An economist writes…!

I like people who like opera. I’m a Cosi Fan Tutte fan fan.

Great discussion on GDP 1.01 and economics generally on @bbcradio4.bsky.social Today programme between @dianecoyle1859.bsky.social and Darshini David this morning. Should be part of everyone’s education. West London economists unite!

How can companies respond to the rollback of environmental policies in the United States? Listen to the latest 'Frankly Speaking' responsible business podcast with my guest Anne L. Kelly, Vice-President at Ceres: Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/4kfO... Apple: podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/6...

Just a hunch here, based on an essay I wrote at University 50 years ago: Gene Hackman died of botulism. No evidence of anything else, multiple deaths including of a carnivore. They ate the same toxic meat

ESG and DEI are neither dead nor dying www.linkedin.com/posts/tom-le...

It’s funny, in a way - that when it comes to wars and issues of ‘defence’ - there’s no reluctance to find vast sums of money… but when it comes to Climate - it’s all teeth sucking and “that’s a bit expensive”..:).

Be clear: ESG was created because issues previously regarded as ’externalities’ were found to put investments at risk. One aspect of this is DEI, where previously fishing in a restricted pool for new talent meant that the best were not always chosen. Good risk management >requires< both ESG and DEI

Spot on. There is no economic, cost of living, environmental or any other justification for backing Rosebank. Only profit, and that can’t be assured, either!

If Trump is right that US air traffic control is populated by incompetents (due to DEI) there is only one safe way forward: Close down the whole system!

This is why the failure to finalise a Global Plastics Treaty at the end of last year was disappointing and why the Treaty must encompass an actual reduction in plastics production and use. #plastics #pollution #biodiversity

Bitcoin from tip“ This tale is the perfect parable for explaining why crypto is nothing but a massive scam which brings misery in its wake. The other clue - Trump and Musk both love it www.bbc.com/news/article...

70pc of flights are taken by 10pc of passengers. If that 10pc were to halve their flights that would see passengers’ carbon footprint fall by a third (without affecting anyone’s holidays)

Pass it on: Liz Truss crashed the economy

I'm trying to imagine how extremely difficult I'd find it to defend, for example, huge swathes of students who were demanding compensation from the government because they felt they hadn't had student loan increases properly communicated to them

This would amount to a massive tax cut for the highest paid people in Britain, paid for by higher taxes for low earners and big cuts to public services

Today Frances Perkins’ family home in Maine formally became an American National Monument. Congratulations to all concerned! If you want to know more about America’s first female Cabinet member (1932) read my book ‘The Courage to Meddle’ on Amazon!

Sorry to hear that Charles Handy has died at 92. A leading enlightened and progressive thinker on business issues for half a century he will be missed, not least by members of @thersaorg.bsky.social

Ministers speaking out against assisted dying ‘are giving false impression’, says peer

“One of the UK’s most high-profile campaigners against assisted dying is being investigated over funding to a parliamentary group that received £55,000 from lobbyists linked to the Christian right.”

Hint hint!

Thank you, Gail, for your support for @FairforYou - much appreciated

So that man Farage was there to address the farmers’ rally today. The organisers sure now how to get a sympathetic response from a Labour government, don’t they? (No)
