Foxtail stem form in a slash pine (Pinus elliottii) family in northern Florida, U.S. These trees are in their third growing season, ~ 3 m tall. This trait has been shown to be heritable in P. elliottii, P. caribaea, & probably others that I missed in a quick literature search.
