I know, I know, I'm a day late, I'm sorry, but better late than never. Here's my Weekly Top Ten:

Speaking of knowing about immigration law, here's a story from the same block as my old law office. In a new "fact pattern," ICE comes in to audit employer paperwork, but ends up taking three employees out in zip ties. 1/2

This 🧵is a LOT

This is impressive journalism. Immigration law is complicated and full of trap doors for the unwary. Patchwork legal representation is better than no legal representation, but this piece describes the consequential pitfalls and why much more careful program and case management is necessary.

This sums up the reaction from the kitten room when I explained that I’ll be reading the county budget much of the day today. #explainingthingstokittens #explainingthingstocats

Chris Kluwe's comments in this interview are perfect. More of this from more people with the privilege to say things that need to be said.

Shutting down already-installed infrastructure in the name of government "efficiency" while also harming business competitors of a government official who just happens to have his own network of EV chargers.

I love my country stupid and cruel

To be even clearer: "could weaken our mutual aid" is the most devastating effect of these cuts. There is NO single entity equipped to deal with massive fires, so ALL the agencies need to maintain readiness. The federal backbone is essential, and without it rural communities are in deep trouble.

We all got work to do.

New City Council committee meeting agendas just dropped! www.portland.gov/auditor/coun...

REAL nerds ALWAYS watch the WHOLE meeting, but if you didn't, don't worry, I'm here NOW to recap the last 15 minutes or so of Portland City Council's four-hours-and-15-minutes-or-so meeting last night. 🧵 1/

Some interesting discussion tonight at the City Council meeting about how appointments to advisory bodies should be handled procedurally in the Council. Relatedly, GTAC recently approved a recommendation around advisory bodies that might be helpful. Available here: www.portland.gov/transition/d...

Letter of Recommendation: It's hard to say why exactly, but I enjoy this bsky robot posting flight paths of aircraft flying in circles around Los Angeles. You're welcome.

This, the conclusion to a super-important thread on the impacts on firefighting capabilities, could extend to the whole spectrum of mindless federal staffing cuts over the last couple of weeks.

100%

Check out this response thread from Marc and this perspective on tonight's Council agenda item. I still think, as a general rule going forward, that "reports" should be heard in committees, but this is a strong case for when and why there might be exceptions.

It's been really difficult to express how I've been feeling lately. This probably comes closest.

Federal agencies employed more than 17,000 wildland fire staffers last year, many in seasonal roles. Many of those workers just had job offers rescinded, or transfers and promotions put on hold, as they were set to begin training for the 2025 fire season. oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2025/02/19/t...

Idaho Republicans are only ever silent about things that matter. Alex's reporting of the devastation coming to Idaho forests: www.spokesman.com/stories/2025...

A really impressive analysis showing how success in school depends heavily on whether you can actually get there on time.
