Blowing dust is returning to El Paso. A plume of dust, thick in places, is advecting out of the typical source areas in northern Chihuahua directly towards El Paso. Visibility is already dropping.

The ALERT California wildfire-detection cams are also useful for spotting meteorological phenomena. Rime is ice that forms on surfaces, such as mountaintop trees, when supercooled water droplets in passing clouds freezes to the surfaces. Here's rime on a tree on Goat Mountain, Mendocino County.

Some tropical trees seem to be adapted to attract lightning- which may thin out spaces surrounding them to give them more room to grow, and (probably most importantly) fries the parasitic vines which are taking a stranglehold on them. www.earth.com/news/some-tr...

Some of these trees may be over 3000 years old! An amazing discovery in East Africa. earthsky.org/earth/new-tr...

Are you a basketball fan? The NBA partners with Rwanda, and promotes African basketball thru Rwanda. But Rwanda's government is promoting the latest chapter in a huge, long war in Central Africa. This song was written by two Levelland musicians about spring in the South Plains. But it works for El Paso too, especially this last month."I looked in all directions but she's nowhere to be found, now there's more dirt in the air than there is down on the ground..." www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZo7...

Lots of dust blowing across El Paso/Ciudad Juárez yesterday. Looks like it's coming at least partly from dry lake beds. Sentinel 2 SR.

A rare regional air quality event occurred in the US Great Plains on Friday 14 Mar: huge dust storm & smoke from fast-growing wildfires caused daily PM2.5 to exceed the US health standard across OK, northern TX & southeastern KS (red/orange dots & shading). @noaa.gov @noaacomms.noaa.gov

Aerosol detection product (ADP) from the ABI sensor on @noaa.gov GOES-East satellite highlighted the deadly dust storm (yellow) moving across Texas, Oklahoma & Kansas and smoke (lavender) from fast-growing wildfires in Oklahoma on Friday afternoon 14 Mar. @noaacomms.noaa.gov @sangasso.bsky.social

An enormous dust storm moved across Great Plains overnight & is currently at the MS River Valley. Stunning @noaa.gov GOES-East dust RGB imagery shows blowing dust as bright magenta pink, here moving through TX, OK, KS & MO in early AM today Mar 19. @noaacomms.noaa.gov @tomgillpredicts.bsky.social

Yesterday afternoon 18 Mar, aerosol detection (ADP) from the ABI sensor on @noaa.gov GOES-East observed the start of the current huge dust storm (yellow) in southern NM & the Chihuahua Desert of Mexico, plus smoke from a wildfire (lavender). @tomgillpredicts.bsky.social @sangasso.bsky.social

New hybrid TEMPO & GOES-East ABI aerosol detection product from @noaa.gov highlights the start of blowing dust yesterday Mar 18 in NM & Chihuahua Mexico. Also detected was a separate dust plume in CO/KS and smoke from a wildfire in Mexico. @avoiland.bsky.social @aaronnagler.bsky.social

Very preliminary and likely not accurate (not certified or fully QAed) hourly PM2.5 concentration readings at TCEQ monitoring stations in the El Paso area this afternoon have maxed out at about 800 micrograms per cubic meter. Socorro 821, Ascarate Park 796, Chamizal 791. #txwx

🛰️ In fact , the latest GOES image shows #dust activity picking and a sizable dust cloud developed . My previous posting showed the local morning image which is high resolution (MODIS) and takes a bit longer to be made available. @aerosolwatch.bsky.social @tomgillpredicts.bsky.social

Blowing dust storm in the Mesilla Valley. Maybe 0.25 mile visibility. #DustBowl2025

GOES view of Chihuahuan Desert borderlands at 5:06 PM local time. Pretty much all possible dust sources are emitting- Lordsburg Playa puffing away quite viewable on satellite- even some areas I don't remember seeing emit dust before from satellite perspecive such as Tularosa Basin N of White Sands
