The only person truly responsible for Pete Rose's absence from Cooperstown is Pete Rose, for the actions he took in life, knowing the penalties. If MLB wants to induct him because it is ready to turn a blind eye to sports gambling, that reflects a profound moral failure of the game's stewards.

Feldman made a good point about flattened lottery odds that I hadn't heard elsewhere: when really bad teams slide back (as has repeatedly happened over the last few years), it just means they'll tank (or suck) again in subsequent seasons, so flattened odds can encourage (or perpetuate) tanking, too.

I'm Kinsella-pilled, so Shoeless Joe can head right in to the Hall, but if they're going to continue to use the character clause as a cudgel against A-Rod and Manny (and Bonds at the committees), the BBWAA and whatever committees are involved have an obligation to tell Rose to fuck off forever.

FWIW Santander & Gimenez (and Angel Bastardo, who is on the 60-day IL) are Venezuelan, and Yariel was born in Cuba (I don't really understand how citizenship/nationality works for Cubans in MLB, but I think it's complicated), and they haven't had trouble so far, but a travel ban would be disastrous.

My most strongly held "process" belief is that voters will always choose the real thing over some watered-down imitation, so "triangulating" towards an opponent's position validates that position, makes you look phoney, and alienates your own voters. Don't fucking do it!
