Fully expecting this opinion section 'dedicated to defending free markets' to be attacking Trump's tariffs on a daily basis...

This. I think a feature of a) most people in politics have almost no understanding of defence policy whereas 2.5% is something they can understand B) if you grapple with the bigger picture it is going to force you to confront some choices most people/parties would rather not confront

Hard to pick a favourite quote from this full-scale bonkers speech... .. but the 'in fact' in this one is absolutely hysterical

As the union for tech workers we are extremely worried that new job-cutting programmes may be aimed at those with protected characteristics, and the scrapping of fact-checking processes could result in workers being exposed to even more extreme and harmful content. prospect.org.uk/news/tech-un...

The announcement of new funding for arts and culture is welcome and hopefully demonstrates the value they bring to society 🏛️🎨 But culture is not just about artefacts and buildings - it’s about people. Some of this funding must be used to address endemic low pay and end job losses in the sector.

It's true that the speech is worth listening to or reading in full, in part because it's worth asking whether you think it's a 'provocative and thought-provoking prod' to suggest that the 10 million immigrants in the UK are a more "urgent challenge" than the Russian state.

This is as great as everyone is saying. Not just Glasman, quite a few of these bad faith commentators around who claim to be on the left but oppose any vaguely plausible version of what a left of centre government might think or do.

Interesting piece but a shame that there is no mention of the fact that one of the primary uses of any extra £ should be to actually pay heritage staff decent wages. The level of underpaying in this sector is off the charts.

The two 'soft ends' of Labour's coalition are Reform curious voters on right, Green curious voters on left. Looking at their values, they're relatively far apart on culture but united on economics. Reform curious Lab voters are also notably more left-wing economically than wider Reform vote.

Business and unions alike are really clear that faster growth for Britain demands closer ties with Europe. It's reassuring that ministers have declared they'll be ruthlessly pragmatic. And this report is a game plan for turning that instinct into action. www.thetimes.com/article/8423...

Osula is fun but you can really see why he isn't playing more minutes. 'Raw' is the kind way to put it... #nufc

This is pretty shocking. Make sure you look in the lower right hand corner.

100% agree with Diane Bizarre article, reads like it has been written by an Adam Smith Institute intern.

I’m getting really fed up of these abstract attacks on ‘regulation’ - why is Andy Haldane advocating the Doge approach for UK - blanket halving the number of regulators and their budgets? on.ft.com/416pqlx 1/2

1. I know this will cause me trouble, but it dismays me to see fellow environmentalists dismissing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) out of hand, in some cases clearly before they have understood the technologies involved or their potential uses. 🧵

If Newcastle win this we would have done it beating all of the current top 3 teams in the league. Not bad. #nufc

UK 10 year Gilt yield down another 5 basis points today - currently trading at 4.48% Now within 8 basis points of the level on 30 October 2024 when Rachel Reeves held her Budget 👇

The basic issue at NUFC is that we have built a good first XI but have failed to build a good squad, partly because some guys are always injured, partly because we don't produce a lot of good young players, partly because we keep selling decent squad players for PSR reasons.

Five years on, few Britons think Brexit has been good for anything % saying Brexit has had a positive impact on... Control the UK has over its laws: 31% UK's ability to respond to COVID-19: 23% UK's level of international trade: 11% NHS: 6% Full list in chart 👇 yougov.co.uk/politics/art...

We need a national inquiry into how this person was able to hold one of the great offices of state.

This tells us very little other than that question framing really matters...

Look I like Eddie Howe but I simply do not get why he hasn't taken this chance to make some earlish subs and rest some guys. This is why they get tired. #nufc

I feel Playbook, and every other outlet, should be mentioning the US numbers when reporting Trump’s 5% NATO defence spending demand.

UK 10 year gilts are back to basically where they were at Christmas before the latest Trump-induced market panic, but you are unlikely to hear much about that in the Tory press.
