On 6/12, DHS Sec’y Kristi Noem said “We are staying here to liberate [LA] from the socialists and the burdensome leadership this governor and mayor have placed on this country and this city.” This use of military force to displace a democratically elected is the very definition of a coup.

No f*cking kidding! I live in the occupied city of Los Angeles, and we can confirm this to be true. 🚨 ICE detentions of non-criminals rise 800% under Trump

If everyone knew their history

We hear that immigrants are "freeloaders," yet they're being arrested at their workplaces. We hear that immigrants "just need to follow the law," but when they attempt to, they're rounded up at courthouses. Hello?

This hits hard! An L.A. protest in the 1930s, pushing back against illegal immigration raids. During the Great Depression, thousands of Mexican immigrants and their U.S.-born kids were deported. Racism and economic fear drove it then, just like now.

Kristi Noem, Dr. Phil, and ICE went to this woman’s home in Huntington Park, CA at 6am to make a spectacle and you want me to be satisfied with @governor.ca.gov flowery words? Watch. It’s disgusting. Noem belongs in prison.

The average citizen is bound by the law but not protected by it while the richest are protected by the law by not bound by it.

Ran to Target for laundry detergent, saw about a dozen women in their 60s or thereabouts buying poster board and markers. I would have assumed they were teachers getting supplies until I remembered school's out and then it clicked.

He hasn’t posted here in a while but this is @filmthepolicela.bsky.social helping out LAPD with some riot control tonight. Pretty funny.

As we brace for Trump's escalation of conflict in LA and his vain $45m military parade, sharing convo I had with @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social this week. We covered a lot of ground. But this stood out: Empathy and solidarity are the antidotes to authoritarianism. www.whitetoolong.net/p/empathy-an...

“Authoritarian” is getting to be pretty weak tea as a description of the GOP.

During this tumultuous year, I'll be writing weekly, with research and analysis about religion, white Christian nationalism, and protecting our pluralistic democracy. Inviting everyone to check out my free Substack newsletter. And if you're a subscriber, give me a shout out! www.whitetoolong.net

BREAKING @prri.org poll. My disturbing take: It’s virtually impossible to write a survey question about the treatment of immigrants that is too brutal for Republicans to support. 1) 8 in 10 Republicans support renditions of immigrants to foreign prisons without due process. prri.org/spotlight/ne...

Let’s talk about yesterday. During a Department of Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles led by Secretary Kristi Noem, Senator Alex Padilla (D‑CA) was forcibly removed, forced face-down on the ground, and handcuffed by federal agents. Here’s what to know:

As I noted in today’s post, this really was the most egregious thing that happened in LA yesterday and that’s saying an awful lot

Things could get very ugly very quickly. And folks like Senator Cassidy, who allowed this to happen, have a unique responsibility to try and stop it—if that’s even possible at this juncture.

Picking radishes is no easy task. Efrén spends 8-10 hrs/day on his knees, picking and sorting the radishes into small bunches to fill dozens of crates a day in CA's Ventura County. He's proud to have worked in America's fields for 49 years. #WeFeedYou

Deirdre Schifeling, the ACLU’s chief political and advocacy officer, joined Democracy Docket's Jacob Knutson to discuss the protests, President Trump's deployment of military personnel in California, the state of democracy and more. www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6u2...

@governorwalz.mn.gov: "The road to authoritarianism is littered with people telling you you're overreacting."

The neighborhood is getting ready for tomorrow

San Antonio marchers join similar events in Houston, Austin, Dallas and in cities across the nation.

These are the people that make America great 🇲🇽🇺🇸

If you're heading to a protest tomorrow, it's important to know your rights. Consult this information from the ACLU. Be peaceful. Be safe. Be careful. Be strong.

US Nafo Fellas, heading to a protest near you? I put a jpg of the sign in the comment below so you can print your own. Get up Stand up

They wanted max cruelty. Shock and awe for the cameras. But all they did was traumatize a bunch of poor kids who’ll never forget it. An L.A. mom, US citizen, watched as unmarked vehicles rolled up. Masked, heavily armed ICE agents, guns drawn. And Cosplay Kristi Noem right there playing warlord!

2,169 events across 20 countries. Millions of peope are standing up tomorrow to say with one voice: No Kings!

Maybe he had a tattoo....

I know there's a lot going on, but the Secretary of Homeland Security declaring that federal troops are in California and Los Angeles to "liberate" the state and city from its duly-elected leaders really is a fourteen-alarm fire.

<thread> On the left: June 12, Judge Breyer writing that THE test for whether the US Marines/Guard violate Posse Comitatus will be whether they've engaged in "detaining" civilians. On the right: June 13: See for yourself. Note: The DoD has confirmed the detention of civilian to Reuters.

Levin: I have to give a shoutout to MeidasTouch, because on April 5th, a lot of the corporate media, a lot of the legacy media, was not closely covering the single largest peaceful day of protest in years—but MeidasTouch was.

A woman is hospitalized and receives staples in her head after LAPD trampled her with their horses. LAPD also impeded her receiving medical attention.

“Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.” ~Thurgood Marshall On this day in 1967, Thurgood Marshall was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court. Stay safe tomorrow, friends. 🫶

This is the page in the history book where future generations may ask, “Why didn’t more people speak up?" Don’t let this slide.

Sorry, cancer patients, but we just don't have the money. We had to prioritize spending tens of millions on a military parade so the president could compensate for his many personal inadequacies. I'm sure you understand.

Using the military "to execute the laws" is illegal? Who knew?

HISTORIC ESCALATION: U.S. MARINES DETAIN AMERICAN CITIZEN IN LOS ANGELES 🇺🇸 For the first time in modern U.S. history, active-duty Marines have reportedly detained a U.S. citizen on domestic soil; without the invocation of the Insurrection Act. Let that sink in.

If you’re undocumented, don’t march tomorrow. Stay home. Let the rest of us get this one. Solidarity ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼
