you can rewrite shit but you can't rewrite nothing (ht @mikeduncan.bsky.social, for years ago cutting through a rough swath of my writers block with this unsubtle knife)

DOGE's "savings" is like saying, "I've saved hundreds of dollars by never changing the oil or replacing the brakes in my old car."

another great example along with Wired and Teen Vogue of how real journalism these days can be a lot braver at outlets where no one is trying to get in good with the White House press secretary they’re out here with us, reporting on what’s happening to us all, instead of trying to get inside access

I don't think there is a single topic where the gap between reality and the median American's opinion is larger than the question of Donald Trump's business acumen

“I am a king and my will is law” isn’t a clever distraction from what he’s doing, it’s the central underlying justification for everything he’s doing.

Thinking everything is a distraction is classic wishful thinking to avoid doing literally anything. The fascism is the point. All the things they do are serious.

For obvious reasons, the lesson—the internet wisdom—behind ‘don’t feed the trolls’ is applicable to random comment board participants but not the president of the United States. The president and his White House staff spending time fantasizing about a monarchy is not wise to ignore.

Even if this number was true (it’s not), Elon Musk’s strategy seems to be ‘I lost weight by cutting off my legs!’

Oh hey! Subscribing to Blood in the Machine by @bcmerchant.bsky.social means I have five free one-month subscriptions to it I can share. Let me know if you want one! A quote from his newsletter: "I’m writing for the people Silicon Valley is happening TO—which, increasingly, is all of us."

One problem with the evilness in the news is that it makes you sound crazy if you try describe some of what’s going on… things like Elon Musk posting 14 American flags at 2:14 as code, mentioning it sounds freaking nutty but it’s clearly intentional

Every story is a maintenance story

My offhand math is doing an across the board fire close to all the probie new hires just in the GS/equivalent systems would net probably at least 50K people, maybe closer to 75K, but expand that to the WGs and it's like 150K+

Strong, resilient systems are not efficient systems, and vice versa.

Everyone in the Trump coalition voted for someone to get got. Most of them didn’t realize that they were that someone to someone else.

From an airline pilot perspective, I’m just going to point out the obvious: firing technicians who maintain the systems we use to navigate and get into position to land is…unwise. When the system works, nobody notices it. When it doesn’t work, everyone notices it. But it takes people the whole time.

i am 100% of the belief that simply forcing take-writers to answer the question "who specifically said this and why are they significant" would result in substantially fewer bad takes circulating in the world

Went to a fight and a hockey game broke out Go Canada

Tonight’s Special Election results are posting now and there are two important results so far: Seattle’s Social housing initiative 1A - a citizen created and community rooted initiative to fund social housing with a corporate high-earners payroll tax in Seattle is passing #waelex #seaelex

This is from the Seattle subreddit and I think we literally might've lived next to this guy in 2006. We got multiple long, unhinged handwritten notes from him (and he was mad we didn't invite him over to socialize).

His illiquidity is the danger. He has to keep doing shit like this. The Not Actually Real Money Bus must be kept above $200 billion or it will explode. All of this shit is basically debt and blackmail and it's forcing people like Musk into increasingly precarious and dangerous positions.

Ran to the grocery store today & the checker loved my 6 + 4 + 3 = 2 shirt. A fun baseball conversation was a nice bright spot amid *gestures at everything*

Beautiful

No ad will top that one

Birds etc.!

Every day brings new stupidities you didn't even realize were possible.

The idea that the use of em dashes exposes a writer's use of AI is the sort of idea that only AI could come up with.
