I long believed that the presence of liberal voices on X did more good than harm. No more. And I now find it outright distasteful to see the Swedish PM making his official statements there.

Over 900 (and counting) Political Scientists have signed on to express their alarm at Trump’s blatant disregard for existing laws, regulations, and democratic norms. Please share widely. Statement and full list of signers (so far) can be found here: drive.google.com/file/d/1lGk2...

When the bully pulls the gloves off, it’s time to use your head.

This amounts to the most significant data leak in cyber history. Private individuals in the data business now have access to your Social Security information. This violates privacy laws in every state. Hopefully, state AGs will file suit & pursue criminal charges. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/u...

pluralistic.net/2025/01/15/b... Interesting idea. Hitting the oligarchs without raising prices or harming workers. Would it be possible to retaliate by (selectively?) rolling back IP protection?

I had to go back and read this blog post from 2016 by @jvoth.bsky.social vothspeak.blogspot.com/2016/11/trum...

Californian secession seems less ludicrous today than a week ago. calmatters.org/commentary/2...

There are natural experiments and then there are experiments in nature. Fantastic. This will be an IgNobel for sure!

Here’s a piece I wrote with @rfisman.bsky.social in the NYT, collecting some of our thoughts about what the oligarchic embrace of Trump can do to our economy and our politics. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/21/o...

A beautiful thread - worth reading even if you initially find it difficult and counterintuitive. It’s like a drama that is first painful to watch but then ends well.

As an editorial cartoonist, my job is to hold powerful people and institutions accountable. For the first time, my editor prevented me from doing that critical job. So I have decided to leave the Post…I will not stop holding truth to power…because as they say, “Democracy dies in darkness”.

👇🎯💯 Democracy Dies in Unilateral Disarmament Some of us have been saying this for years now. It also applies to things like the pardon power, stealing SCOTUS seats, etc. All this stuff is bad. But until the GOP <mutually> agrees to stop doing it, good behavior from only Dems is the worst outcome.

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my skeet Took a day to write, it is not a tweet It’s based on another by an Irish bloke And it fails to rhyme So I wanna be a Starter Pack writer Starter Pack writer

What can one do? I find it hard to sit still, so I wrote an Op-Ed to FoxNews with counterarguments to the tariffs they have been praising. But of course they won't publish it. So, I just post it here.

We (= Department of Economics at Stockholm School of Economics) are hiring two assistant professors (open field and health). Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

IMO this critique is misinformed. Obviously, Acemoglu, Johnson, & Robinson are not dependency theorists, but they have more elements of DT than these authors allow for or perhaps know aobut. A mini-thread of things the authors of this critique missed about A, J, & R, jointly or individually.

Money in politics and morons in politics are not independent events.

Mmm this is a bit different from the usual anodyne speech of a Commission president as regards a Council presidency... ec.europa.eu/commission/p...

Intrigued by the Physics Nobel, I browsed Hopfield's publications. Here is one that caught my interest: www.its.caltech.edu/~jkenny/nb250c/papers/Hopfield-1983b.pdf

Trying to figure out how to make sense of the modern GOP? Let's consider Ziblatt's "Conservative Parties and the Birth of Democracy," specifically Chapter 2 on the origins and choices of Europe's conservative parties in the 19th century 1/n

Another shoe just dropped in the ongoing Dan Ariely scandal: JMR, a top 4 marketing journal, has issued a formal “Expression of Concern” for Mazar, Amir, & Ariely (2008), the infamous Ten Commandments study 🧵

Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #1,185,463. This is a prime number!
