Attachment like gravity should ever weaken.

Think upon the action of a proposed law, not in a utopia or ideal but in difficult circumstances enforced by bad actors with malicious intent.

After making judicial oversight by the High Court a principal ornament of her Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill to encourage MPs to vote for it at Second Reading, Kim Leadbeater MP now proposes to abandon that provision www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I just learned a flock of penguins is called a “waddle” and for a moment, all feels right with the world

Is this the worst thing to happen to barristers since they let us speak to the public about our own cases

A few claim form issues here. Is a claim form properly served when a (slightly) incorrect address is given? Was the claimant able to serve on this as the defendant's "last known residence"? www.civillitigationbrief.com/2025/02/03/4...

This is what Dr Henry Marsh, a leading proponent of assisted suicide, is saying in the open. Ask yourself: do you want to live in a society that makes such a tradeoff?

Well, well, well, it seems that even Lord Hermer's ministerial colleagues agree with our "thoroughly bad Policy Exchange paper"!

Constitutions, including written ones, are ultimately only as strong as the institutions responsible for upholding them. If leaders & governments are determined to defy the law & the constitution, who will stop them? The legislature? Not if weak or craven.

At the first committee hearing of the Assisted Dying Bill today my name was put forward as a witness in an amendment which was rejected - see transcript of Jake Ben Richards MP. I will submit written evidence to the committee. It should not have been given the impression that I am in my early career

The Leadbeater assisted suicide committee has just voted 14 to 8 against hearing evidence from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Both ministers on the committee voted against. This is shameful. The entire scrutiny process has been discredited before it even began.

A foreseeable and indeed foreseen development in the course of the public bill committee hearings of the Assisted Dying Bill www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

I’m ever more conscious of a culture divide in the assisted dying debate between people without disabilities, used to exercising choice and direction over their lives, with close and trusting bonds to those around them, and no financial anxieties, and people much less fortunate

📢 NEW: How was the #AssistedDying Bill drafted? We have an exclusive conversation with Dame Elizabeth Gardiner, the ex-head of the Office of Parliamentary Counsel, who drafted the Bill for @kimleadbeater that MPs are now examining. 👇Links to the episode in the 🧵 below.

I spoke about the judicial oversight provisions in the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill (the Assisted Dying Bill) with Max Hill KC and Nick Robinson on BBC Radio 4 Today this morning (starts at 2 hrs 36 mins in) www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Very pleased to release this new long paper on where EU defence is heading. A thread with my key points: www.cer.org.uk/publications...

Yesterday, we witnessed shameful scenes in the committee for Kim Leadbeater's assisted suicide bill. She and her core supporters have given up on even the semblance of fairness. It was a pure assertion of brute, ugly power. My write-up for the Spectator. www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-...

“The assisted suicide bill’s shameful lack of scrutiny” - a piece by @yuanyiz.bsky.social on the progress of this important proposed law, which if passed will require the input of family division judges www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-...

One of the saddest parts of this job is reading the statements of police officers who have evidently experienced the most shocking and horrific job of their lives, and then seeing them give their evidence live, reliving it step by traumatising step. I always feel so much sympathy for them.

The crisis in our courts has opened the door to secretive justice It must be stopped My long-read this weekend for @thelondonstandard.bsky.social www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/cour...

Last shout out for this webinar on costs for housing lawyers tomorrow www.civillitigationbrief.com/2025/01/02/m...

I'm enjoying the novelty of being officially “rebutted” by the Foreign Office, but it remains the case that the Chagos surrender deal is indefensible strategically, diplomatically, legally, morally, and financially, as our new Policy Exchange report argues. policyexchange.org.uk/publication/...

Challenge accepted! 🎤I am the very model of a modern crashed economy I've underperformed vegetables like lettuces and broccoli I know the cheese of England, and I want a Keir apology From pork markets to pensions too, my life is tragicomedy

The Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii is erupting again.
