

Extremely relatable content.

What kind of age range is 35-44? Please, I am 30-39!

Quite a day for new book arrivals in the office!

I know the imperial presidency is fully bi-partisan, but "pre-emptive pardons" still seem like something that should be raising more eyebrows.

😬

Nothing gets me limbered up and ready to start the new term quite like a refreshing 150,000 words of marking!
