so very excited that my former student and rising NFL star DeWayne Carter will join me for my first local book event at @epiloguebooks.bsky.social! come see two @duke-university.bsky.social alums for a convo about the experiences of college football players March 3 at 6pm (link below)

thanks for sharing, @brookebennett.bsky.social! happy to see it arrived! your new side project sounds really interesting. keep me posted!!

today is the day! "Tackling the Everyday" is officially out in the world! only a few are pictured here, but i'm so thankful to the many thinkers and writers who inspired me during this process ✨✨ if you're so inclined to buy (link below), please post, read, share, request, etc!

"This is where life with my daughter has led me-to a new understanding of what people should value in one another. It’s time to stop hating the poor and disabled. It’s time to stop worshipping work." a beautiful essay about kinship, care, and the effects of these recent federal funding cuts

We're hiring at the @digblk.bsky.social! Hiring a "Data Scientist" (very broadly defined) to collaborate on the @ccp-org.bsky.social, @douglassday.bsky.social & emerging work on Black archives & AI. Can be mostly remote! Info: bit.ly/cbdr-ds We review apps this month. Help us spread the word?

i was introduced to @jessicawluther.com's work thru the @burnitalldownpod.com and have been hooked ever since! her critical perspective of 🏈 (well, sport, in general) and its multiple harms is so needed she's all-around good people and to have someone like Jessica support my book is such a dream ✨

This “chaos, lawlessness, and destruction … can be understood as part of the admin’s central ideological project: restoring America’s traditional hierarchies of race and gender. They want … a rigged system that maintains a mirage of equal opp while maintaining an unofficial racial hierarchy.”

and after being the first african-american to earn a phd from harvard, he allegedly said “The honor, I assure you, was Harvard’s.” happy birthday to a thinker and ethnographer who always had a way with words

so exciting to see that my books are being delivered a little early! looking forward to getting your book soon, @doclb2.bsky.social. i already have a space for it on my bookshelf. when's the official date again??

i've followed @edgeofsports.bsky.social's work in politics + sports for years, so i was beyond excited when he reached out to interview me in 2023. we had a great convo that i still think about now i'm thrilled to learn how such a bold sportswriter like Dave read my own work. what generous words!

this week, i was invited to a screening of a doc about C.B. Claiborne, duke’s first black athlete tracing Dr. Claiborne’s exps growing up in VA thru his time on campus in the late 60s, the film beautifully highlights the importance of this pioneering alum check out the trailer: cbclaibornedoc.com

Please save date: I’m honored to host an event featuring presentations and conversation with Michelle Lanier and Destiny Hemphill at UNC-Greensboro. The event is: “Black Feminist and Womanist Ecoaesthetics: Craft, Ceremony and the South” at the Claxton Room, Elliott University center (3/19 at 5pm)

There's still (a little!) room left. Register for @dukegsfs.bsky.social's Feminist Theory Workshop. Registration is free. Durham is (usually) warm in March. Feminist community is everything. Our keynote speakers are brilliant. Hope to see you there!

“The [#SuperBowl] ads, when it comes to gender in particular, do reflect some ambivalence of the moment that we’re in […] Women’s representation is in an incredibly frustrating holding pattern and the same goes for masculinity, too.” - @emilycontois.bsky.social

“These people constructed an [education] system that is based on not loving our children, not loving us. So the antidote to that has to be, how do we show love to ourselves, to our communities and to young people?” can’t wait for this book from @eveewing.bsky.social! thetriibe.com/2025/02/eve-...

ICYMI: I was on yesterday’s code switch episode about race, labor, and power in the U.S. through football!

"From pee-wees to the pros, what football tells us about race in the U.S". Duke anthropologist Dr. @traciecanada.bsky.social featured on @npr.org's "Code Switch" in a conversation about football, race, labor and power in the United States! www.npr.org/2026/01/01/1...

following last night's #SuperBowl game, check me out on today's episode of @npr.org's code switch, with @domoniquefoxworth.bsky.social, as we talk about how the pipeline to the #NFL particularly harms black players thanks to @geedee215.bsky.social for this convo! www.npr.org/2026/01/01/1...

“A few days before the #SuperBowl, the #NFL made the decision to remove the slogan, coinciding with a nationwide rebuke of #DEI. To perform at a halftime show for an org like the NFL implies a tacit complicity in that type of empire, even in the face of raised Black fists at the 20-yard line.”

If they were truly interested in cutting costs they could not have multiple marine pilots flying jets over a football game

almost all black entertainers to start the game + black players overrepresented on teams that are each led by a black quarterback we’re also in nola during black history month a fascinating display at this year’s #SuperBowl that is no longer wishes to ‘end racism’ www.nbcnews.com/sports/nfl/n...

and just to add a few more to this list: @amirarose.bsky.social @bachynski.bsky.social @doclb2.bsky.social @jessicawluther.com @julesboykoff.bsky.social tons of critical sports scholarship out there to complement today’s game

it happened! ledisi, with 125 New Orleans high school singers, was beautiful! for more about the song, check out @imaniperry.bsky.social’s important account here: bookshop.org/p/books/may-...

"The key to being a successful pioneer isn’t the boldness to go first. It’s having the skills and fortitude to survive the experience." What a sentence.

watch this doc! “The NFL, more than any other 🇺🇸 sport, has built its brand on messages that have helped shape everything from patriotism, militarism, and war, to gender norms and our concept of manhood, to the politics of race and the history of racism, to the place of money and corporate power.”

my 1st in person event for my @ucpress.bsky.social book! thanks to an invite from Victoria Jackson and ASU, i’m in the desert tonight at 5:30 if you’re in town, join me and Hamza Abdullah to chat about all things 🏈 and brotherhood given *everything*, we’ll have lots to talk about!

i’m leaving the Black Men’s Brain Health conference with lots of ideas for my new ethnographic work about concussions fun bonuses: meeting the other emerging scholars, in nola (during super bowl week), at Xavier Univ (an hbcu celebrating its centennial) www.mensbrainhealth.org/2025-conference

a Tackling the Everyday sighting! so cool to see that people are receiving their pre-ordered copies before the publication date @susandblum.bsky.social, would love to hear your thoughts once you’ve had a chance to read 😊😊

One of the clearest pieces of evidence that the Nazis were so stupid and so wrong about everything is that they truly thought they were genetically superior to Jesse Owens.

growing up in greensboro, it was such a big deal to see this space turned into a museum in 2010 to echo @drnickiw.bsky.social, 65 years since the sit-ins began and here we still are
