Feb 28, 1977: federal transport minister Otto Lang announces the creation of VIA Rail as an operating subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway (itself a federal Crown corporation from 1919 until 1995). VIA wouldn't become an independent Crown corporation until April 1, 1978.

Feb 27, 1960: the Locomotive Preservation Committee of the Upper Canada Railway Society visits the Canadian National Railway’s Spadina roundhouse. The purpose of the visit was to choose a CN steam locomotive suitable for preservation and presentation to the City of Toronto. 1/3

Feb 26, 2004: Ontario Northland wins an $81 million contract to refurbish up to 121 GO Transit commuter coaches in its North Bay shops. Ontario Northland outbid the Moncton, New Brunswick-based Industrial Rail Services Inc. for the GO contract. 1/2

Feb 25, 1832: the government of Lower Canada grants a charter for "making a railroad from Lake Champlain to the River St. Lawrence" to a group of railway promoters that includes Montreal brewer and financier John Molson. 1/3

Feb 24, 1945: the Globe and Mail devotes almost a full page to a profile of the Model Railroad Club of Toronto, located in Toronto Union Station. The club occupied Room 470, a 16x165-foot (4.9m x 50.3m) fourth-floor space on the north side of the Ticket Lobby, completely hidden from public view. 1/3

Feb 23, 1905: the Board of Railway Commissioners authorizes the Grand Trunk Railway to expropriate land north of the Esplanade. The property, located between York and Yonge Streets, would be used for a new passenger station and yards. 1/3

Feb 22, 1893: the Toronto Telegram reports on the two oldest surviving Canadian steam locomotives passing through West Toronto Junction. The engines—the "Samson" (1838) and the "Albion" (circa-1840), along with a tender and passenger coach—were en-route to Chicago. 1/3

Feb 21, 1959: Canadian Pacific opens a $14 million addition to its Royal York Hotel (now the Fairmont Royal York), across from Toronto Union Station. The new wing along Front Street, east of the original 1929 building, added 400 rooms to the hotel, bringing the total to 1,616. 1/3

Feb 20, 1995: the official last day of operation for "whistle trains" on the TTC Bloor-Danforth subway line (now known as Line 2). From this day forward, more melodious chimes were used to signal the doors closing on subway trains throughout the system. 1/2

Feb 19, 1942: the Second Victory Loan train is displayed at Canadian Pacific's North Toronto Station from 10 AM to 10 PM. Regular passenger service had ended at the station in 1930 but CP continued to use the facility for displays and special movements. 1/3

Feb 18, 1957: passenger service ends on the London & Port Stanley Railway when train No. 15 arrives in London from St. Thomas for the last time. The line began operations in 1856 and was leased to several railways before it was taken over by the City of London in 1913. 1/3

Feb 17, 2003: heavy snow buckles the roof of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD, severely damaging several exhibits. Some of the collection dated from the 1830s and was housed in a full-circle roundhouse built in 1884 as a repair shop for passenger cars. 1/3

Feb 16, 1865: the Canadian Express Company is incorporated in Montreal. One of the company's principals was William G. Fargo, who was also an owner of the famous U.S. Wells-Fargo Company. 1/2

Feb 15, 1999: the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada unveils a plaque commemorating Canada’s Black railway porters at Montreal's Windsor Station. Canadian Pacific Railway president Rob Ritchie addressed hundreds of surviving porters and their families at the ceremony. 1/3
