If road deaths were a virus, we’d call it a pandemic. Safer transport helps us all – and we need it urgently. Deaths on the road costs countries up to 5% of GDP. Centring transport around people, not cars, can propel development. www.theguardian.com/global-devel... via @theguardian.com @who.int

Firing all the JAGs is very very bad

Andrew Bowen is an absolute treasure. San Diego is so fucking blessed to have a real Shoupista as a local metro reporter

⬇️⬇️Get up to speed on amendments etc of the #WAleg #parkingreform bill. The gist, of course, is--more homes! more affordable living! unblock housing in cities; encourage +make possible community needs--daycares, senior living, affordable housing, momNpops. Less mindless, expensive, empty pavement.

This section of the Parking Reform and Modernization Act's bill report is...absolutely perfect.

Dozens more pregnant and postpartum women have died in Texas hospitals since the state banned abortion, ProPublica’s analysis shows. As the maternal mortality rate dropped nationally, it rose in Texas by 33%.

The collapse of Congress as a constitutional institution is inseparable from its degradation as a representative body, in that for the vast majority of seats, members are chosen by only one party's congressional primary voters, which is often only a single-digit percentage of the electorate.

Here's one of the warnings I gave in an article before the US election. It's devastating to see it all happening. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

"It is one of the most robust parking reform packages to move forward in any state." So proud of @jessdbateman.bsky.social for bringing this important legislation forward! www.theurbanist.org/2025/02/20/w...

Parking mandates: bad for business, bad for the environment, and bad for our main streets Time to relegate these antiquated policies to the dustbin of history

The state Senate in #waleg has become the first legislative chamber in the country to vote to legalize best-in-class, international-standard residential elevators. #SB5156 now goes to the state House. It has until late April to take action.

4+ story zoning means: • more elevators • accessibility standards • less expensive home options in places good for people who don’t drive www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

This brilliant obituary from the @nytimes.com honors Donald Shoup’s legacy. With well-chosen quotes, it captures his unwavering quest to make parking policy engaging, relatable, and even fun. A fitting tribute to a true visionary. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/b...

💯➕

A tough amendment, but it's important to recognize how big of a win this bill is. Cities varying in size from Mukilteo and Mercer Island to Tacoma and Seattle would have significant guardrails placed on their ability to impose parking mandates. Onto the House!

Some great talking points here on #SB5184, which reduces costly parking mandates across the state. Please reach out to your Senators in #waleg today urging support!

Likely today ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Good time to get on the ☎️

RIP Donald Shoup, enemy of free street parking. His work helped eliminate mandatory parking requirements for most developments near mass transit in California. www.latimes.com/homeless-hou... via @liamjdillon.com

To my knowledge, here's the first study looking at how removing parking minimums impacts local stores (by an econ job market candidate from U Toronto). It finds that reducing parking requirements in Seattle led to more new firms, and increased existing firms' odds of staying open

Residents in some of Seattle's most expensive and amenity-rich neighborhoods, including Madison Park, Mount Baker, and Hawthorne Hills, have appealed the environmental review of Mayor Bruce Harell's plan to add more housing capacity. www.theurbanist.org/2025/02/14/r...

This is a huge deal. This bill might better be described as the Parking Sanity Act, because it stops the absurd situation, for example, that *bars* are *required* to provide off-street parking.

Parking reform rock star Donald Shoup, who died last week, literally wrote the book on the subject. In honor of his decades of groundbreaking work on parking in urban centers, we're republishing an oldie-but-goodie with ten takeaways we learned from Shoup’s career.

There are more than 60 great stories and memories of Professor Donald Shoup posted on our memorial page. Get inspired or share your own! I know for a fact that they're helping folks who are dealing with this loss.
