Mixed messages coming from @oxfordnanopore.bsky.social about the fate of the Flongle - the low throughput sequencing flowcell with a silly name but of great value to the microbial genomics community. Is it being 'hidden' or discontinued? Huge shame if the latter, as it provides options for pathogens

Really pleased to share our new method developed @sangerinstitute.bsky.social in collaboration with colleagues at NICD (South Africa) and BRTI (Zimbabwe) which offers a potential solution for genomic surveillance in low-resource settings. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

As part of an ongoing collaboration on syphilis between @sangerinstitute.bsky.social and research groups in 4 African countries, last summer we conducted training and fieldwork at BRTI (brti.co.zw) in Zimbabwe sangerinstitute.blog/2025/02/17/s...

With love in the air, there is no better time to talk about STIs ;-). I am incredibly proud to present back-to-back papers from my lab, published today in Microbial Genomics.

How do changes in antibiotic use, various pathways to resistance, multiple drug resistance, and more come together to shape the success and failure of bacterial lineages in a real-world epidemic? #AMR #microsky A preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... (1/15)

@charlesgaba.com is a hero and downloaded CDC’s entire website. A small group of us has come together to preserve this critical resource and make it accessible to the scientific community. More to come. These data are public and they are ours. Deletion disobedience is one way to fight back.

Trump has axed virtually all global health programs & some sensitive clinical trials have simply been stopped. Ironically, this will simply drive LMICs to #China & #Russia. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/h...

Huge thanks to my sister for helping put these together.

This is a disaster. I have worked with icddr,b and their staff is excellent and incredibly successful in saving and improving lives in Bangladesh and across the region.

Lots of discussion about the extent to which DeepSeek results are 'censored'. Found this piece useful – someone tried it out: 1) locally; 2) on official cloud host; 3) on third-part cloud. And concluded that censorship is more about cloud layer than model: interconnect.substack.com/p/was-zuck-r...
