Meanwhile back in Alaska. Winter has carried on as I've processed my New Zealand images and I've finally downloaded what was in my camera. Our state bird, the Willow Ptarmigan, strutting into spring. Chugach State Park #Alaska 🪶

Pectoral Sandpipers: Not so good for ID purposes but I liked the effect of the backlighting through the wings. Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge #Alaska #birds

@yolobirder.bsky.social Welcome all to the Yellow Legged Gull 100 metre freestyle event

Beavers are pretty adaptable but this one that I met last summer streteched their boundaries, at least in my experience. Here it is emerging from the Bering Sea to graze on the coastal tundra near Nome #Alaska #InternationalBeaverDay 🦊

Another pesky prion. This one's (I think) a Fairy Prion. At sea southwest of New Zealand. 🪶🦑

Downy Woodpecker watching the watcher. Toronto #Ontario #WoodpeckerWednesday 🪶

White-headed Petrel. When I go on trips there is often a bird that ranks high on my want list; doesn't have to be rare or showy but for some reason they tweak my curiosity. On my recent trip to the subantarctic islands south of New Zealand this was one of those birds and I saw quite a few. 🪶🦑

From the albatross I love to the seabirds that torment me, the prions! I'm going with Antarctic Prion on this one, seen at sea northeast of the Macquarie Island. 🪶🦑

A couple of Light-mantled Albatrosses (still my favorite albatross)demonstrating flight formations south of the Auckland Islands, New Zealand 🪶🦑

The Campbell Albatross looks much like the Black-browed Alabtross that I recently posted. Indeed many consider them conspecific. The most noticeable difference is the yellow eye of the Campbell (black in the black-browed). At sea, southeast of #Australia 🪶🦑

The aurora did aurora things last night while the water in Turnagain Arm was amazingly smooth. No wind and 40F/4C was a treat!

Black-browed Albatross, the albatross that has been my most regular companion wherever I've visited in the Southern Ocean. This one was surfing the waves in the middle of nowhere but I think it was withing the Australian EEZ 🪶🦑

Brace Yourself. A Royal Penguin confronts the surf as it prepares to head out to sea. This penguin is endemic to Macquarie Island, south of #Australia 🪶🦑

Post a Warning. Beware of moose in bear's clothing!

Avoid bears with cubs and never, ever try to cut in while they are dancing. Brown bears waltzing at McNeil River, Alaska. #WorldBearDay 🦊

By proclamation of this American Tree Sparrow it is #WorldSparrowDay They nest in very shruby areas but this one did have a tree to sing from. DenaliNP #Alaska 🪶

In recognition of #PiDay here is a Little Pi(ed) Flycatcher casting some side-eye at Fraser's Hill #Malaysia 🪶

Double-banded Plover, one of those birds that does it's own thing. For many birds migration is north south, this shorebird does east to west; breeding in New Zealand and wintering in Australia. Auckland Islands 🪶

Either the bird or the rectangular holes are good enough to identify a Pileated Woodpecker. Amherst Island #Ontario #WoodpeckerWednesday 🪶
