Wow. @cnn.com could not manage to have 1 guest who is against the genocide in Gaza. The inhumanity that @cnn.com and Abby Phillips are hosting right now is absolutely disgusting.

state troopers and police in general overwhelmingly support Trump and back these policies. the cops are not going to save you or anyone from the cops.

The second edition of the ELL Teacher’s Toolbox is amazing! This is a resource I can’t recommend enough to educators of multilingual learners. @larryferlazzo.bsky.social & @khullsyp.bsky.social

Harvard has dismissed the faculty leaders of its Center for Middle Eastern Studies due to the specious claim of ‘antisemitism’ for a ‘failure to represent [genocidal] Israeli perspectives.’ www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

Columbia University’s Board of Trustee co-chair and new Acting President Claire Shipman appeared on stage at AIPAC’s 2018 conference. (And look who Sen. Coons — who appeared with Shipman — led a bill with to send more aid to Israel):

Wow. An AIPAC attendee is now president of Columbia. This is grim

Earlier this month, Taal, along with two U.S. citizens, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s executive orders that target foreign nationals who it claims are national security threats. “I believed I was going to be a target eventually,” says Taal. www.democracynow.org/2025/3/24/mo...

A special education leader under George W. Bush says the dismantling of the Department of Education will impact students with disabilities. (via @wbur.org)

I truly believe that Columbia “leaders” did not cave- this is exactly what they want to do.

I wonder what the concrete asks are at the Oligarchs events that are taking place. What are people being asked to do?

You were told that it was 'impossible' to dismantle institutions. And abolitionists told you this wasn't true and that there were many institutions that SHOULD BE dismantled. But lots of people can't "imagine" the end of prisons, policing, etc... In reality, every single thing can be dismantled.

While I understand our academic institutions have often been on the wrong side of history, this is still devastating. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Momodou Taal: “When we say Palestine is a litmus test, we’re saying that it is not that we privilege the Palestinian cause over every other cause, but rather Palestine holds a mirror up unto the world and says, 'What kind of world do we want to live in?'”

If elite institutions weren't absolute cowards, going after the powerful first would have been a strategic mistake. But so far their intuition that the people with the most protection are also the biggest cowards has proven depressingly correct.

Columbia University has failed to defend academic freedom & freedom of speech & allowed a great institution to be bullied & extorted into submission by an administration hellbent on contorting higher education to their will. The AAUP condemns this capitulation. We can & must fight back.

Mahmoud Khalil finally gets the chance to speak for himself: “My arrest was a direct consequence of exercising my right to free speech as I advocated for a free Palestine and an end to the genocide in Gaza, which resumed in full force Monday night.”

Watching this interview with Schumer on All In and I hope the clip circulates soon because it will be clear to everyone [if it's not already clear] that the Democratic Party is not up to this moment in the least.

NEW: Family of Mahmoud Khalil just released footage of his arrest “Stop resisting” “He’s not resisting” Agents seen continuing to ignore Mahmoud’s wife as she asks basic questions

They're moving to classify constitutionally protected speech as terrorism. This is a five alarm fire.

What the f*ck, Chuck⁉️ This is what we’re dealing with in our current Democratic leadership… “It’s a disaster in a few weeks if there was a shutdown, everyone would be complaining…” — @schumer.senate.gov Chris Hayes makes more sense than Schumer. Watch this.

This is Albany. We cannot normalize this.

“I asked Schlanger just how freaked out we should be by Khalil’s apprehension. ‘I teach constitutional law,’ she said. ‘And I’m freaking out.’”

Defend the liberty of a stranger as you would defend your own, or that of a loved one, because that is what's actually on the table—whether we are a society that will sit still as our neighbors are snatched in the night, and disappeared into darkness, or a society that will fight for each other.

UPDATE on Mahmoud Khalil from his lawyers and his wife: "Today I spoke to Mahmoud and he is healthy and his spirits are undaunted by his predicament." (Legal team now includes ACLU, CCR.)

Free Mahmoud Khalil

Friends, I have not been active on here and I do not have the reach that I had on the awful app. Mahmoud is my daughter’s friend. Right now, the Columbia students are asking that we sign this petition, share it widely and continue talking about Mahmoud. Please sign and share and keep talking.

This is horrific

Columbia affiliates have received two emails since the detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia student protestor: — An announcement that campus is locking back down, closing it off from the community — A newsletter titled "How Columbia Strengthens Relationships in our Community"

Truly shameful.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Trump Administration disappeared Mahmoud Khalil in order to capitalize on the liberal/left split on Gaza. You either step up to defend people and protect rights or you don’t. This is another crossroads and I pray people see it for what it is.

It takes under 5 minutes to call/email @schumer.senate.gov, Gillibrand, and Hochul. Where is Mahmoud Khalil?!

The way it works is that you strip fundamental rights from targets with less political support that people will turn their consciences off to justify persecuting and then eventually the state can do it to anyone, that’s always been the plan bsky.app/profile/pbum...

We're already living in the aftermath of a successful administrative coup d' etat led by the executive branch. It's taking many people a while to catch up.

The arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil—a green card holder whose wife is eight months pregnant—is a blatant assault on the First Amendment and a sign of advancing authoritarianism under Trump. He must be released now.

The Trump administration’s detention of Mahmoud Khalil — a green card holder studying in this country legally — is targeted, retaliatory, and an extreme attack on his First Amendment rights. apnews.com/article/colu...

Armed government agents went to the home of a lawful resident of the United States without a warrant and arrested him over the content of his speech. This is a five-alarm fire for civil liberties.

Free Mahmoud Khalil. Profound shame on Columbia University in particular.

i don't know if i've ever felt more hopeless than watching an elderly black man get dragged out of the room for calling out fascism while dozens of white people sat silently with their lollipop signs and watched and did nothing
