In the law firm executive order cases, DOJ takes the position that an injunction barring implementation will only be enforceable against the govt agencies named in the complaint. So Perkins Coie just amended its complaint to name all the relevant fed agencies. The case caption is now 40 pages long.

This is like if Portland expanded its City Council and remodeled City Hall but didn't change the legislative processes causing the underlying dysfunction.

Archie, half-napping half-wants to know what you’re eating.

A brief update on the current budget forecasts in the Finance Committee today that was both fascinating and horrifying for what it couldn't say. The impacts of Trump's tariff malpractice in the world economy are likely imminent, potentially dire, but almost entirely unpredictable.

Without getting into the labor relations part, according to an employee survey, the city has no fewer than 107 staffers with at least 50% of their time spent on communnity engagement activities across all city agencies. Seems like a lot of room for consolidation and efficiency.

Tubbs Hill in CdA is one of the truly great places, and Scott and Mary Lou Reed are among the greatest people I've ever met. Really a nice tribute. via @kayethornbrugh.bsky.social

Robot walks into a bar Orders a drink, lays down a bill Bartender says, "Hey, we don't serve robots" And the robot says, "Oh, but someday you will"

Yeah, I was sorta waiting for someone to do this story. It seemed pretty clear that it was a bad hack when they scheduled a special Environmental Quality Commission meeting to deal with some of the effects. www.oregon.gov/deq/about-us...

A VERY long story — at least two whiskeys at the bar — but the craziest case in my law practice came out of this address.

Until relatively recently, I've thought the FedSoc effort to stack the courts was a ridiculously ineffecient way to move policy: The brightest conservative legal minds locked away deciding whether auto insurance policies stack if you're killed riding a lawn mower. Seems J. Harvie has come to terms.

Fiona is not particularly interested in hearing me explain my predictions for the county’s draft budget being released by the Chair tomorrow. #explainingthingstocats

As cases pile up against President Trump's executive actions, DOJ is increasingly raising the argument that courts can't block the administration's pronouncements because they don't really do anything. Latest example:

Letter of recommendation: We're in the middle of a "birthday week" in the household and we went to Fair Weather for brunch Friday. And omg.

Unless and until the Portland Diamond Project can actually name a multi-tenbillionaire or two and explain how the regional sports network is going to work, this is all just springtime daydreaming.

The student cases are all so weak - and the administration is in the process of losing all of them nationwide - it's almost like a due process defense shouldn't even be necessary. If you're an AUSA prosecuting them, it's time to resign.

I feel like @oregonianopinion.bsky.social is missing both the forest AND the trees here. This paragraph gives up the whole game: The PGE choice was to expressly avoid alternatives that might require money or regulation. Going through the *public park* was just pure expediency. 1/3

Remember: POTUS' power is cabined by law. Knowing these orders will flout the rule of law, remember this too if Trump moves forward: He will run into a unified wall of seasoned civic organizations, many of whom are *purpose-built* to fight the transgressive use of power. #Solidarity #PackStrength

Preparing for my twice-monthly visit to the Governance Committee of the Council Monday, I noted the new agenda item (not available for public comment) - a "Code of Conduct" for the Council. Unpopular Opinion: These things are almost always a Bad Idea and it will be a big waste of time. 🧵 1/

Some days in this job, you're at City Hall until 11:00pm debating policy, some days you get to use the firehose on a fire truck at the airport. Here's my weekly top ten:

Letter of Recommendation: I just realized that my very favorite insta follow is here now. Windowkitty on instagram is a daily necessity for cats, obvs, but so much more.

As an enviro who spent a lot of time in Annapolis in the Van Hollen tenure, I'll confirm this whole thread is absolutely true. (The early 90s House Environmental Matters Committee was legendary.) We drove from Baltimore to campaign in his run for Congress.
