Making people too scared to fly is how we overcome this hard-to-abate source of CO₂ emissions.

“Refusal to secure our information sphere is a refusal to secure our country. It’s time that all of our political parties face up to that and act. We don’t have much time left before it really is too late.” ⏰

The current state of the science system – ranging from purgatory to vandalism – has made the front page of today Herald with good articles by @jamiemorton.bsky.social. (1/n)

Before it's taken offline, I want you to know about the NASA website where you can learn about the stratospheric ozone hole and check on how it's doing. It has cool movies like this one, showing the growth of the ozone hole during the Austral spring last year. ozonewatch.gsfc.nasa.gov/SH.html

Govt are getting excited about lower interest rates and publishing some truly misleading nonsense. My adjusted design is messy, but the numbers and text better reflect the reality. Couple more importants things on this subject... [🧵 1/3]

Rapid Unscheduled Dissassembly of Callaghan Innovation underway. Recycling innovation boosters (the people helping startups and firms) will prove difficult with a gap before a replacement Advanced Technology Organisation starts up. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

The IPCC has table in its AR6 Synthesis Report of the global emission reductions by 2035 that would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C (already with limited overshoot). Can a highly developed country reducing significantly less than the global average claim to be consistent with Paris?

As we move from news to analysis, it is getting harder to see any success hiding inside last week’s science announcements. newsroom.co.nz/2025/01/30/s... Will the pearls of wisdom in the SSAG report be heeded?

Worth looking through the quotes and replies to this!

Looks like NZ is well on its way to being known as where those who make massive cuts to universities and research institutions come from. 😥 www.bbc.com/news/article...

On the upside, maybe the demise of the mis-named Callaghan Innovation means we can finally reclaim Sir Paul’s legacy and enthusiasm for what’s possible? open.substack.com/pub/subslack...

It would take incredible optimism or belief in magic to be convinced Government's implementation of SSAG's useful report will succeed, based on yesterday's announcements. Further analysis from us at NZAS. scientists.org.nz/news/13454342

Following Lucy Stewart's interview on RNZ Morning Report was this interview where Alexa Cook did a good job of trying to pin down outgoing Minister Judith Collins, ending her role in Science Innovation and Technology this week. www.rnz.co.nz/national/pro... The Minister needed a fact check! (1/n)
