Cancelling @joyannreid.bsky.social means the door she held open for the next generation of Black voices will slam shut. Without her, the next her, won't get platformed by white media. That, of course, is why white media pushed her out. My latest in @thenation.com www.thenation.com/article/soci...

NEW: Indiana already has stringent voter ID rules... & the GOP is advancing a bill right now to strip university IDs from the list of options you can use. This would make it much harder for students to vote. At polling site at IU Bloomington, 2/3rds of voters in November used their student IDs.

No one had died of measles in America for ten years, until yesterday. That 2015 death in WA was preceded by a 12y period of no US deaths. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt... HHS Secretary RFK Jr. says it’s “not unusual.” apnews.com/article/meas... It is unusual. www.cdc.gov/measles/data...

Rep. Suozzi: 26% of the federal workforce are veterans—26%. What about their service to this country? We encouraged them to apply for these jobs, and now we’re just taking away their livelihoods? It’s not just chaotic, it’s not just cruel—it’s unconstitutional.

💥 BREAKING: At John Deere's annual shareholders meeting today, shareholders overwhelmingly rejected an anti-DEI proposal brought by the same group that targeted Costco and Apple. An anti-DEI proposal from the NCPPR received less than 1 percent of votes. Deere shareholders: DEI is in. Bigots are out

Murphy: "The destruction of our democracy is part of this story ... this is super unpopular, what they are doing. Nobody wants their healthcare to disappear ... so how do you get away with it? You try to destroy our democracy. You try to crush dissent. You threaten members of Congress with arrest."

AOC: The order has come down to this committee. Find $880 billion to pay for a tax cuts on yachts, jets, billionaires, and mega corporations while working class people pay higher tax rates than Facebook does. Undocumented immigrants pay more in taxes than many large corporations

We dare Mike Johnson to give that answer at a town hall in front of his constituents

New: DOGE's spending has been secret. No longer. My colleagues have uncovered it. www.propublica.org/article/doge...

been shitting on Blanchard for this but let's be honest the desk team that let all this through to print should genuinely not be employed in any capacity editorial OR whoever ordered that they weren't allowed to do their job should not be. There isn't a third option here

a good example of how the world is getting dumber. the new politico playbook writer didn't know who FDR was until a reader told him about that whole "new deal" thing. this newsletter is read by every important person in DC.

Jim Acosta: I think the AP should consider whether or not to sue the administration… and the rest of the press corps should start seriously considering whether it’s worth sending everyone into the Oval Office, onto Air Force One, or into the briefing room.

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

This is so incredibly, goofily stupid—a slapstick level of dumbass, self-defeating, wasteful procurement even if it’s somehow not as corrupt as it looks—but I suspect absolutely no one is going to prevent it from happening. What an embarrassment. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/u...

BREAKING On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that the NIH had frozen virtually all grant funding in violation of 2 federal court orders On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.

There is no content on that website—nothing. White House reporters just get herded from room to room and lied to in each one.

Wokest Superbowl ever. Gaga, NOLA culture, Trombone Shorty, Terrance Blanchard, … two Black quarterbacks and Kendrick Lamar, plus my line sister @ledisi.bsky.social singing the Black National Anthem. This is actually amazing and I love it ❤️

Purging dissent in the security services and giving loyalists power is something we *instantly* recognize in other contexts.

They’re absolutely going for it. Doesn’t mean they’re going to be successful, and in fact I think it’s like shooting the moon, but everyone needs to understand what they are attempting.

“Hugenberg practiced what he called Katastrophenpolitk, ‘the politics of catastrophe,’ …he sought to polarize public opinion and the political parties with incendiary news stories, some of them entirely fabricated articles intended to cause confusion and outrage.” www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

It was always apparent but now it's increasingly undeniable that all these 20-something DOGE employees were chosen not *in spite* of inadequate vetting but *because* they would not pass vetting. Trump & Musk chose the people who seemed the most willing to commit illegal acts on their behalf.

These overhead rates are negotiated. Lowering it unilaterally to 15% is another way to destroy science in the US. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

NEW: An internal email obtained by WIRED from a threat intelligence team monitoring US Treasury systems advised labeling DOGE operatives an "insider threat," adding that it recommended suspending their access "immediately." | www.wired.com/story/treasu...

Kara Swisher, born December 1962, doesn’t know—or more likely chooses not to engage seriously with—what happened in South Africa that might have influenced Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and David Sacks to be the way they are. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/o...

The executive director of Fair Wisconsin, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, tells me she's heard from multiple families whose children's gender-affirming care was reinstated after my reporting.

They may surprise me but I don't know how Dems provide a single vote for GOP spending bills in this Congress. Nothing they negotiate for would be safe. And the swing seat members are voting for the GOP message bills anyway, votes on approps won't matter.

There has been reporting on this by big outlets with international reporting teams. There are far more reporters covering domestic politics; arguing against my own interest here but if you want to ignore that coverage and read foreign coverage you can find it. www.cnn.com/2025/02/06/p...

My latest: Musk’s South African White Male Fragility Why does Elon want USAID to ‘die?’ Probably because it helped end Apartheid. www.thealtmedia.com/p/musks-sout...

It's mostly obvious. But it's worth saying explicitly and this is an example. Under the heading of "DEI" they're not simply banning some new things from the last decade but also what is simply civil rights enforcement and even (as here) the mere recognition & expression of racial & ethnic identity.

Musk's unelected, extremist online teenagers are messing with everyone's grandma's check.

"Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) on Wednesday rolled out the Eliminate Looting of Our Nation by Mitigating Unethical State Kleptocracy (ELON MUSK) Act, which would ban 'special' government employees like Musk from having federal contracts."

I wonder why Musk is focused on the federal civilian workforce (4% of the budget) and not federal contractors, which account for 3x more annual spending and are more prone to waste, fraud, and abuse?

Top Dem on the House Intel Committee Jim Himes says in a statement that he understands that the White House “insisted” on the CIA transmitting the list in an unclassified email

Maddow: I think it's pretty obvious now that they are using DEI as just a pretext. They're giving everything that, you know, unfashionable boogeyman label to try to avoid people in general, realizing that what they're really doing is just wrecking the US government

thread with @aoc.bsky.social’s advice for this moment, and it involves calling your reps. not sure how? use 5calls.org (they have an app too).

My staff is hearing reports from Head Start programs in Oregon that they're still locked out of federal funds. My office is doing everything it can to get more info and get funds flowing before providers have to start closing their doors.

Venture firm Andreessen Horowitz has hired Daniel Penny, the man who killed Jordan Neely on an NYC subway. He was studying architecture before the killing.

Jeffries: They've done nothing as it relates to lowering the high cost of living. At the same they are raiding the government and attempting to steal taxpayer money. That's what the situation at the treasury department is all about

@cnn.com :”The masked man went into the bank, pointed a gun at people and took all the money, raising questions about whether masked men can wield this kind of authority.”

new reporting that Elon is instructing GSA, the agency that manages government worksites, to terminate the leases for all (!) federal offices nationwide: apnews.com/article/trum...

Rep. Pressley: Elon Musk is a Nazi nepo baby

I support this. Elon Musk cannot dismantle USAID without an act of Congress. Democrats must use every lever at our disposal to block his illegal takeover and shutdown of an essential government agency.

Hear me out — If parents call colleges freaked about their FAFSA data being leaked, schools may have to issue statements — which would reach a whole lot more families about how warped this is. Organizing isn’t always calling electeds. Sometimes it’s just calling people with a bigger megaphone.

None of the big papers, for all their resources, has been covering the (incredibly stupid and vile) chaos that Musk and his strike-force of libertarian Beavises nearly as well as Wired. It's an extremely cheap subscription (and a very good print product as well) and I recommend it.
