This point can’t be repeated often enough - the Trump administration is animated by vile, idiotic internet conspiracy theories.

NEW: More than a dozen high-ranking executive branch officials and congressional aides made well-timed trades since Trump took office, most of them selling stock before the market plunged amid fears that Trump’s tariffs would set off a global trade war.

Nothing says “I don’t hate migrants” quite like accusing them of eating dogs and cats

NEW: Two Jan. 6 defendants - including a man convicted of assaulting police - scored a White House tour on Sunday. They said they were invited by an administration official, whom they declined to name. Both also have criminal records aside from Jan. 6. www.npr.org/2025/05/21/n...

NEW: In @justsecurity.org, I assess the FBI's controversial new "nihilistic violent extremism" (NVE) framework. It's a worthwhile step forward — as long as it does not discount white supremacist violence, which remains America's gravest terrorist threat. www.justsecurity.org/113463/nihil...

The #FBI is investigating a new threat: nihilistic violent extremism (NVE). @jacobware.bsky.social on the importance of the term, and why law enforcement agencies can't ignore the persistent threat of white supremacists and anti-government extremists. www.justsecurity.org/113463/nihil...

Great reminder that Andry Romero & others were deprived of due process - a basic constitutional right. The Trump admin imprisoned Romero in a foreign hellhole with no due process. He has been convicted of no crime. There’s no evidence he is a gang member. He just wanted people to look fabulous.

Habba: "We could turn New Jersey red. ... hopefully, while I'm there, I can help that cause." I discuss the implications for Ms. Habba's indictment of Congresswoman McIver (D-NJ) Listen for yourself to the interim US Attorney's words. youtu.be/Me3phQz0wME?...

We know Patel’s playbook from his time on House Intel: 1. Distort and cherry-pick from FBI source docs. 2. Have House Rs amplify those distortions. 3. Feed the narrative to credulous rightwing propaganda/conspiracy sites like The Federalist, etc. All to scapegoat the FBI for Jan. 6.

MAGA’s monocultural attack on the American multiculture has led to guys like this being placed in positions of authority:

NEW: Four Trump officials once too extreme to be confirmed—or keep their job—are back. One attacked women’s right to vote. One spoke at an event with White nationalists. Another called Obama a Muslim & said his CIA chief should be executed or a “prison bitch. www.cnn.com/2025/05/20/p...

Another Abrego Garcia, and the Administration’s “Contrivance” to Keep Him in El Salvador’s Prison By @rgoodlaw.bsky.social On Monday's Fourth Circuit decision upholding district court order for administration to facilitate "Cristian's" return.

Note that Bessent doesn’t point to American perceptions or the potential impact on companies within the U.S., but instead the opinions of Trump’s corrupt foreign business partners.

Voters were more likely to approve of President Trump’s performance if they had not been following some of the major news stories of his first 100 days in office, a recent New York Times/Siena College poll found.

This is part of what I expected Patel would do: abuse his new power to lend credence to the ridiculous conspiracy theory/lie that the FBI instigated Jan. 6. I expect him to cherry pick from FBI files on informants to stitch a wholly dishonest narrative - with the help of Republicans in Congress.

Former Vice President Mike Pence will be on NBC’s Meet the Press tomorrow. He is a living reminder of how broken American politics has become. On Jan. 6, Trump sent a mob to the U.S. Capitol to intimidate his own vice president. “Hang Mike Pence!” And the Republican party remained on Trump’s side.

If you don’t follow @tomdreisbach.bsky.social you should - spot on here as usual:

The authoritarian threat is real. The response to it here is performative and absurd. I wrote much of the J6 Committee’s report. There is no question in my mind that Trump and his minions are working to build a new autocratic regime. They are going to lose. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/14/o...

A ruling out of the 8th Circuit today cut off the ability of voters in a large swath of the middle of the country to enforce their rights against race discrimination in voting under the Voting Rights Act. This is deeply problematic. Here's why. (1/3)

To get past all of this, we have to understand that we are not trying to restore the order that Trump is disrupting. That's an old world that's never coming back. The question right now is, what is our new world going to look like? thecampaignstrategist.substack.com/p/michael-po...

A key point here is that Christopher Rufo and the MAGA right have been running a campaign against academics, charging them with plagiarism, for years. Now one of their own is alleged to have committed the same transgression.

Important.

Excellent piece on Miller on habeas. Far superior to the surprisingly both-sides-ish coverage by some media. What Miller is claiming the power to do isn’t questionable or dubious. It would be anti-constitutional usurpation. www.stevevladeck.com/p/148-suspen...

Big Brother type stuff here.

Quite an exchange just now between Sen. Merkley and FBI Director Kash Patel over whether due process applies to people targeted by the Alien Enemies Act.

This remarkable pop-up appeared at NPR’s site when I clicked on an article. NPR notes that public media “is under threat” from the President of the United States, as Trump has issued a “series of threats to media organizations across the country.” It’s a fundraising message, but still…

This is completely false. The Supreme Court recently ruled - again - that migrants/deportees have a right to due process. The SC rejected the Trump admin’s deprivation of due process. Without it, America would just be taking Stephen Miller’s word at face value concerning who is an “illegal alien.”

Secretary Rubio was silent on this weekend's #WorldPressFreedomDay - breaking from Blinken, Pompeo, others. But Rubio championed the day as Senator. An astonishing weekend with DC Circuit backing Trump's dismantling of congressionally-mandated global media outlets I dissect it all. In The Know. ⤵️

The funny thing about the chyron here is that Elon Musk was never confirmed by the Senate as a cabinet member - an alleged Appointments Clause violation that’s being litigated. But of course this “senior advisor” is a de facto cabinet member.

Elon Musk’s AI bot, Grok, on the differences between the political parties.

And then there were 3. ICYMI: The FEC needs 4 commissioners to make enforcement and policy decisions. When I was removed from office without cause and without a replacement, I warned that the FEC could lose its quorum. Now that's happened. No cop on the money-in-politics beat, Day 1.

Elon Musk’s AI bot, Grok, has gone “woke.”
