The kids are all right

more and more these days, I find myself thinking that you can accept the discipline of your political goals or you can accept the discipline of your resentments.

Feeling this acutely today! Under a total different but related topic. Weeeeeee!

Folks in OSS land, depending on the argument/news/hot take of the cycle.

"Resilience...comes from how long you can tolerate being in this in-between[the learning space, in-between not-knowing and knowing". —Dr. Becky I think our jobs as more experienced folks in work and community spaces, is to model getting good at that in-between. www.instagram.com/reel/DF_XjIL...

For all the things I tackle that fall under this phrase(which comes from a much better full story), I am not a fan of it for the visualization aspect 🫣 and would love another option: "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!" Y'all know of any good alternatives that fit the same vibe?

Judge rules that Black church in DC, which won a $2.8 million default judgment against the Proud Boys, now gains control over the trademark “Proud Boys.” The far-right group is barred from selling any related merchandise or symbols without the consent of the church. Gift link:

Beyonce winning Best Country Album at the Grammys gonna piss off allll the right people.

Doechii the ICON you are

You'd think open source leader folks would be practiced at discerning when we can and should work together, and when something new needs to be created... What a world that would be, eh? (and yes I'm self-aware enough to know I should be included in this group of chuckleheads from time to time)

Watching this on repeat how is your day going?

Washington is full of rule-following valedictorians who were inspired by the West Wing and did Model UN and moot court and studied their heroes and who believe in using government to help people. That's nice, but you need to learn how to swing on the illiterate bullies who steal lunch money.

A huge thank you to whoever shared about Elinor Ostrom and her lifetime of work on here. Just started on Governing the Commons and I have so many thoughts and curiosities on how/if it can be applied to open source...

Oh no, the Chinese plagiarism machine might have plagiarized the American plagiarism machine search.app/gLKPBELL2weQ...

Hit me today that I had set strong limits for the course of my open source career on not consuming info from HN for many reasons, including proactively protecting my mental health, and that I had not set limits with LinkedIn because it hadn't been a problem. Always a good day to start 😆

i think if any of these AI bros were remotely serious about using this technology to improve society they'd be excited at the idea of someone managing to run laps around them for 1/10th the computing power but instead they are seething, sinophobically

grant me the serenity to scroll past things that are none of my business, courage to gas up my buddies in a world where kindness is rare, and the wisdom to know the difference between a poll and a rhetorical question

Pixelfed is cool.

Over the course of my life I have stumbled my way into various circles, and I can tell you that everyone, regardless of prestige, is just Some Guy (gender neutral) and there is no reason to put anyone on a pedestal.

what’s your favorite instance of haptic nostalgia—the poignant memory of the physicality of an obsolete thing—like dialing a rotary phone, shifting gears in a manual transmission, opening a soda can with a pull ring?

This is a monumental day for the future of the open web, though it might not be obvious for a while. Mastodon matures its governance model with a great, solid non-profit blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/01/the-... and a coalition of independents push to open up Bluesky's AT Protocol: freeourfeeds.com

I don’t think people understand how devastating the end of net neutrality, and consumer protections around internet connectivity, are going to be. Imagine the situation where you pay for 4 or 5 different streaming services, each with different “exclusives” — but for the Internet itself.

The greatest gift I gave myself(and the orgs I serve) working in open source oh so many years ago, was learning awareness in and holding to who I do/do not give my energy to. And my organizations' energy. It has been the gift that keeps on giving. May that free you. Caring too much is a burden.

That journalist is @annodea.com and the interview got published in @siliconrepublic.bsky.social. Ann captured my thoughts perfectly. The success of this platform isn't solely on the Bluesky team, it's a shared responsibility, the community has a role to play. www.siliconrepublic.com/enterprise/k...

Is everybody believing in the servers? If you don't believe in the servers they don't work

Throwing this out to the universe after some energizing conversations this week— There are folks and a few orgs doing really great work helping get more funds to people building in open source. And I mean more directly building, like Maintainers. Open Source-aligned Founders. What I heard AGAIN:
