In my city there is one cybertruck and one DIY parody of a cybertruck and the parody truck has become a local celebrity. Meanwhile, I always wish I had some rotten eggs to throw at the tesla whenever I see it.

There's a movement in neuroscience suggesting we should be pursuing bigger bets with larger teams. I think there's a case for doing a bit of this, but I think it's a bad idea to prioritise it for two reasons, and a good case for saying we should be moving in the exact opposite direction. 🧠🧪

Inspired by @juliedgolomb.bsky.social I spent 15 minutes explaining research budgets and indirect costs to my lab meeting today, here's how I did it (1/4)

An LLM "creates textual claims, and then predicts the citations that might be associated with similar text. Obviously, this practice violates all norms of scholarly citation. At best, LLMs gesticulate toward the shoulders of giants." Bender, West, and I contributed to this pro/con piece in PNAS.

I've noticed that journals hold theory papers to experiment-centric standards, stifling idea generation. JEB has launched an article type for theory+modeling that will address this. A bold move and sign of thoughtful leadership -- will other journals follow? journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/...

Roughly 6,000 readers answered our poll, with many declaring that Bluesky was nicer, kinder and less antagonistic to science than X https://go.nature.com/42tH8Ai

... and so it begins again.🧠🌴🌊🌍 Imbizo.africa is on its way, ... without me 😥, but look! at the views through those windows. I wanna go and learn about all things neuro at one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Don't you, too?

I sort of love this…. 😂

Do you know a UK-based wheelchair user who works in a lab and would be willing to user-test our prototype of what is believed to be the first-ever lab coat adapted for wheelchair users? Please share far & wide! Interest form: forms.office.com/e/66FhcQjqRT More info: www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-east/new...

Cutting it a bit fine, but here’s my review of the year in neuroscience for 2024 The eighth of these, would you believe? We’ve got dark neurons, tiny monkeys, the most complete brain wiring diagram ever constructed, and much more… Published on The Spike Enjoy! medium.com/the-spike/20...

todays my birthday. it’s also the day 16 years ago I discovered that a customer for the data center I worked at had racked 3 full cabinets with over $200k of brand new server hardware on top of $80 of canned soda from our customer lounge vending machine to avoid spending $600 on mounting rails

This is an excellent thread summarizing many of my own objections. I’d like to add two thoughts: 🧵 1/n

Here is a starter pack for relevant #neuro institutions on BlueSky. go.bsky.app/LMFsego Did we forget anyone?

One thing I love about science is that I can have some crazy idea and then a few minutes later realize I know the one maniac in the world who probably knows how to get it done.

I couldn’t find a starter pack for POCs working in STEM, so I started one myself - my network here is still small and I didn’t want to assume how people identify, so please reply or DM me if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/BJkKQVR

oh im going to jail

www.theguardian.com/media/2024/n... .... just saying.

Did you know you can post to these neurofeeds with just emojis: Neuroskyence: 🧠🟦 or 🧠📈 Compneurosky: 🧠🤖 or 🧠💻 Interoception: 🧠🫀 or 🧠🫁 Neuropsychiatry: 🧠🩺 Save those characters and use an emoji!

Great advances in open source ephys systems from @openephys.bsky.social . Congrats @jonnewman.bsky.social and team!

I made a starter pack of researchers working on spiking neural networks, neuromorphic hardware and all that jazz. At the moment, this community doesn't seem to be very present on Bluesky (more on Mastodon), but let me know if I've missed anyone! 🧠🧪 go.bsky.app/46Eu9GG

Last year I taught a graduate seminar, "Computational neuroscience in practice", which invited experimental neuroscientists to think computationally about their data. Reflecting on it, the class helped me better appreciate the inherent challenges of this enterprise.

I made a systems neuroscience starter pack, focused on experimentalists who study the brain at the level of populations of neurons! Also want to be on the list? Reply or DM me a picture of your ephys rig or 2p setup and I'll add you 🤭 go.bsky.app/UiqX7ry

If you are theoretically inclined neuroscientist, check out my new #TheoreticalNeurosciencePodcast at theoreticalneuroscience.no . Eight episodes out at present, with Grace Lindsay, Christof Koch, Arvind Kumar, Sacha van Albada, Li Zhaoping, Henrik Linden, Carina Curto and Konrad Kording.
